Heather du Plessis-Allan shows Metiria there’s no such thing as sisterhood
The great question in NZ political media next to ‘why do so many people think such a mediocre talent like Tim Watkin is a genius’, is, ‘how does Heather du Plessis-Allan keep getting work’. I’ve never rated her journalism or her opinion and this weeks column doesn’t help contradict those impressions.
Proving that there’s no such thing as a sisterhood and that she can be just as privileged and smug as her rich white male fellow broadcasters, du Pleases-Allan lashes out at Metiria for the following crime…
Instead of being a champion for beneficiaries, Turei has actually done a lot of harm to them. It wasn’t so much her admission of benefit fraud that caused the damage. It was her smug attitude. It was her refusal to apologise. It was her sense of entitlement.
…Metiria’s crime was not that she had told the truth about needing to game the draconian neoliberal welfare system, but that she had the audacity to tell her story with her chin up in defiance at the injustice of that system rather than the self-shaming we all demand from anything that is attached to the virgin sacrificing sacredness of ‘taxpayer money’.
In NZ we accept the dignity of the broken, but never the dignity of the resistant.
Muddle Nu Zilind likes their Maoris telling Billy T James style jokes, they don’t like them righteous against injustice.
du Plessis-Allan manages to go beyond hating on uppity Maoris, she also washes away an entire nations bigotry against beneficiaries by blaming Metiria for not being contrite enough…

She may believe she has started a debate about poverty in New Zealand, but it’s more likely she has driven people further towards the views they already loosely held.
…it’s like blaming the South African Apartheid state on Nelson Mandela because he stayed in prison for so long.
The delusional, moralistic, faux outrage of the mainstream media who have attacked Metiria did so because they were in a state of fear. Over the last 30 years since the neoliberal revolution, Corporate media have led the charge to convince the poor and beneficiaries that they have no voice, no power and no muscle at the ballot box. Metiria risked awakening that vote the corporate media have worked so hard to marginalise and disenfranchise and that was never going to be allowed to happen.
I’m not saying the management behind the Greens strategy wasn’t poorly gamed out, but the courage Metiria showed deserved far more than what du Plessis-Allan and her ilk meted out.
Yes MT did show her true humanity here and I am a it sad that even at the
“re-branding today it was as if we are the only ones that still hold a candle for her.
Since parliament closes this week for the election we need to set our goal to rid this evil administration from our country and send them away with shame upon them for allowing homelessness, begging and poverty to now reign over our lives!!
And NATZ want us to ignore it all, while this Government carry on as if the bloody sun shines out of their arse!!!!!

I liked it when you misspelt her name as Du Pleases Allen. I think that sums up her position as a Journalist – she pleases her right-wing bosses.

– was driven not by Ms Turei, but by the Media Elite who created the narrative of “her smug attitude. It was her refusal to apologise. It was her sense of entitlement”.
By creating and repeating that narrative by the media commentators, of course that’s the “confirmed prejudices up and down this country” that took hold.

We have had spin, vindictiveness, and moral judgentalism by the truckload from the Media Elite.
For them to then blame Ms Turei is just a bit too much to swallow.
I understand why Trump’s supporters voted for him and dismissed the msm. In their minds, the msm did not speak for them; their lives; their struggles. The msm was smug in it’s arrogance and nothing more than a tool of The Established Order of Things.
I see no difference here in New Zealand, though thank fully we have no equivalent of that orange-skinned fool in the While House.

This is what drives these neo liberal apologists / propagandists.
In a nutshell.
They derive their confidence in the fact that New Zealanders are hard out working , divided and have a fear based out of survival .
New Zealanders are generally tired when they get home , making dinner to feed the family , putting young children to bed etc… and only have snapshots in time to briefly take in the headlines and rely on intuitive assumptions instead of measured analysis.
The neo liberal advisers and their front people the politicians know this.
It is a potent weapon.
To divide people and instill a sense of fake moral outrage.
The truth is , poorer family’s are just like them , struggling to make it happen , to get ahead, to see their children succeed, to stay afloat. The difference perhaps, is that a poorer family struggles that much harder, the stress levels are that much intense…
du Plessis-Allan is married to Barry Soper, … who is , in general , … a pro neo liberal apologist. A house divided against itself will fall.

What does this mean ?
It means that as like attracts like , Soper and du Plessis- Allan will almost certainly act in unison. It will come through in the company they share, the narratives they propagate , and ultimately , in that age old need to ensure survival.

But it does not have to be this way.
It was never this way pre 1984.
Then we had an equitable society. A prosperous society. A social democratic society. A Keynesian economy based society. There was plenty. We were the global ideal. Our poorest were no less than our richest. We all had a part to play.

Anointed, establishment pundits like Du Plessis-Alan, Hosking, Gower, et al. All well rewarded, they know which side their bread is buttered on. Because of this they are quick to round like a pack of hounds on any politician who dares break ranks with the establishment consensus, on welfare and poverty, who dares to speak out against injustice and the hard decisions that the poor are forced to make.
Woe betide anyone, who this pack of well rewarded baying hounds scent, is not showing the correct level of gratitude and tugging of forelocks before the neo-liberal elite that they themselves slaver and faun to, and who they demand that we should do so as well, OR Else.
