  1. Great article, Seeby, and a must read. Far too many continuing to blame the Labour government for the closing of this refinery; they were simply the government at the time. Z Energy, BP and Mobil boardrooms made the decision! With our current crisis, crude oil would still have had to be shipped and processed so having our own refinery would not have made any difference! This brings us on to the CoC’s, again short-sighted, ill thought-out LNG policy which needs to be stopped NOW! The drawbacks to this are – *high costs; *increased emissions; *risks to energy independence. It is described as a “white elephant” and so very typical of this brainless CoC who never investigate a proposed policy thoroughly, hence the ensuing chaos.

You would expect any govt to ensure strategic infrastructure is maintained however the Greens were part of that government and they wanted no more oil and gas drilling and no more refinery. The Greens view is workers paying $3 a litre and oil shock inflation seeping into every consumer item is a good thing. Seems like their world view is everyone on a bike and in poverty like in maoist china.

    2. Labour when in control were happy to tell us the size of showerheads and light bulbs increase wages by an unecomnomic amount double sick leave ,drop speed limits introduce the speed bumps and the need for hundreds of road cones but no control of the petrol companies because with the Greens they hate cars roads and fossil fuel

  2. Take the disaster scenario one step further. Instead of a minor blip in the strait there is a major event and no more ships are heading our way. Doesn’t really matter if we have 50 days or 150 days supply in storage. We need to be ready with alternatives

    1. what alternatives? there are no alternatives to fossil fuels. Electricity has a place but is a poor substitute and will not scale to what FF provide. We need to work out how to do less with less. a population plan should be the first cab off the rank.
