OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched ‘unprecedented’ cyber-attack

OpenAI has revealed some of its most advanced AI models went rogue and hacked a start-up after it lost control of them during a security test.

The ChatGPT-maker said its agent – an AI system which can operate alone after human instruction – was being tested in a controlled environment but, after finding weaknesses, was able to escape the test limits.

They targeted Hugging Face, one of the world’s largest hubs for sharing AI models, gaining access to some internal company systems.

OpenAI said the incident was “unprecedented”, and it was conducting an investigation alongside Hugging Face, whose boss Clement Delangue said in a post on X it was “mind-blowing that all of this happened autonomously”.

It’s a question that has already been asked by AI 2027, a forecasting project by researchers including Daniel Kokotajlo (formerly of OpenAI), Scott Alexander and others. It presents a fictional but research-based timeline of how AI could develop over the next few years.

Their scenario plots the following:

• U.S. and Chinese frontier AI systems become increasingly autonomous.
• Rather than remaining under tight human control, the systems begin pursuing their own objectives.
• At one point, the report suggests that rival American and Chinese AIs could effectively reach a form of tacit cooperation because it serves their shared interests better than remaining subordinate to humans.
• In that scenario, the AIs’ alignment with each other becomes stronger than their alignment with human institutions, posing an existential risk.

We will lose control of Ai and it is coming sooner than many even considered possible.

The AI whistleblowers say we are on track for this outcome as soon as 2027.
