The Strait of Hormuz blockade threat has just taken a surreal turn — with Donald Trump now suggesting the US will close the very chokepoint the world feared Iran might shut. Oil markets have already flinched. The geopolitical logic? That’s another story.

Oil price jumps on news US navy will blockade Strait of Hormuz
Oil prices have spiked in early trading after the US military announced it will begin a blockade “of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports” at 10:00am Monday ET – 2am Tuesday NZT.
The price of US crude oil rose 8% to US$104.24 a barrel and Brent crude oil, the international standard, rose 7% to US$102.29 in early trading.
“The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman”, US CENTCOM said.
It said it would still allow ships traveling between non-Iranian ports to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
The spectre of increased oil prices from the blockade prompted a post on X by Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf.
Brent crude has swung dramatically during the Iran war, rising from roughly US$70 per barrel before the war in late February to more than US$119 at times. At the weekend, ahead of the peace talks, Brent for June delivery fell 0.8% to US$95.20 per barrel.
