WAATEA NEWS COLUMN: More Young Māori in Māori electorates could have huge impact this election
Last years Tāmaki Makaurau by-election result was a shock.
Peeni Henare, a legacy Māori politician was staggeringly beaten by a Māori Party who adopted a social media first election campaign that resulted in one of the great by-election upsets.
The latest demographic data on Māori electorates will give Te Pati Māori AND the Greens an enormous amount of optimism going into this years election.
More than half of Māori are still on the Māori roll, which undermines Winston Peters claim that Māori don’t want the Māori Electorates and that he can repeal them after the next election, but it’s the demographics that paint a very interesting story.
70% of the Māori population are under the age of 40, this is an enormous demographic bubble that Te Pati Māori connected with during the Tāmaki Makaurau by-election. This next generation of Māori voters have come through Māori immersion education and refuse point blank to be second class citizens in their own country.
They believe they never ceded sovereignty and view the Treaty with the same passion Americans view their Declaration of Independence.
The Māori Electorates have traditionally been older more conservative Māori but this huge demographic bubble are enormously changing those dynamics.
Nearly 58 percent of Māori aged 18 to 24 are now enrolled on the Māori roll.
This speaks volumes of where those Māori Electorates will now go especially as Te Pati Māori and Greens dominate those age brackets. If the much rumoured Kakariki Alliance between TPM and Greens eventuates and Te Pati Māori advises their supporters to adopt the MMP voting strategy of candidate voting TPM and Party voting Green, it will create an MMP Overhang while recycling wasted TPM vote to the Greens which would keep the Greens above NZF.
Labour view winning back the Māori Electorates as their goal, which damages their MMP chances. They should consider their goal to win back the 23% of Māori in the general seats who voted National.
How this new demographic bubble votes in the Māori Electorates will determine if this Right Wing Government loses or not wins on Election night.
Young Maori need to get the rest of their peers on the roll and get them out to vote .As a boomer I have joined the Maori roll and intend to vote Maori and green because they are the only two parties that want every person in NZ to be lifted out of poverty .Their policies will not suit all people but will help the 70% that are in deep shit right now .
CHANGE is what is needed for NZ to become a great nation .We are more than meat ,wool and milk .
Our biggest driver of growth will be getting ALL people working together as a whole for the betterment of ALL not just the 10% .
When Jacinda was PM the 10% sent her an open letter in the Herald asking to be taxed more .Over 100 were named on the list .Where are those same 100 now are they lining up to ask Luxon to tax them more ?no they are reaping the extra income he sends their way and paying 9% tax on a good day .
Yes they as a group pay a lot of tax but they should be paying 25% like my son who earns 90K on a good year .
Winston has too much to say for himself. He believes he is right about everything as well as untouchable. He needs to stop making statements that verge on lies and stick to the plain facts. Great that young Maori are taking up the challenge and making sure they are enrolled. Important they KEEP CHECKING, as not that long ago names were being removed! I agree, Maori NEVER ceded sovereignty and believe that the Treaty is a sacrosanct document that should NEVER be meddled with as it was signed in good faith by Maori and the Crown. This CoC is guilty of a breach of contract regarding our Treaty so how come they were able to do that? It’s unconscionable and shows a complete lack of moral stature. Shame on Winston, Seymour and Luxon – it will come back and bite them!
