Judge rejects billionaire Jim Grenon’s bid to stop media reporting
Billionaire Jim Grenon failed to stop media reporting on his ongoing involvement in a “wholly unsuccessful” defamation case he funded against TVNZ, as the state broadcaster tried to get him to pay costs of nearly $300,000.
On Thursday, before the costs hearing even began, Grenon’s lawyer Chris Patterson tried to suppress his client’s involvement as a “non-party”. Patterson said he wanted to ensure his client’s reputation wasn’t attacked in reporting.
Something Judge David Clark declined, saying there was genuine public interest in the reporting.
“We’ve got a funder who has a prominent position himself and he’s entitled to be heard. We’re having a hearing for him to be heard and have a say through you. That’s why we’ve got a costs hearing … It is Mr Grenon who decided to fund the litigation through Mr Batchelor. That is not a disputed issue … He takes the risk himself by putting his hand up by being involved in this proceeding,” Judge Clark said.

He moved to the country through an ‘Investor Immigrant’ program and resides with his partner in a prominent property in Takapuna, Auckland.’ Whoopee do for him! I need to ask again why NZ continues to allow people, with no moral fortitude, to set up in our country.
