The Liberal Agenda – CPAG: The drivers of deprivation and poverty
There are many factors that keep people poor

I felt sorry for James Shaw last Wednesday morning. Guyon Espiner was like a lion with his head in his mouth, and all Minister Shaw could do was wave his hands. Guyon is right, the Green Party have been ineffectual advocating for the environment as part of this coalition. But it isn’t Minister Shaw’s fault. He is an incredibly smart and hardworking Minister with absolutely no bargaining power. And that lack of bargaining power is thanks to his own party members tying his hands.
Eventually, you have to muster the courage to do the right thing, or say what needs to be said about what is wrong in an organisation, however painful and difficult, and sometimes dangerous, that might be.
Over the past couple of weeks New Zealand has had a widespread outbreak of us-ness. It has been great. I particularly like the story of the three young women, school students, who saw a bus driver close the doors on a woman wearing a hijab, talked to her, waited with her, accompanied her on the next bus and ensured a complaint was laid even though the counter staff said it could not happen. They are cultural heroes!
Isn’t it incredible how left wing journalists, activists, Māori, environmentalists, Greenpeace, the Green Party, earthquake survivors and left wing bloggers all have to accept erosions of civil liberties in NZ, except for white supremacists who apparently can plot atrocities for years and the State doesn’t seem to want to annoy them.
While it was good to read of Facebook’s banning white nationalist content from its platforms the company needs to be more proactive on ALL hate speech and vile content videos.
NZ First will not be able to blow any of their dog whistles any longer and will be reliant on Shane Jones winning Northland to remain in Parliament as they currently tread water sub 5%.
Normally events can be eclipsed, or glossed over or forgotten, but this atrocity is unique to us in modern political history and it has stamped something deep into our national psyche and many are privately thankful Jacinda was here to lead us through what has been a test for who we think we are and who we want to be so I think the ramifications of this event will be felt deep into the 2020 election.
The beauty, strength, compassion, grace and dignity Jacinda & the vast, vast majority of New Zealanders have shown in the face of this horrific atrocity has made me prouder to be a Kiwi than any other single time in my life.
The media has had a lot to do with shaping negative attitudes towards Muslims. A recent University of Alabama study found terrorist attacks by Muslim extremists receive 357 percent more media coverage than attacks committed by non-Muslims.
