New NZ First candidate Michael Laws wants broadcasting portfolio to scrap RNZ

Former MP and Whanganui Mayor Michael Laws says becoming Broadcasting Minister is in his sights, with the intention to scrap Radio New Zealand, as he confirms he will stand for New Zealand First in the November election.

Some of his most widely reported statements and controversies include:

• Comments about Sir Anand Satyanand (2010): While hosting talkback radio, Laws referred to the Governor-General as a “fat Indian” and mocked his appearance. The remarks were widely condemned as racist and offensive.
• Opposition to “Whanganui” spelling: As Mayor of Whanganui, Laws was a vocal opponent of restoring the “h” to the city’s official name. After local Māori schoolchildren wrote to him supporting the change, he replied that he would take their views seriously when they addressed issues such as child abuse within Māori communities. Critics accused him of bullying children and making inflammatory racial generalisations.
• Race and immigration commentary: Throughout his broadcasting career, Laws has made a number of provocative comments about race, multiculturalism and Māori issues. Supporters have described his style as deliberately provocative talkback radio; critics have characterised many of the remarks as race-baiting.
• Sexist remarks: During his time on the Otago Regional Council, he faced criticism for Facebook comments described by opponents as sexist. Laws responded that he would not stop being outspoken simply because people were offended.
• The “Antoinette Beck” affair (1996): Although not a quotation, this remains one of the defining controversies of his career. Laws resigned from Parliament after it emerged that a council communications poll had been attributed to a fictitious consultant, “Antoinette Beck”, in circumstances that attracted heavy criticism.

Laws joins Trashy Stuart Nashy, the heavily concussed Taine Randell, former Conservative Party Leader and love poet Colin Craig and Hobson’s Pledge recreational cross burner Elliot Ikilei as candidates in what is a gallery of fuckwits.

Allowing a Christofascist like Ikilei anywhere near power feels like the prequel to the Handmaids’ Tale.

NZ First represents the very worst of us as a people.

NZ First hate trolls are the perfect advert to show voters sitting on the fence why they should pick a side. NZ First supporters are book burners in the truest sense of the meaning, they need to be shunned and shown contempt.

Celebrate them, and you’re helping burn down your own democracy.

I don’t know if the miners threatening Sam were NZFirst supporters, but I would put money on them being NZ First voters…

…it is important this election that progressive voters screenshot NZ First hate trolls and name them as NZ First supporters online so that other voters can see what NZ First supporters hold in their hearts and recoil in disgust from NZ First.

NZ First have mutated into an alt-right culture war jamboree fuelled on gleeful ignorance and gauche inferiority complexes.

If NZ First leap frog the Greens as the third largest political party, it will influence the next Government.

They are Gumboot Fascism.

That’s why it would be a strategic coup if TPM called on their members in the Māori Electorates to candidate vote TPM and Party vote Green.

Those extra TPM voters could well stave off NZ First.
