Our unwed Millennial working Mum with the stay at home Dad has given birth to a girl!
That’s a Feminist trifecta!
Blessings to them and their whanau.
Welcome little one.
We should pause and give them the space they need while celebrating this for the symbolism of progressive modern culture it is, because it is a celebration of progressive modern culture.
It is the birth of a child to a generational shift of cultural values in our political leadership.
It deserves to be celebrated.
But that generational shift of cultural values also asks us to consider the feelings of those today who can’t have kids and who want them, or those who have lost an infant. The celebration can be jagged for those people today so kindness to them and their pain.
That generational shift of values also asks us to acknowledge that Jacinda’s ability to have the highest career in the land while having a baby isn’t one that can be or should be expected from every other woman. It’s the agency to do so that is the fruit of a liberal democracy, not the demand or expectation to do so that is worthy of celebration.
Sadly it means we also have to give gender-binary activists forgiving smiles when they attack anyone associating pink to the baby as a hate crime and suggest firmly to those who mum shame anything Jacinda does that it’s not really anyones business other than Jacinda and Clarke’s.
And finally, welcome to the Stay At Home Dad Club Clarke. You get to witness all those firsts that so many other fathers are denied, it is a beautiful privilege. Relish it.

The only people who will be unhappy in the wake of Jacinda & Clarke’s birth announcement will be Matthew Hooton as it detracts from his latest crusade attempt to paint David Parker as corrupt and Mike Hosking because it detracts from Mike Hosking.
