Film Director NZ Tour Reignites Support For Palestine

4

Screen Shot 2016-03-16 at 10.13.34 am

Emmy Award winning and Oscar nominated Palestinian filmmaker Emad Burnat received a standing ovation after the screening of his powerful movie in Christchurch.

Burnat said people were used to hearing about Palestine in the news or from the politicians but he thought it was important for people to also hear directly from Palestinians who lived there.

Organiser and Kia Ora Gaza chairman Roger Fowler said the screening was part of a nationwide tour and there had been an unprecedented turnout at every event where Burnat screened his documentary.

The documentary begins with the birth of Burnat’s fourthth son Gibreel in 2005.

Gibreel’s arrival coincided with the start of the construction of a barrier by Israel, separating Burnat’s village of Bil’in from almost 60 percent of its farmland.

As well as capturing his son’s first few steps, Burnat decided to turn his first camera towards documenting the extraordinary events unfolding in his community.

In an interview recorded in the US, Burnat said, “for me, my camera was my gun, my weapon, my protection”.

During the course of filming, Israeli bullets and tear gas grenades broke five of Burnat’s cameras. One camera still has a bullet lodged inside it.

“That camera saved my life,” Burnat told the audience.

“5 Broken Cameras” is a documentation of resistance, lost childhoods and lives cut short by violence.

The film draws the audience to Gibreel’s gaze and what he sees and absorbs as he grows up through seven years of filming- unending protests, tear gas and stun grenades, arrests of family members and villagers, house raids at night, shootings and death of a much-loved friend.

Burnat’s village of Bil’in has become internationally known for its continuing weekly Friday protests against the annexation wall and illegal Israeli settlements continuing to this day.

Protests in Bil’in are often joined by activists from Israel and around the world.

“5 Broken Cameras” was first screened in New Zealand as part of the International Film Festival in 2012, the same year it was awarded the Doco Director Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Emad Burnat is the only Palestinian Academy Member with voting rights on Oscar-nominated Best Foreign Language Films.

“5 Broken Cameras” was edited by Israeli activist Guy Davidi.

This weeks Waatea news column –  TVNZ play the race game – again

In 2007, Rick Ellis, the then CEO of TVNZ, claimed the public broadcaster was living up to their charter obligations in terms of Maori on screen by holding up Police 10-7 as evidence Maori were getting lots of exposure.

In 2016 it looks like TVNZ haven’t progressed much.

John Key is a principled man – except when a photo op arises (A Photo Essay)

“Key has led the charge for changing the New Zealand flag but clearly he’s open to being spotted in the current one, having been involved in some banter with former Australia cricket captain Ricky Ponting at the New Zealand Open golf tournament in Arrowtown on Sunday.”

The journalist – Peter Thornton – who wrote that piece has missed the point entirely: it was a photo-op.  Our esteemed Dear Leader would run naked through Hades if there was a photo-op involved.

Whether it be babies, kittens, or puppies…

In the past, Key has worn several lapel-badges pinned to his jacket;

His most recent addition being the Kyle Lockwood flag-alternative;

.

Key with alt flag lapel badge

It appears that at no time has Key ever worn the current New Zealand flag on his lapel. One can only assume he is ashamed to wear it.

Which became confusing when he stood with current Aussie PM, Malcolm Turnbull, for another photo-op;

.

lapel badge - key - turnbull

.

It seems wholly inappropriate that Key stood in front of a large version of the current New Zealand flag – whilst wearing something on his lapel that carried no real meaning, and had not yet been decided by popular vote.

But perhaps Key has a deep abiding belief in the Kyle Lockwood flag-alternative and is exercising his personal commitment to change. He is committed to his principles.

Except…

When a photo-op presents itself…

In which case…

ASMS-CTU Media Statement on likely impact of the TPPA on biologic medicines

1

Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 3.02.44 pm

Longer wait and higher prices likely for some life-saving medicines under the TPPA

New Zealand is likely to come under pressure to extend the monopoly times for a new group of potentially life-saving specialty medicines under the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), say the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) and the Council of Trade Unions (CTU).

“At the moment the big drug companies can virtually name their price for some of these specialty medicines and there’s a risk that the TPPA will extend their stranglehold on these drugs by another three years, to eight years in total,” says Ian Powell, Executive Director of the ASMS.

“If that happens, it will add millions to New Zealand’s medicines bill and mean these drugs will cost us more for longer, and that they will stay out of the reach of many ordinary New Zealanders who need them.”

Dr Bill Rosenberg, CTU Economist and Director of Policy, says documents released under the Official Information Act and provided to him do not support the Government’s claims that the TPPA will not extend monopoly times for this special class of medicines known as biologics.

“These papers show that New Zealand’s authorities can approve new drugs in a much shorter time than three years – one to two years, and sometimes well under a year,” he says.

“That’s not going to sit well with the United States administration and we think it’s very likely that New Zealand will face strong pressure to comply with the US interpretation of the TPPA. The New Zealand Government has been signalling that the TPPA won’t change the way we currently handle these biologic medicines, but that’s at odds with the messages coming out of the US Administration and Congress.”

Copies of the OIA papers are available at http://www.asms.org.nz/news/asms-news/2016/03/15/longer-wait-higher-prices-likely-life-saving-medicines-tppa/.

Biologics are made with living organisms instead of using chemical processes. They are promising but they are also very expensive. One example of a biologic medicine is Keytruda, which is used to treat melanoma and has been the subject of debate recently over whether the New Zealand Government – via its central medicine-buying agency, PHARMAC – should fund it.

Auckland Clinical Microbiologist Dr Joshua Freeman says the consequences of extending the monopoly times on these medicines could be disastrous for New Zealanders.

“It could mean that doctors, nurses and other health professionals won’t be able to treat their patients with the most effective medicines available,” he says.

“And if you’re a patient, you’ll either have to wait longer for one of these specialty drugs or somehow find the money to pay for it yourself. Most people would struggle to do this as they can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. The reality is that many people could end up suffering unnecessarily or even dying if they can’t get the treatment that’s best for their illness.”

Ian Powell and Bill Rosenberg are calling on the Government to resist any pressure from the US on this issue, and an independent assessment of the TPPA’s impact on health in New Zealand is still needed.

A background paper looking at the issue in more detail is available at http://www.asms.org.nz/news/asms-news/2016/03/15/longer-wait-higher-prices-likely-life-saving-medicines-tppa/.

Bunnings workers remove their aprons in nationwide strike – First Union

Bunnings workers remove their aprons in nationwide strike

Workers from 29 Bunnings stores across the country will taking action and removing their signature aprons as part of ongoing strike action nationwide.

“Workers will replace their aprons with union stickers,” says FIRST Union Retail and Finance Secretary Maxine Gay.

“This action will likely continue until a collective agreement is settled.”

FIRST Union and Bunnings remain locked in negotiations.

“Bunnings is still refusing to compromise on rosters. Under the current agreement rosters are set when both the manager and worker agree, but under Bunning’s proposal the manager will have the power to simply impose a roster on the worker.”

“This is going to put family time at risk. You can’t plan when you have no control over your start and finish times.”

The apron strike follows a nationwide strike in September and December 2015, a letter from MPs to Bunnings CEO Jacqui Coombes and a store shut down at Bunnings New Lynn.

Climate Denier Paul Henry shocked at climate change – laughs it off anyway

47

paul-henry_0

The simple, brutal truth is that man made pollution has passed a tipping point where the feedback loops built into the biosphere are now beyond our ability to control. We are facing catastrophic climate change now – which makes the Green Parties and NGOs celebrations at Paris so galling…

February breaks global temperature records by ‘shocking’ amount

February smashed a century of global temperature records by “stunning” margin, according to data released by Nasa.

The unprecedented leap led scientists, usually wary of highlighting a single month’s temperature, to label the new record a “shocker” and warn of a “climate emergency”

The Nasa data shows the average global surface temperature in February was 1.35C warmer than the average temperature for the month between 1951-1980, a far bigger margin than ever seen before. The previous record, set just one month earlier in January, was 1.15C above the long-term average for that month.

“Nasa dropped a bombshell of a climate report,” said Jeff Masters and Bob Henson, who analysed the data on the Weather Underground website. “February dispensed with the one-month-old record by a full 0.21C – an extraordinary margin to beat a monthly world temperature record by.”

“This result is a true shocker, and yet another reminder of the incessant long-term rise in global temperature resulting from human-produced greenhouse gases,” said Masters and Henson. “We are now hurtling at a frightening pace toward the globally agreed maximum of 2C warming over pre-industrial levels.

…climate deniers like far right hate speech blogger Cameron Slater and climate minimalists like David Farrar have been allowed to dominate the debate – they need to be held accountable for their lies and muddying of the waters. Well known climate denier Paul Henry on his one hand clapping show this morning was confronted by the facts by a Scientist and then laughed them off.

The speed of the climate meltdown has shocked scientists and has highlighted how ineffective the IPCC has really been by not including the worst case scenarios as likelihood.

When the Arctic is 50 degrees hotter than average, the time for action is now.

As the planet super heats because of the CO2 we pump into the atmosphere, more and more heat is trapped. That heat pushes temperatures up, those temperatures melt ice at the polar caps. This melting ice does two things. Firstly it reduces the amount of white space on the planet that simply bounces heat back into space so it ends up quickening the heating process and more importantly it puts more fresh water into the oceans. As heat build, frozen methane trapped on the ocean floor and in Siberia is released in massive amounts, this rapidly melts remaining glaciers desalinating ocean conveyor pumps, particularly in the Labrador and Irminger Seas around southern Greenland which shut down the flow of heat from the tropics north which in turn plunges the Northern hemisphere into a new ice age.

Within the space of a decade we can go from a 7 degree hike in temperatures to a frozen snowball.

The ability for most species to adapt to that kind of climate extreme will see many become extinct and the ability for Governments and civilisations to function crumble.

We need to be on a war footing to cope with the changes we need to implement, not some foot dragging irrelevancy.

Our total denial of the realities we face if we do not make significant changes now is as bewildering as our blind ignorance. We deserve political leaders who will lead, not make excuses. The very existence of us as a species demands it.

Next week the oil conference on Monday will be held at Sky City Casino. The only response now is civil disobedience.

EXCLUSIVE: Why US Spy Boss is really in NZ

26

US spy boss in NZ on secret visit

The US director of national intelligence, James Clapper, is in New Zealand for farewell talks with the Government and spy chiefs.

It had been a secret visit until Mr Key was asked at his post cabinet press conference if he knew why a Globemaster C-17 was parked at Wellington airport.

Mr Key said “Yes, because Jim Clapper’s in town.”

Mr Clapper is the chief intelligence adviser to Mr Obama and oversees the 16 agencies within the US intelligence community including the CIA and National Security Agency.

Mr Key said Mr Clapper, who has been America’s intelligence chief since 2010, was on his way to a Five Eyes meeting in Australia.

“He is retiring before President [Barack] Obama effectively steps down in 2017 so I don’t know if he’ll be back in New Zealand again.”

Sources have told TDB that the real reason Jim Clapper is in NZ is because of Cheryl Gywn’s investigation into the SIS for aiding the CIA’s kidnapping and torture programme ‘extraordinary renditions’. The accusation is that the SIS helped the CIA find ‘black sites’ or secret prisons in the Pacific for terrorists taken by the CIA from South East Asia.

That is why Labour are being brought into the discussions because

a) some of these would have occurred on Labour’s watch

b) there needs to be secret bi-partisan agreement that Cheryl Gywn’s investigation into the SIS is as minimal as possible.

Clapper is here to put pressure on Key to turn the inquiry off or bury it. That demands real questions from our mainstream media…

1: How involved were SIS in locating secret prisons in the Pacific?

2: What politicians knew about the SIS helping find these secret prisons ?

3: Were NZ agencies involved in what amounts to war crimes?

4: Did Clapper threaten the NSA software and hardware investment into the GCSB if the inquiry wasn’t stymied?

I think another question that needs answering is whether or not the SIS helped target suspects for rendition as well.

Key is lying about the reasons Clapper is really here – it’s now time for the media to do their job.

UPDATE: Talking to more sources late last night, the focus will also be on how the SIS helped target individuals in Afghanistan for rendition and torture.

Let’s target the real gangs in NZ

5

1280-ganster-archetype

The gang problem in New Zealand is totally out of control. It is all pervasive and almost impossible to avoid. Unlike other problems like poverty, which the government has mainly managed to keep out of the rich areas, the gangs now infiltrate every suburb. It is time to identify them and replace welfare with warfare.

Some people are worried about how we identify them. I’m not. Even when they aren’t wearing items that overtly advertise their affiliation you can still identify them. The members. All men. I’ve heard rumours some chapters allow women but it’s still pretty rare. The women who do make it as members are largely tokenistic but I heard from friend, who had a cousin who knew one, say that they are worse than the males. Anyway, as I was saying, even when they are all suited, Working Style tip to brogue-ed toe, you can still tell. It might be subtle but somewhere there will be a badge or an insignia on a tie. Sometimes it’s a ring. But it’s not just the clothes. It’s the way they walk. In groups like they own the streets. The way that look at me. Like they want to rip my clothes off and …it’s just plain intimidating. I cross the road. I try not to catch their eye. They have no respect for women. I used to work in hospitality. I’ve heard how they talk. The strip clubs and the brothels.

They are the worst.

As for the women or the old  ladies as they call them, I ran into some this week. I was in Kingsland. There were four of them ahead of me in the queue for coffee. It was probably straight after the school run. I smelt them before I saw them. Reeking of stale wine they moved with their own miasma of cheap Pinot Gris. All clad in their too tight Lululemon and flashy trainers. Talking too loud, trying too hard. Scary though. They were tough. Hard. You could see life hadn’t been easy. They didn’t look, or smell happy. Still, they have made their bed as the saying goes.

Of course it’s the children I really feel sorry for. I mean you don’t choose your parents. There must be something we, as a society, can do? The way they dress them up and the stupid haircuts. They don’t stand a chance. It’s well known they drug them. There are surveys. Stats. Pills mainly from what I’ve heard. Anti-depressant’s and Ritalin. Everyone knows that Ritalin is just the gateway to meth. They probably just get the kids prescribed so they can use them as a precursor. They break them down and turn them into little bags of designer drugs with a street value of billions.

The whole family dynamic is just wrong. The kids have no chance and the women are trapped. I agree if the women want help to leave it should be available but many of them don’t even want to. That shouldn’t stop us trying to save the kids. Studies show that the rate of domestic violence and child abuse is through the roof. I know this is shocking but my hairdresser knows a couple of the woman. They have been her clients for years.

She calls them the Rotary Ho’s.

That’s why I support the governments initiative of a Gang Intelligence Centre. With 1 in 3 women in NZ experiencing physical and/ or sexual violence from a partner we have wasted enough time. Family violence is estimated to cost between $4 billion and $7billion a year. The gangs are also costing us money. A recent report put it at $700 million. I think that’s probably low. That also only reflects social welfare payments. It doesn’t calculate the revenue lost in tax evasion, property speculation and wrapped up in family Trusts.

Whatever we spend on the Gang Intelligence Centre is worth it if addresses our appalling rates of family violence. Let’s investigate all gangs. No one should be spared. Let’s start with the biggest; Rotary, Lions, Masons and of course the major players, the Police and the Churches.

Family violence, abuse and neglect occur in all our towns and our suburbs. So do gangs. It’s not okay.

John Key Should Resign as Tourism Minister: Greenpeace

5

GREENPEACE-LOGO-RGB-rev_0

Key’s continued backing for intensive dairy irrigation schemes, which will increase pollution of New Zealand’s rivers and streams, means he is unfit for the tourism job, claims Greenpeace.
Genevieve Toop, Greenpeace’s agriculture campaigner, said:

“John Key should resign as minister of tourism. Any tourism minister worth their salt would be doing all they could to halt the pollution of our rivers and streams. But Key’s not.

“He should stop throwing millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money at these irrigation schemes right now, and bring them to a halt. That would be great news for our tourism industry, and to everyone who likes swimming in clean rivers and lakes.

“But his continued refusal to do so is threatening our huge tourism industry.
“Key’s failing to do his job as minister of tourism. He should do the right thing and resign the position immediately.

“Clean, green farming is much better for our finances, our farmers and our international reputation, on which our tourism industry relies. It’s this that the government should be backing, not irrigation schemes which pollute our rivers and threaten our economy.”

This morning the Tourism Export Council called for a five-year ban on new irrigation schemes.

The government currently has around $120million of taxpayers’ money sitting in a fund, called Crown Irrigation Investments, which is earmarked for controversial irrigation schemes designed to expand industrial dairy agriculture. The government hopes to increase the amount of taxpayers’ money spent on these schemes to $400million.
