Queer rights demonstrators say they won’t rest until a Bill to define ‘woman’ and ‘man’ is stopped.
Defy Definition protest organisers estimated 10,000 people across five cities marched on Saturday to reject New Zealand First’s effort to define all women as adult human biological females, and all men as adult human biological males.
The Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill passed its first reading in Parliament last month, and is open for submissions until July 2.
The demonstrations were co-ordinated by several rainbow groups including Queer Endurance Defiance, Rainbow Action Tāmaki and Qtopia.
In a joint statement, they said the Bill erased transgender and intersex people.
“We argue there is no benefit to defining gender and sex into law, all it does is punish already marginalised communities and undermine previously established cross-parliamentary consensus on self-ID, ignoring the expert recommendations of the Law Commission.”

I have been the only person on the Left who has criticised the manner in which the woke went about Trans rights and I have argued that identity politics relies on pure temple dynamics and not the Broadchurch of class solidarity which has generated a culture war backlash that has driven huge numbers into the arms of the reactionary alt-right.
But my criticism of non-binary activists, fourth wave feminists and middle class micro aggression policing stormtroopers aside, I believe Tran people are people and deserve way more respect than this Right Wing Hate Troll Performance Art of defining a woman.
