NZCTU welcomes Greensβ tax plan as a step toward fairness for working people

The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi (NZCTU) supports the direction of the Green Partyβs taxation policy, which would increase taxation on capital and wealth while reducing the burden on earned income.
NZCTU President Sandra Grey says New Zealandβs tax system had long been stacked against working people.
βEvery dollar a worker earns gets taxed β but the wealthiest New Zealanders often pay little or nothing. That needs to change. We need taxation that lifts the load from working people and makes sure the wealthy are actually paying what they owe,β says Grey.
The NBR rich list shows the combined wealth of New Zealandβs richest 150 individuals and families grew substantially over the past year, while many working families continue to struggle with the cost of living.
Grey says the Green Partyβs proposal would help address that inequality.
βThis plan takes aim at landlords and property speculators. It also includes inheritance taxes to start tackling the growing gap in wealth between generations. This is a much-needed conversation in New Zealand.β
Grey says the Greensβ plan would also provide additional resources to help make sure taxation is collected properly.
βMaking sure multinationals canβt use complex structures to minimise their obligations and reforming the use of trusts to minimise tax β these are long-overdue changes. The system needs serious reform, and itβs good to see this is now an election issue.
βVoters deserve to see fully costed fiscal and taxation plans from every party before they go to the polls, so that they have clarity when they vote. The NZCTU will always back plans that put working people, strong public services, and communities first β and this is a step in that direction.

Thank you NZCTU for welcoming Greens’ tax plan β it looks very fair to me, so why is Hipkins dragging his heels and saying ‘no to wealth taxes and inheritance taxes’? Hipkins if you are not properly on board for the Left, step down now so the Left can commit to a united front for the issues that would help our country and our workers β just for a change! Why the hell can’t the wealthy step up, for once, and pay their way? We are all so over this greedy, self-absorbed bunch of wannabees!
Also fundamental issues with National’s KiwiSaver policy being pointed out by many including a barb left by Key! Can this arrogant Luxon cretin get anything right? I know he is inept but he’s getting worse?
