  1. Just as pointless as recycling, riding a bike or becoming carbon neutral by 2050 is anything New Zealand can do to meaningfully slow the global catastrophies coming our way.
Blocking motorways in Wellington is not going to stop the Chinese, the Indians, the Bangladeshis or any of the other developing industrializing nations from propelling their peoples to prosperity on the back of cheap, plentiful coal and gas.
New Zealand could sink into the ocean tomorrow and it would make no difference.
There are just too many corporate vested interests tied to global politicians to turn this around.
The only way ironically is a one world militarised green government.
    Sorry but its over.

    1. Oh, the irony indeed, but such a government or system of governance may not be that far off if the plans of the elitist think-tanks have anything to em.

    2. That is why there won’t be a mass movement purely around pollution in any country. Instead the popular revolt will be against collapsing living standards in Europe, the U.S. and many other places.

  2. Of course the main game is to tackle the corporates and that is being done all the time, but not by a mass movement, it is more the pointy end of the spear activists. But that will change, think about it, 400 Aucklanders with shagged houses, in what were assumed by the occupants to be in the safe enough ’burbs. Ultimately down to Climate Disaster. And many out at the West Coast beaches, and the Gabrielle fallout around the country which as Martyn mentions has affected food supply and prices as well as being genuine regional disasters.

There is an El Niño building. To quote even the NZ Herald…
    –Impacts of El Niño:
Of course, major events related to El Niño have serious social and economic impacts. Droughts, floods, heatwaves and other changes can severely disrupt agriculture, fisheries, health, energy demand and air quality (mainly from wildfires).

Research shows El Niño “persistently reduces country-level economic growth”, with damage now estimated in the trillions of US dollars.

Globally, El Niño is the largest cause of droughts; they are more intense, set in quicker and increase the risk of wildfires, especially in Australia, Indonesia and Brazil. In the weak 2019-20 El Niño, smoke from fires in eastern Australia affected the southern hemisphere to the extent that it blocked the sun and may have exacerbated the subsequent La Niña conditions.

But micro action is to be encouraged regardless–eating more plant based, learn how to look after yourself and friends/family when the shit goes down, all good stuff–live the change you want to see.

Of course the filthy industrial farmers (I know some modern thinking smaller operators) with their animal cruelty and exploitation–discarded bobby calves, winter grazing (animals kept in a mud slurry), overloading of nitrogen inputs which have wrecked so many waterways, hogging aquifers for irrigation–will never take a holistic view–until they are forced to.

As public understanding builds direct action will have to include:
    • Blockade Fertiliser warehouses and production–Balance etc. and individual local Fert spreaders
    • Blockade wharves and Petrol stations on a strategic basis
    • Name and shame the Corporates with mass media channel campaigns, expose Green Washing
    • Campaign for heavily subsidised solar panels and rain water collection tanks for all dwellings as practicable
    • A public works and infrastructure department, including waste collection and recycling to be in public ownership
    • Electricity generation and supply returned to public ownership
you know the list by now…

  3. I have sound reasons to believe that this world is coming to a fiery end & that there is a rescue plan. A book written about 2500 years ago tells us that there will be a time of trouble such as never was just before that end while also saying that we can be delivered.
You are free to decide what you believe & I fully support actions that protect our environment (it is logical that since we have laws to enable society to function the environment will have activities that either preserve or destroy its ability to sustain us) the selfishness that mostly rules in people does not give me any hope that we will be able to save ourself from the coming destruction.

    1. Written 2500 years ago? Lost in translation? What language(s) was it written in, when was it translated and can the translations be trusted as true and accurate account?

Language has a tendency to be ideological motivated, used to prop up the position and the intentions of powerful players. Translation offers additional challenges.

    2. Can I suggest the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky – far more engaging fiction and a lot closer to reality -lol-

  4. we’re only one wet bulb event away from planes being shot from the sky.

Ministry for the Future – Kim Stanley Robinson

    1. What? Doesn’t the usual “we can’t possibly do anything about it, because we’re so little” argument flick your switch?
