Why we need an alternative to Story and Seven Sharp at 7pm weeknights

The appalling way Story and Seven Sharp covered the TPPA protests is just the latest example of why we desperately need an alternative to these right wing propaganda shows masquerading as current affairs.

Story was created because TV3 management killed off Campbell Live for political reasons and the vicious rants against Amanda Bailey and Waitangi Day highlight the privileged world view of Mike Hosking, a man so in love with himself he defines narcism.

The 4th estate has died. It has capitulated to corporate interests over holding the powerful to account. That most NZers think the TPPA is a trade deal is an example of this wilful ignorance. That most NZers think the repeal of section 59 was an ‘anti-smacking’ law is an example of this wilful ignorance. That most NZers think hungry children is the blame of the parent is an example of this wilful ignorance. That Most NZers think Maori get special privilege is an example of this wilful ignorance. That most NZers don’t think rape culture is a real and definable threat to our society is an example of this wilful ignorance. That so many NZers think climate change isn’t man made is an example of this wilful ignorance. That so many NZers thought Dirty Politics wasn’t much of an issue or that mass surveillance isn’t really happening are also examples of this wilful ignorance.

All of which feeds back into a mainstream media who are propagating this crap rather than challenge it.

Where the 4th estate has failed, the 5th estate must succeed. Next week a new current affairs show to go up against Story and Seven Sharp at 7pm will be announced. If you want to help this new endeavour – spread it on social media.

  1. An excellent thought provoking post. I am awaiting the details of this new current affairs show. I can imagine the hard work needed to produce such a programme in order to inform and educate the public.

    So much mind numbing and brainwashing that most are not even aware of how much their brains and emotions have been negatively impacted and manipulated. Very subtle and cunning these (MSM) TV show and news producers are. Keep the masses entertained and give them very little honest substance and truths.

    The zombie dance with our glazed eyes only being entertained with mostly nonsense and fluff.
    Some few believe that they are hearing the truths – some know it is mostly a load of BS.

    Another new current affairs program on top of the biased nonsense coming from pro- jonky donky zealots like mike hoseKing will likely be more of the same. Mind numbing propaganda in disguise as entertainment – smelling like the superficial and meaningless fox news channel.
    Those with knowledge and compassion do not get the funding to produce a show worth watching so I would not count on anything much different coming down the TV media pike. Stick with RT.com and TDB and dare I say Facebook as well.

    TV — more and more seems to be the deadlands and unless we watch with a discerning and critical and aware eye, we may just be allowing their brainwashing to penetrate. Martyn, I would not count on this new show being much different, but then we can have our hopes up. Yeh right !

    • The burglars the Greens like are the burglars in Labour and National who have stolen and implemented the Greens’ policies; they haven’t enjoyed the lack of acknowledgment or attribution though.

    Now expect the wrath of the establishment to be unleashed upon you and your immediate supporters. There is one thing ‘the powers that be’ and their puppets and minions cannot allow, and that is truth. That is why so many independents have already been killed off, and why The Independent (newspaper, UK) is no longer independent.

    • I doubt the “establishment” will even notice. It will have little to no effect on the dominant conversation, except giving the far left echo chamber another venue to moan. You want to be relevant? Try something other than an ego driven wankfest.

    We need a media that places the ;pressure on Government to act honesty with integrity which does not happen as they have no Journalists out there not asking Government the heard questions.

    We know that you at TDB will do this with integrity as no one else is currently doing now.

    The Government is not allowing anybody to interview them over their policies and outcomes so we need to step up here.

    John Campbell even has no luck getting hold of any ministers on issues of public importance now we see, and not for the want of trying.

    We are confident in TDB staging a new news hound.

  10. Oh, but can we give Duncan Garner a miss next week, when he drives the fastest car in New Zealand, as the trailer for Story has told us? He wants to play with a big toy that idiot, drive a fast Porsche next week, on his show, so all can watch him, the “cool dude”, what a sick joke, masquerading indeed, for supposed “current affairs”.

    To keep my sanity I drop in here and a few other blogs and websites on the web every day. Keep it up, dear friends, I am desperate to hear the other side of the story.

  11. TV is dead in NZ – if you wish to pay for Sky, its just full of repeats and further payment is needed on top of the basic bundle for anything extra and its just a rort.

    We do watch Aljazeera for world news and excellent it is and we tune into RNZ and watch John Campbell at 5pm but I think to myself that John is treading on toes already and asking hard questions, the owner of Talley’s refused to chat with him the other evening and actually John quoted Talley as saying “I do not like that man”. Most people on the other side of any investigation he is dealing with refuse to come on to answer to his questions as well. Its pretty obvious to me he will be shifted sometime with an excuse of programme rescheduling. I can see he will start bringing in cardboard cutouts of the people who habitually refuse to chat with him to sit with him. What a laugh that will be – satire at its best.

    Can’t wait for your new programme Martyn at 7.01 on this site. John needs to start up a blog site of his own or get backers for him to allow him his own independant platform – but then it goes back to the Government to provide the airwaves – which will never happen.

    • Kate – have you checked out the massively popular worldwide news and docu channel RT.COM on Channel 92 on Sky ?
      They have some very good shows like : Max Keiser ; In the Now ; Watching the Hawks and The Big Picture and Crosstalk. Worth a check out and it is not a pro Russian station as the dimwit John Kerry and HIllary Clinton want everyone to believe. They are afraid of the truth coming out and RT does just that and much more. Dare I say, many of us watch RT daily and feel they are better and more honest than Aljazeera.

      Especially the Max Keiser show ; Crossfire ; Watching the Hawks and The Big Picture.
      There is a very good reason why John Kerry and Hillary Clinton hate RT because it is where we hear the worlds truths that is sadly missing in most media. They feel threatened by RT because it is gaining in popularity worldwide massively and no one pays them to put out biased garbage.
      We watch it daily and trust it and recommend it highly.

When Mike Hosking wants to know what New Zealanders think about anything he tells everyone round him what they should think and they all reply “Yes Sir, no sir, three bags full sir!” Then Hosking, smugly says, “See I was right all along, they think the same as me, just like all other New Zealanders.”
    Don’t know why he doesn’t work for George FM. Most of the other John Key bootlickers gravitate there.

  15. If it’s just going to be available via a live stream like Table Talk you’re not going to get the numbers. WE can’t watch a live stream on our computer so how many more will have this problem. Found War on News via TVNZ7, continued Citizen A via You Tube. Still watching left-wing vlogs via You Tube. Will watch and promote IF it is accessable via a smart tv -without a sky subscription.
