Prime Minister Christopher Luxon held crisis talks with Foreign Minister Winston Peters in the Beehive last night after Peters’ office released emails to the Herald showing Luxon wanted to shift the Government’s position to show “explicit public support” for the US-led war in Iran days after it broke out.
Luxon was talked out of this position by Peters and staff in his office, the emails show.
Responding to the emails before the crisis meeting, a spokesman for Peters said Luxon’s support for the war was “imprudent” and would have “run counter to New Zealand’s national interests”.
“Experience matters in foreign policy,” he said.
The Herald contacted Luxon’s office for their response to the story. A spokesman for Luxon responded on Wednesday night, after the meeting, saying the emails “mischaracterise the PM’s position”.

This is open warfare between National and NZ First

Firstly – Make no mistake, this is open warfare between NZ First and National now.
There’s no way Winston would have released these details unless he wanted to release them. They would have been redacted if he didn’t want it going out, the sly old fox knows exactly what he’s doing and he is setting Luxon up for a butchering.
It is an absolute opening salvo to destabilise National and set in play the possibility of having a snap election.
The last thing Winston thirsts for is Prime Ministership and by kneecapping Luxon and kicking the legs out from under National, it allows him to cannibalise the National vote, and he will do it in a heartbeat.
Winston is fantasising about a 20% Party Vote and believes that will give him the Prime Ministership.
Winston has clearly kept all the receipts and has no problem drip feeding them to the public for the next 6 months and just bleed Luxon out.
It’s brutal politics driven by a man who can almost taste the position he has yearned for his entire career.
Be clear, this has been leaked not for New Zealand First, but for Winston First.
Secondly – What the Christ was Luxon thinking? He wanted to side with this illegal war on Iran that is now seeing us bleed at the pumps!

“What was Luxon thinking?” I’m confident that it had more than a little to do with the Trump administration’s and Hegseth’s in particular description of this war as a “holy war” and somehow linked to the evangelicals’ belief in the end times, the rapture and all that. If that had nothing to do with it, then Luxon is demonstrating again how out of his depth he is.
Why is it National’s position ALWAYS to to support the US. No independent stance. NEVER it appears. You name it theyr’e there with their hand up. Simply the way the right lean? Or something more sinister?

He’s such a weasel he’ll try framing causing a snap election as statesmanship: “we are facing the worst energy crisis our nation has ever experienced, this coming crisis requires a government with a new three year mandate to deal with, we need an election now, we can’t afford six months of petty tribalism”
He’s polling extremely high for NZF and with the energy crisis and war and economic conditions only set to get worse his polling may go down with the government he’s associated with if the govt continues.
A snap election may help him get more seats but it’d end the govt, the public wouldn’t reelect a three way coalition that can’t work together in a crisis to deal with the same crisis.
However, Winston loves being in the cross benches, he works best as an opposition leader and he wouldn’t care if labour gets in, as long as he’s sucking up National and Acts votes, all good, he can frame himself as “the true opposition to labour” while also occasionally helping labour pass bills the Greens won’t, like he did throughout the fifth labour govt and claiming “pragmatism”
Don’t underestimate his self interest and this govt is a sinking ship, he’ll be asking himself pull the plug now with high polling before the shit hits the fan or do I try bleed national dry for six months, what gets me more seats.

Reminds me of Brash in 2005 promising the Bush administration that our nuclear free policy would be ” gone by lunchtime ” then unwisely tried to deny it and made it a campaign issue regarding our then independent foreign policy that Helen used against the National party relentlessly.
