My Final Word: What If Scott Watson Is Innocent?
This week, Martyn examines the Supreme Court decision to reopen the Scott Watson murder case.
The 1998 disappearance and murder of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope remains one of New Zealand’s most controversial criminal cases. Now the Supreme Court will reconsider the reliability of key witness Guy Wallace.
For decades critics have questioned the evidence:
– the sighting of a double-masted ketch
– the disputed hair evidence
– prison informants used during the trial
– and the interrogation methods later linked to unsafe police interview techniques.
If Scott Watson is innocent, New Zealand may have kept an innocent man behind bars for 27 years.
No matter what else is happening in the world, justice still matters.
In solidarity, the revolution continues.
I believe from the evidence that Scott Watson was not the guy who did this crime.
And it’s possible he is innocent we have a bad track record for miscarriages of justice. I watched the doco on this and the witnesses said it was not the same boat but our police dig their heals in when they are not always right and tend to go for the most obvious person. And once the police have their mind set on a person that’s pretty much it.
The prosecution’s case does not stack up, does not provide any proof of a motive and does not provide anything that proves guilt ‘beyond reasonable doubt’…the benchmark for a guilty verdict.
I know a number of lifetime boat people….fanatics.
They know their boats inside and out.
They tell me that there are double – masted ketches with round portholes around and said it’s highly likely that Guy Wallace, the water taxi pilot, who said he saw a double- masted ketch and saw a scruffy guy on the water taxi that night was accurate.
Those guy’s know their stuff is what they tell me.
The police deliberately pressured and
confused him.
It was a terrible unprofessional investigation ..but this is N.Z….land of the unprofessional people who have the audacity to call themselves professionals …you see it everywhere.
