National threw pay parity women under the bus to save their last budget, now cutting 8,700 more public servants to save this budget

After gutting pay equity protections for women workers to balance one Budget, Nicola Willis is now preparing to slash another 8,700 public sector jobs to balance the next — doubling down on an austerity agenda critics say is hollowing out the very capacity of the New Zealand state.
Nearly 9,000 public sector jobs to go, government agencies to merge, Nicola Willis announces
The government has announced plans to slash public service jobs by about 14% over the next three years in a shake-up it says will deliver $2.4 billion of savings.
The changes announced in a pre-budget speech delivered by Finance Minister Nicola Willis on Tuesday would result in about 8,700 job losses by mid-2029.
Cutting 8,700 more jobs from the State is ideological vandalism, it’s not an actual plan!
The 30% of GDP rule for debt doesn’t take into account our aging population or the rising population.
The ideological project behind shrinking the State
The Right’s never-ending march to amputate and slice down the State is so that the people don’t get used to a well functioning public service and so will politically agree to starve it of funds via tax cuts.
Global free market capitalism is dead, hyper regionalism is here. We need a bigger State with actual capacity rather than the threadbare barely regulated joke that it currently is.
We shouldn’t agree to cutting public services, we should fund their capacity and infrastructure rebuild while making the working conditions for those there a better quality!
Where should we get that money? Windfall taxes on the corporations and banks!
We need better conditions for those workers and the values of working 4-day weeks, extra holidays and housing solutions are aimed at making better working conditions as opposed to never ending inflationary wage pressures.
We need a sustainable bureaucracy rather than 7-figure technocrats who see their own fiefdoms and glass palaces as the measure of public policy achievements.
The 40 year neoliberal experiment in NZ cut the State back to the bone and the political project of the Right ever since is to tax-cut starve off revenue for the State so it can’t redistribute it in the first place.
This is the worst possible moment to weaken public capacity
With the economic recession, the geopolitical shockwaves and catastrophic climate change upon us, we must have a debate about the capacity of the State!
We need more doctors, more nurses, more teachers, more police, more state houses, more infrastructure NOT LESS!
We don’t have the capacity to create a functioning State that lives up to our expectations in a liberal progressive democracy because we won’t tax the rich to fund that infrastructure!

A lot of whinging going on here. Two things from me:
1. Public servants…really? Those burocrats only serve themselves and their regular salary increases. They don’t have to shut down their business, or ever put their nuts on the block or hock their house to survive. They sit there with their clipboards and say Computer says no.
2. Labour and Jacinda and Chippie should held to account for adding 16000 of them to the payroll. That’s 16000 expensive votes for Labour, paid for by us. That much stress on the taxpayer, I’d call that economic vandalism.
This is just going from bad to worse….Nikki – no- boats is an absolute disaster…just not capable of critical thinking at any level…let alone the level required to be a Minister of Finance…
If Luxon wanted to demonstrate his ‘CEO of N.Z.’ prowess he should have fired 2 years ago when it was clear that she wasn’t up to the task..
In fact the warning bells were ringing in the build up to the last election when she demonstrated complete financial ignorance and naivety during the finance leaders debate in Queenstown.
Luxon’s indecisiveness has now got him, and of course N.Z., both a headless chicken finance minister and a goofball gaslighting assistant in Seymour.
Hopelessly out of their depth… spraying money around like confetti to real estate people , cigarette companies and middleclass netflix watchers while firing our best and brightest …this is Trump economics 101…
A loser’s strategy by a pack of floundering egomaniac losers.
N.Z. is screwed for a very long time and it’s little to do with the current oil crisis…though that will be the excuse!
To me, the unions are too silent on this. Time for a general strike.
These useless pricks don’t even know the difference between digitisation and digitalisation. Which proves they have no idea what they’re talking about.
And if you don’t know the difference, then you should keep your ignorant mouth shut until you do learn the difference.
Also, imagine holding a BA w honours in English Lit and admitting you use AI to improve your spelling and grammar! I guess Daddys money can’t buy you everything.
That’s our Finance Minister, the brainless cunt, admitting she doesn’t care about improving herself and would rather take a chance on a machine making her look like an even greater fool.
I guess she’s used to buying things to improve herself rather than working to improve herself.
Like buying weight loss drugs instead of using discipline and exercise.
Lazy, stupid and corrupt. A perfect representation of this Coalition of Cunts.
Willis is competing with Ruth to see who was the meanest in their time in government .
It’s not only mean but also sheer stupidity…these are stupid stupid ignorant unworldly people…really dumb.
who wants to pay for all these Wellington bureaucrats to sit and eat their lunches and have fake meetings- This is good and the govt have confirmed they are not targeting the front lines.
Wish they did this sooner.
Oh look, trite decades old talking points recycled by someone without the intelligence or ability to work in the public service.
Just like Willis and co, you are completely fucking ignorant on the topic.
Maybe sit this one out and go and learn something, you’ll suffer less embarrassment in the future.
What would Maninblack know, those five decades in the public service were the best years of your life.
Anyone can claim to have worked anywhere when they don’t provide evidence Ada.
Did I tell you about my work as an astronaut and a professor of philosophy?
See how hard that was…
The best way, and I mean it, the best way to save the budget would be to take the entire national party and its wart-like appendages i.e act ( A little bit of sick ) and nz first ( Yep. More sick ) then go and hire a large bus and load it up with fat rich people then throw those natzo’s, act and nz first fuckers under it.
Hardship on a beautiful country 29 thousand sq km larger than the uk who’s expertise is in food and wool production which is sold then shipped to the northern hemisphere winter consumers, a country that also sports 14 multi-billionaires, 3118 multi-millionaires and made four banksters the second most profitable in the world, second only to Canada isn’t broke. IT’S CORRUPT ! ShalI I write that again? For you poor wee Mizzims who’re just that wee bit slow, you poor liddle lambs… aye? Awww… Bless. Our AO/NZ’s CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! IT’S CORRUPT ! For Christs sake! STOP trying to analise the political logical fallacies tailor made to transmit parasitic lies to you and let common sense be you guide instead. Go on! Give it a go.
Our economy’s been, and is being, stolen by crooks. Our politic is corrupted. Our lives are being wasted and all by a small hive of faker-makers who must now try and keep the lid on The Great Aotearoa / New Zealand Institutionalised Lie!
I expect that any employer would consider the future of any employees who do not achieve anything for the amount paid to them however deciding that they only want a certain number of employees without considering the work they do is daft. Willis should be the first one dismissed as she has consistently made the economy worse in her time in office along with ending what would have been a reliable world leading inter island shipping service.
You can fail all day long in government, and you’re good for at least three years, possibly six depending on how adept you are at disguising your failure.
Willis blew a big hole in the nation’s piggy bank by giving handouts to landlords and tobacco companies, and she’s been trying to bog the gaping wound ever since, usually by sacking people, clawing back money from social policies, and cancelling anything that doesn’t negatively impact National’s donor base. And listening to MPs talking about the alleged productivity and cost savings miracle of AI, it’s clear most of them don’t have the vaguest clue how any of it actually works.
“So, how will AI specifically help with your portfolio?”
“Uh… something something efficiencies… something something value for money… something something I don’t fucking know, stop asking me difficult questions…”
Meanwhile, public servants in Wellington are bracing to be punched in the face yet again by a government who are hell-bent on making an already dire situation worse.
They’ll find out when Chippie gets in and replaces HM’s loyal opposition with AI
The economy rebounded on this announcement.Yeah right!
The Auckland and Wellington economies have been in recession for two and a half years so National continue their economic plan for growth, growth, growth. Thats unemployment growth, business liqidation growth, homelessness growth.
All indicators were pointing to a successful recovery until the World was hit with the oil crisis .If Labour were in charge we would be working with rationing and travel control instead of the calm approach of the Coalition
“All indicators were pointing to a successful recovery…”
after 2.5 years of recession, still just ‘pointing’, lol. not actual

And their next move – destroy 10,000 well-paid jobs.
You wouldn’t want to be a cafe or restaurant owner in Wellington.
Another load of shit from you Trev .the economy was not recovering and your shit mates are now learning that inflation is caused by importing oil from rich countries instead of investing in renewables .How about willis growing some balls and telling the companies that have approved permits for wind farms on the west coast between Raglan and Port Waikato to build them now or hand over the permit .Some of these were permeted 10 years ago with great fanfare followed by nothing happening .
Lord Trevor the Credulous of Moa Point is having a reckon.
And just like all his other reckons, they’re completely wrong.
“Successful recovery”… Tanking Crown revenue, increasing capital outflows and achieving credit rating downgrades.
What a fucking success!
Where is your evidence for your claims about Labour Trev? Oh that’s right, you’re a gullible fool who believes everything you read on Facebook.
You’re right this time Trev. Phase one of our calm governments fuel crises plan is to do nothing. Phase two is to make doing nothing a priority Three is to expedite doing nothing and Four is to form a commission to investigate the procedures for doing nothing.
Oil is as plentiful as it has ever been so why is Hipkins jumping up and down about wanting a plan on rationing .
Anyone can claim to have worked anywhere when they don’t provide evidence Ada.
Did I tell you about my work as an astronaut and a professor of philosophy?
See how hard that was…
Where is your evidence for your claims Hipkins and Labour want rationing Trevor?
Sounds like lies Trevor, complete lies.
That’s all your good for, repeating obvious lies that make it obvious you’re an ignorant tool.
So unless you can provide some evidence, withdraw and apologise.
But you won’t, because you’re a lying child. The perfect National voter.
Absolute bullshit Trevor. We weren’t on track at all and you know it.
The public sector cuts are just as much a factor of Nicola Willis’ numbers not adding up the better part of three years ago, as most conservative economists pointed out. All this rubbish about National being better managers of the economy has been laid bare. They never should have given a tax cut at all, and would not have if they were acting in the interests of the majority. The ratings agencies are saying we don’t pay down debt as fast as we used. Maybe don’t borrow more while cutting your ability to service the debt!
By the way it was the coalition government that scrapped the extra capacity at Marsden Point.
