  1. “may affect lower-income commuters,” certainly “may”, especially when there are no reasonable public transport options available.

It really says something about NZ media that not one outlet has covered what a woeful failure the train->bus replacements Auckland Transport has been running for the last three weeks have been (as usual).

  2. How can anyone put a value on slow traffic .If it takes me an hour to get to work that means I leave an hour before I need to start work .If it suddenly took 45 mins I would leave home 15 minutes later .I would still be doing my 8 hours of productivity and leave work at the same time each day .Because my travel time is reduced by 15 mis each wat does not mean I am going to work another 30 mins for free does it .
Travel time to and from the job is paid by me not my employer so will be a fixed cost for me and will not change .
As a second thought to all these road taxes being introduced ,those bike lanes you all whinge about might be looking good right now .Now there is a massive payoff for NZ because of the reduced fuel used ,reduced green house gasses .and vast improvement in the health of the workforce .Suddenly I would be saving hundreds of dollars a week on car running costs and parking .My health would improve because instead of my arse getting bigger from sitting all day I would be lean and mean with cash to spare .

  3. Free roads for free people in a free country.

The Act types will be dead set against any new tax, right?

  4. ‘The Act types will be dead set against any new tax, right?’
That will depend on the amount of donations from contractors building and operating toll roads.

  5. Taking a hundred dollars a week off workers for their travels could result in driving us into recession

  6. The general public may be being ambushed by this but it’s misleading to insinuate that they are consenting.

  7. If it happens in Auckland, this famous congestion charge, it will soon be started everywhere. It’ll catch everyone.
Whatever payment arrangements they introduce will be in council’s favour and be made hard to do esp. for silly oldies like me who aren’t tech-savvy. The central city cuts it’s own throat at that point because we are the only ones with a bit of money to spend.
If they make going into the CBD even less attractive, we won’t go. Simple.

CBDs have struggled to be the places to shop ever since the arrival of malls. To be honest I cannot think of anything I want to buy in a mall. The only shop I really want to go to at the moment, is on the other side of town, so I guess I’ll do without until I happen to be passing.
Or wait till I’m in a small rural town where I’ll probably find exactly what I want in their fabulous family outfitters and be able to park right outside the door.
I could be spending thousands but you have to make it easy for me, OK?

  8. Pay to play society for lords and barons. All you peasants can ride a bicycle to the work house.
