ACT candidate resigns after Chinese political group link revealed
An ACT candidate has withdrawn from a new Wellington electorate race at November’s election, after failing to declare her previous membership of a Chinese political group linked to the country’s ruling communist party.
After The Post sent questions about Lyra Yan Zhang’s background on Monday, the party confirmed on Tuesday the Kenepuru candidate had resigned – a week after her unveiling.

Beijing has every right to look after its own interests. Our politicians should be looking after ours.
If political parties can’t manage a decent vetting process, perhaps the voters should do it for them.
Now imagine the furore from Seymour had any Left party found themselves with a fully fledged Communist-linked candidate in their midst! It’s difficult to imagine there is anyone out there, with so little up top, still prepared to vote for this Atlas puppet. Every day now, the Right are showing their true colours. Surely, voters are beginning to see that to survive as a nation, we all need to be in the mix and treated fairly. When your main God is money, you have clearly missed the boat. We need people in all walks of life to keep our country chugging along. Money does not define a man. Character, respect and kindness determine a person’s true worth. Wealth simply shows who someone already is. There is more than enough to go around comfortably – how about more of you try a lot harder. Having starving, people, including children and the elderly, living on the streets without the basics, is not a good look for any country. Try SHARING – it feels good!

Also, as UR says why can’t they manage a better vetting system. Why are crooks and liars acceptable as candidates. Further to that, why are completely unqualified people chosen as ministers. We do know why, because they have accepted such trash as candidates.
What do you have to be, to be acceptable to Peters, Luxon, Seymour and their party hierarchies? Main qualifications seems to be smug miserliness and then being a bully. Then being deaf and also having not a shred of a scruple or conscience.
Finally, a certain dumbness that only comes from having it too easy in life. Don’t give me the sob stories about various motherless MPs. Somehow, they all turned into cold, heartless robots. There was definitely something missing in their up-bringing.
