Labour to back volunteer firefighters and lower power bills for businesses

Two Labour Member’s Bills have been drawn from the ballot today, taking important steps to make buildings more energy efficient and ensure volunteer firefighters get the ACC cover they deserve.

Rachel Brooking’s Building (Energy Efficient Office Buildings) Amendment Bill would require office buildings to meet energy performance standards, helping cut emissions and reduce power bills for businesses.

“Energy efficiency should be a core responsibility for commercial buildings. My Bill will drive better energy efficiency decisions, reduce emissions and help lower power bills for businesses,” Rachel Brooking said.

“It will also help ensure New Zealand’s commercial buildings are prepared for the long-term challenges of climate change.”

Kieran McAnulty’s Accident Compensation (Extended Cover for FENZ Personnel) Amendment Bill, would extend ACC cover to volunteer firefighters who are currently not covered for work-related illness or injuries.

“Firefighters put themselves on the line to protect New Zealanders. They deserve an ACC system that recognises the risks they take and supports them if they’re injured or become ill as a result of their service,” Kieran McAnulty said.

“Career and volunteer firefighters face traumatic incidents and dangerous working conditions. They don’t stop to ask whether they’re protected before running into a burning building and Parliament shouldn’t hesitate to ensure they’re properly covered afterwards.”
