Just 270 of 1500 social homes built to date after First Home Grant axed to fund them
The Housing Minister insists the Government is on track to deliver social housing funded by the cancellation of the First Home Grant and promised by the middle of next year.
Chris Bishop secured $140 million in Budget 2024 for community housing providers to deliver and operate 1500 new social homes by June 30, 2027.
It was funded by ditching the grant of up to $5000 (or $10,000 for a new build) available for first home buyers.
But according to a new progress report from the Ministry for Cities, Environment, Regions and Transport (MCERT), just 18% of the promised social homes had been delivered by June 30 – halfway through the budgeted time frame.

Every time I look at this disasterous, arrogant, CoC I cringe at the depths they have sunk to appease their wealthy donors/bribers! How our PM can pretend he cares, while showing so little empathy, kindness and Christianity is unbelievable. Surely Luxon has by now grasped the fact that NZ is not a big company but a country of 5.3m people who deserve to be treated with respect, irrespective of their creed, colour or assets, and given the same rights to succeed as those who easily buy their way in? Now he is insisting his CoC is still on track, despite only building 18% of the number of social homes they promised! No good pushing it out until next year – that wasn’t in the last pre election ‘promise’! Truly, does this stupid PM and his side-kick, Bishop, not see anything they don’t wish to??? Do they realise there are 19,704 on the growing social housing waiting list – does that not horrify them as it horrifies most caring folk? They just keep adding to homelessness by pulling down or selling older well built stock, pocketing the windfall, but not bothering to replace it! So this is another “scam” for the landlords? Shame on all of you for your absolute greed, cruetly and lack of humanity!
