US spy boss in NZ on secret visit

The US director of national intelligence, James Clapper, is in New Zealand for farewell talks with the Government and spy chiefs.

It had been a secret visit until Mr Key was asked at his post cabinet press conference if he knew why a Globemaster C-17 was parked at Wellington airport.

Mr Key said “Yes, because Jim Clapper’s in town.”

Mr Clapper is the chief intelligence adviser to Mr Obama and oversees the 16 agencies within the US intelligence community including the CIA and National Security Agency.

Mr Key said Mr Clapper, who has been America’s intelligence chief since 2010, was on his way to a Five Eyes meeting in Australia.

“He is retiring before President [Barack] Obama effectively steps down in 2017 so I don’t know if he’ll be back in New Zealand again.”

Sources have told TDB that the real reason Jim Clapper is in NZ is because of Cheryl Gywn’s investigation into the SIS for aiding the CIA’s kidnapping and torture programme ‘extraordinary renditions’. The accusation is that the SIS helped the CIA find ‘black sites’ or secret prisons in the Pacific for terrorists taken by the CIA from South East Asia.

That is why Labour are being brought into the discussions because

a) some of these would have occurred on Labour’s watch

b) there needs to be secret bi-partisan agreement that Cheryl Gywn’s investigation into the SIS is as minimal as possible.

Clapper is here to put pressure on Key to turn the inquiry off or bury it. That demands real questions from our mainstream media…

1: How involved were SIS in locating secret prisons in the Pacific?

2: What politicians knew about the SIS helping find these secret prisons ?

3: Were NZ agencies involved in what amounts to war crimes?

4: Did Clapper threaten the NSA software and hardware investment into the GCSB if the inquiry wasn’t stymied? 

I think another question that needs answering is whether or not the SIS helped target suspects for rendition as well.

Key is lying about the reasons Clapper is really here – it’s now time for the media to do their job.

UPDATE: Talking to more sources late last night, the focus will also be on how the SIS helped target individuals in Afghanistan for rendition and torture.

  3. By sheer coincidence, I was at the “Spruce Goose”
    cafe yesterday and saw the huge, grey USAF aircraft sitting on the tarmac looming over the RNZAF hangar. I was wondering who or what was being ferried by that hulking monstrosity.

    By another coincidence, an aircraft bearing Iranian livery was sitting by the public terminal – no doubt Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif’s transport.

    If I’d had a camera on me, it would’ve made an interesting juxtaposition.

  4. This topic should have been picked up by msm as headline news, as it involves NZ’s spy/security activities on behalf of a foreign country.

    So why isn’t msm all over this? Because I’d say, media has been strictly instructed from he/they who must be obeyed, to turn a blind eye to it and dig for some fluff pieces instead to entertain the masses!

  9. I’m not sure what to think of this presumption, but in any case, a man like Clapper (does he always clap is flat hands on his head?) does not come here to simply say “goodbye, Mr Key, I am off into retirement soon”.

    There will certainly be more behind this visit than that.

    John Key performed his usual distraction tactic, being extremely casual about it all. When Key is casual, we have stuff to worry about, and media should start asking the really hard questions (that seem to never be asked).

    Stopping over may actually mean he is here to breathe down the PM’s neck, to ensure that any further changes to the spy laws (now there was a report released days ago) will give generous consideration to the interests of the US and the NSA.

    And going by the Guantanamo example, who knows, there may indeed be something to this story, that some undesired extremists may be kept in places we so far have no idea about, very close to home.

    I presume in Parliament and in front of media today, the story will be expanded, re the visit that is, so to say that Clapper just dropped in for a chat and a round of golf with John Key?!

      • Because U.S C17’s are used to move more than just cargo or VIPs. It’s got military gas tanks which means it can go from LA to Wellington in one go, secondarily there is less/ no stop overs, so you don’t have to do security sweeps. Other more technical countermeasures fitted to C17’s.

  11. The accusation at the beginning of the article is a serious ones; we, the public, deserve answers.

    There is nothing new about the CIA operating ‘black sites’ for prisons. More such sites could be a way of ‘closing ‘ Guantanamo, perhaps? If NZ is aiding the CIA in the manner suggested, it must be made known and our assistance stopped

Obama has in effect maintained the Bush doctrine that “enemy combatants” are neither alleged criminals nor soldiers.     Even if they actually are terrorists, that does not leave them devoid of rights. I would also argue that to treat terrorists other than as common criminals, deserving of formal criminal process, contributes to their glorification and gives them a status they do not deserve. But formal process is essential because we know for certain that they often pick up people who are entirely innocent.”

  13. The only reason Crapper, I mean Clapper would be here is to ensure that NZ stays in line with the ” Evil Empire’s” plans and schemes to maintain its world hegemony. They are twisting Australia’s arm to station more bombers there, to counter the “Chinese threat” to world peace. They probably want to militarise NZ as well. to make sure no economy is stronger than the USA.

    • Perhaps Key misunderstood when Clapper said to him “we need to organise a false flag event in NZ” and Key organised the flag referendum. Clapper is here to explain what was really required

  14. Obama is obviously coming for a visit. The Aussies are doing a deal with Iran to return asylum seekers. John Key didn’t hesitate to say who was in town. This could be just a cover to let the CIA take over the South Pacific. Or maybe there are just some bridges to strengthen between our countries to keep us safe from the ever present threat of Islamic fundamentalists. Living here in Perth and visiting Indonesia every now and then makes me very aware of the ever present danger of Sharia law and the cancer that it spreads.
    Yes your right Martin the msm should do its job and find out the facts.
