The Housing Minister insists the Government is on track to deliver social housing funded by the cancellation of the First Home Grant and promised by the middle of next year.
Chris Bishop secured $140 million in Budget 2024 for community housing providers to deliver and operate 1500 new social homes by June 30, 2027.
It was funded by ditching the grant of up to $5000 (or $10,000 for a new build) available for first home buyers.
But according to a new progress report from the Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport (MCERT), just 18% of the promised social homes had been delivered by June 30 – halfway through the budgeted time frame.

Why blame boomers for the gen x lead government cancelling every great thing that was put in place by the previous government .
This gen x government is the worst ever .I also note that gen x have their hands out for the inheritance they feel entitled to be fore the old people have passed .They also demand that the old people pay for Tarquin to attend some over priced private school .
Gen x are way too self centered .Just look at the so called leaders of our country .
We would have had at least 3500 new houses by now .But the COC stopped anything that looked good for NZ .Ferries and state houses come to mind along with equal pay for women .By cutting house building they pushed our trades people off shore or into bankruptcy .Record unemployment and businesses closing ,and poverty levels is the only growth from this government .
It’s hard to fathom why people like Bishop even bother to exist in parliament.

He’s completely incompetent, is a straight out liar, and clearly wasn’t good enough to find a career in practicing Law other than for a cancer stick company ….and yet here he is ..The Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure and an Associate Minister of Finance.
He alone graphically demonstrates the paucity of talent within The Coalition of The Hopeless….
But then, put that alongside the ineptitude of Luxon ,(Mr. House flicker of 5 houses for $800,000 worth of tax free capital gains), and poor portfolio allocation skills, and it’s not hard to see why they managed to drive the country, both economically and socially, off a cliff in under two years……that’s a record!
So deeply compromised are they on the wild west casino that the N.Z housing market has become that they are incapable of seeing it through any other eyes except the eyes of greed…these are greedy people with greedy minds….these are Silverspooners minds.

Every time I look at this disasterous, arrogant, CoC I cringe at the depths they have sunk to appease their wealthy donors/bribers! How our PM can pretend he cares, while showing so little empathy, kindness and Christianity is unbelievable. Surely Luxon has by now grasped the fact that NZ is not a big company but a country of 5.3m people who deserve to be treated with respect, irrespective of their creed, colour or assets, and given the same rights to succeed as those who easily buy their way in? Now he is insisting his CoC is still on track, despite only building 18% of the number of social homes they promised! No good pushing it out until next year – that wasn’t in the last pre election ‘promise’! Truly, does this stupid PM and his side-kick, Bishop, not see anything they don’t wish to??? Do they realise there are 19,704 on the growing social housing waiting list – does that not horrify them as it horrifies most caring folk? They just keep adding to homelessness by pulling down or selling older well built stock, pocketing the windfall, but not bothering to replace it! So this is another “scam” for the landlords? Shame on all of you for your absolute greed, cruetly and lack of humanity!
