Shane Jones wants to stop the public from viewing footage from commercial fishing boats
Minister for Oceans and Fisheries Shane Jones is proposing to let fishing boats with cameras or observers dump unwanted catch at sea, as part of wider reforms he says will “boost the productivity, boost the jobs, and create more export income”.
…it gets worse, not only does he want to dump the environmental protections placed to monitor unwanted catch, he also wants to censor the public from ever seeing what the fishing industry is doing…
Jones also vowed to push on with efforts to stop the public from being able to view footage from on-board cameras, which can now be obtained through the official information act. He campaigned on removing cameras from the vessels.
…why is the privacy of fish more important than the public being aware that fisheries are being plundered?
You all get this reeks of open graft right?
How on earth can a Politician as compromised as Shane Jones lead the policy to deregulate an industry he receives so much donation from?

NZ First has been in with fishing industry tops since its formation, with numerous examples of donations for favourable legislative treatment-including gruesome Talleys.
Fishing exploits workers, environment and drives species to extinction. There have to be better sources of protein than going for 80 year old Orange Roughy. Fish was a healthy option, but not so much now, there are a lot more poor quality and diseased catches.
Jones wants a “I see nothink” regime for the fishing corporates and smaller operators too-so stuff him-keep the cams and public access.
MAF has enough greenies in it that things would probably leak anyway, so the OIA blocking is just a smokescreen.
This disgusting fat c**t just wants (because he’s been paid to do so) to eliminate any incentive to avoid catching bycatch.

Exports of finfish for the 11 months to Nov 2024, 1.033 billion for 167,363 tonnes.
That’s just over $6 per kg.
Some years ago Seafood NZ proudly proclaimed they received 86 cents export revenue for every fish meal.
Exporting finfish is obviously a waste of money and should be banned. The revenue generated does not cover the environmental destruction inflicted, and so we the taxpayer are paying for it to be heavily subsidised.
So they can do what the public wants, until they learn to stand on their own 2 feet and pay their way.
Be fair, the Fishing industry gives him money so he does what it tells him to.
He is not completely without principles.
Of course taxpayers and voters pay his parliamentary salary so he could look after their interests as well.
But there are limits, in his sexual fantasy all of us are fucked by him.
