Government to overturn court decision recognising family carers as employees
The Disability Minister has revealed a bill that would reverse a recent Supreme Court decision to recognise some family carers as employees.
In a statement released late on Monday, Louise Upston announced the introduction of a law that would give Disability Support Services (DSS) a legal basis.
DSS sits within the Ministry for Social Development and is responsible for funding the care of about 55,000β―disabled people each year.

…after winning their legal case, the Government will simply ram through law desecrating these family carers.
Caring for disabled family members is already a full-time job

I think that when it comes to the disabled in our society, there but for the grace of God go I.
I find it hard enough to get around the world as an able bodied person, I simply could not imagine life with a disability and I believe a decent society does everything in its power to look after the disabled and give them agency.
The disabled have received a terrible time of it under this Government.
National have rolled back anything they can cut to the point of pushing through new laws exempting them from treating family care members as workers.
Look, caring for a seriously disabled family member is a full time job and is emotionally heavy.
This is about political priorities, not scarce money
DON’T TELL ME WE DON’T HAVE THE MONEY!
We have $14 billion for tax cuts, $3 billion for landlord tax loop holes, $300 million for tobacco subsidies and $200 million for gas and oil subsidies so I won’t tolerate right wing goons crying that we don’t have the money to be decent to the disabled.
This is a choice of cruelty.
If you are poor, unemployed, old (but not wealthy or sorted), a student, minimum wage worker (more so if you’re female), or disabled… you may as well not exist to these people. They don’t care. You’re not their target audience. For Luxon and friends, there are two kinds of people — the Nick Mowbray’s of the world, and grubby serfs who should be grateful for the scraps they’re tossed.
Remember these moments. Remember the cruelty. The smirking. The veiled insults. The casual dismissal and denial of trivial things that make a massive positive difference to those already struggling. AND THEN FUCKING VOTE ACCORDINGLY!

Are the disability cuts a practice run for the coming public service cuts? It seems that Willis is unwilling to employ anyone who would have reasons to be critical of her actions so cuts them loose instead.
This CoC is becoming more ridiculous and dictatorial by the day! When they are defying a court order they are in deep trouble. How anyone cannot see this and even consider voting for them is extremely farcical. Stop it now before you implode and do damage to our country that cannot be fixed! Upston is the worst of the worst. You would think with her history she’d have empathy. Turning over a supreme court ruling is narcissistic and a simple reminder of dictatorship style politics. Time for this corrupt government to go. God help Upstons should one of her children suffer a life long injury that requires her to be a full time carer but then she’s wealthy and sorted, right?
