Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown tells magazine ‘your paper will die’ after critical op-ed
The editor of Ponsonby News says they will no longer run columns by Wayne Brown after the Auckland mayor sent what they described as a “threatening” email to the magazine.
Brown’s email focused on an opinion piece by Waitematā and Gulf Ward councillor Mike Lee, in which Lee criticised the mayor over Auckland Council’s rates increase.
In the email, sent on July 3, Brown said, “if you are just going to publish Mike Lee bagging me then your paper will die”.
Ponsonby News editor Martin Leach told Stuff on Tuesday he was disappointed by the mayor’s email.

For everyone outside of Auckland, Ponsonby News is one of those old voices and old heartbeats of NZ. They are a well read local with a strong legacy of engaging respectfully in civic issue.
You usually come across them in the cafes and are a strong local voice for good.
It’s very focused on the small businesses of Auckland and are certainly not anyone you would threaten or try to push around because it would be like bullying a well respected pensioner.
Why Wayne has threatened to kill them bewilders me.
I don’t like our Boomer King Mayor, I think he’s a grumpy, self entitled propertied boomer arsehole BUT TO BE FAIR TO WAYNE, 60% of Auckland are grumpy, self entitled propertied boomer arseholes so he is very much the mayor that Auckland deserves.
Threatening to kill newspapers that criticise him is very on brand for self entitled propertied boomer arseholes but Wayne gets he is only a Mayor and not a Mafia Boss right?
