New Zealand warned by China of missile test in South Pacific, Winston Peters expresses concern
Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters says New Zealand is “deeply concerned” by China testing a “nuclear-capable” missile in the South Pacific, characterising it as inconsistent with peace in the region.
Chinese state media Xinhua on Monday night said the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy successfully conducted the test launch of a strategic missile by a submarine.
“The PLA Navy said that one strategic nuclear submarine of the navy successfully launched a strategic missile carrying a dummy warhead toward relevant high seas of the Pacific Ocean at 12:01 p.m., which landed precisely within the designated waters,” the agency said.
It described the test launch as a “routine arrangement” as part of the PLA Navy’s “annual training”, the same language used by China following a 2024 missile launch.
The agency said the Navy claimed the test launch “complies with international law and international practice, and is not directed at any specific country or target”.
Peters said China told New Zealand earlier today of its plan to launch a long-range ballistic missile into the South Pacific and then carried out the test “within hours of informing us”, despite “our long-standing concern about this type of activity”.
“New Zealand considers this an unwelcome and concerning development,” Peters said.
“We, like our neighbours in other Pacific countries, have no interest in China using the South Pacific as a testing site for missile capability.

Article 6 of the new treaty states that each party to the agreement “recognises that an armed attack on any of the parties within the Pacific would be dangerous to each other’s peace and security as well as the security of the Pacific, and declares that it would act to meet the common danger, in accordance with its domestic processes”.
…we have an increasingly aggressive China and an increasingly unhinged America.

Strangely the US fired a missile into the Pacific as well and nobody said anything.
The unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base on March 3, 2026, targeted the Ronald Reagan Ballistic missile test range on the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
Did the US ask the indigenous Marshall islanders for permission before they used one their islands as target practice for an unarmed nuclear missile test?
No.
Do we give a shit?
No.
But the Chinese fire an unarmed nuclear missile into the open ocean and we all go nuts.
And we should.
But aren’t we being hypocritical?
The Yanks fire an unarmed ICBM nuclear missile into an Island in the Pacific to practice killing Chinese people, and we say nothing.
The Chinese fire an unarmed SLBM nuclear missile into the sea to practic killing us, and now we are concerned?
Nuclear weapons have one purpose, to commit genocide.
When we practice firing nuclear missiles to commit genocide against Chinese people, we don’t think it is provocative, but they might.
And when I say we, I mean the US Australia and us.
The sooner we cut all military ties with the US and Australia and declare ouselves a neutral state like Switzerland the better.
Perhaps we should stop supporting the US on its regular transits through the Taiwan Straits just ends of km off China’s shores.

This year on March 2026, the US launched a Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from California hitting a target in the Pacific Ocean near the Marshall Islands.
Situated halfway between the US and Australia, he Marshall Islands have suffered 67 U.S. nuclear tests, including the Castle Bravo hydrogen bomb test. The Castle Bravo blast was 1,000 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The explosion vaporized entire islands, left a crater 6,500 feet wide, and sent a radioactive mushroom cloud nearly 25 miles into the atmosphere.
The southern Marshall islands are still inhabited by the native people, but their northern Islands are uninhabitable. The huge Dome built to contain nuclear waste on Runit Island, is currently leaking highly toxic plutonium into the Pacific Ocean.
