Hand of Trump – why World Cup matters and why this one has failed miserably

I’m not a big Sports person.

Don’t get me wrong.

I am in awe of their physical skill, I think what Simone Biles does is superhuman, but my hero’s are artists, philosophers and scientists.

But I believe sport matters because for a specific set time, regardless of creed, religion or country, everyone agrees to abide by a set of clear rules and I think we can all do with more of that.

That’s why the World Cup matters and that’s why this one has failed because America has weaponised access to it in a way that disgraces the whole point of global sports.

• Thousands of fans from countries subject to U.S. travel restrictions or enhanced vetting struggled to obtain visas despite holding World Cup tickets.
• Iranian football authorities said FIFA’s allocation of tickets for Iranian supporters at U.S. matches was revoked, leaving many fans who had already booked flights and accommodation without access to games.
• Moroccan supporters reported being denied U.S. visas despite having purchased tickets.
• Supporters from Ivory Coast also reported visa refusals, with their official supporters’ organisation cancelling its planned trip.
• A Somali referee, Omar Artan, became the first Somali selected to officiate at a World Cup but was denied entry to the United States despite holding a valid visa.
• Iraqi player Aymen Hussein was reportedly detained and questioned for several hours on arrival, while Iraq’s team photographer was refused entry.
• Journalists from Iran and several African nations also reported visa problems that prevented them from covering the tournament across all host countries

Now we have Hand of Trump where Trump boasts that he interfered with a red card ruling against one of his Teams players!

We appreciate Soccer is corrupt, but the rules on the field inoculates the game played from that corruption, Trump has managed to break onto the pitch and  cheat.

Only Trump could corrupt the corrupt.
