My Final Word: Jools Topp & the New Zealand We’ve Lost

This week, Martyn reflects on the life and legacy of Jools Topp and what her passing means for New Zealand.
Alongside her sister Dame Lynda Topp, Jools helped shape modern Aotearoa through music, activism, humour, and an unapologetic commitment to being herself.
From performing before homosexuality was decriminalised, to campaigning for nuclear-free New Zealand, opposing the Springbok Tour, and advocating for social justice, the Topp Twins became one of the country’s most beloved cultural institutions.
Martyn also reflects on another New Zealand trailblazer, Georgina Beyer, and what their success said about a country capable of looking beyond prejudice and rewarding character.
As New Zealand continues to wrestle with division, culture wars, and political tribalism, the passing of Jools Topp feels like the loss of something deeper — a reminder of a more generous, egalitarian version of ourselves.
In solidarity, the revolution continues.
Ka kite.
