The report showed just over 50% of the lunches met nutritional standards in 2025, while up to 20,000 were being returned uneaten every day.
The Audit Office initiated a review into the coalition Government’s reformed school lunch programme after receiving complaints and seeing media reports about late deliveries or no-shows, low quality meals and food safety concerns in 2025.

The truth is ACT have always hate blamed hungry children because they believe they shouldn’t be forced to pay for what ACT sees as the parent’s responsibility for feeding their own children.
It is cruelty dressed up as Libertarian philosophy.
When hunger is so prevalent, a nutritious Breakfast and Lunch is the silver bullet for educational achievement and school attendance.
Other western nations have free Breakfast and Lunches at school, why is it so impossible to do here?
We need to expand the programme to be universal, genuinely nutritious and go back to the money going into small and local businesses to help generate jobs!
What ACT have done to school lunches is the most obvious example of what ACT does to public services, it makes them cheaper and shittier..
Why would you want ACT to do to other public services what it has done to school lunches?
Our Children deserve better food than what they feed prisoners in NZ!

Good School meal programs generate approximately 1.3 to 2.6 times their initial investment in local economic activity. ie-“According to Mana College principal Jeff Chapman, the previous local model was working well. The meals were reliable, high-quality and nutritious, he said. “It was a nice little circular local economy, and it was working great. The contractor was providing local employment and using local food,” he said. That is a stark contrast to many schools’ experiences this year.
Seymours “saving” is a typical ACT party deceit using an accounting illusion that borrows from the future productivity of the workforce and the health of the community.

Our non entitled children are prisoners of this plutocracy and Seymour despises the fact that his government should be in any way responsible for providing even corporate slop for our poorest exploited people that his party and his government are along with the NZLP are responsible for supporting harsh corporate neoliberal policies that have created this crisis in the first place.
If there was any justice Seymour should be incarcerated along with his donors and political colleagues for economic crimes against New Zealanders.
Now, in fairness, libertarian philosophy _is_ cruelty.
Seymour’s tactic is to undermine and discredit the school lunch programme until it is so unpopular and despised that he will have a good excuse to wipe it completely – which has always been his aim.

My grandson is attending ST PAULS in Hamilton next year as a day student .His father has to pay $3000 for lunches .No he is not getting 1000 meals more like 200 ,so they are way more than $3 .And ,no, he is not allowed to pack marmite sandwiches from home .
You’d think Seymour was intentionally trying to self sabotage the lunch programme or just show off his ministerial incompetence? Maybe both.
Wee Davey doesn’t believe the school lunch program should exist at all, but if it absolutely has to exist to keep the peasantry from revolting, then it should be done on the smell of an oily rag… and taste like it. By that metric, his efforts have been a roaring success. Perhaps he should market the entire dismal fiasco as a weight-loss program instead. “Are you getting a bit tubby? Lacking self-control?
