I have often thought that if an entity has a long-used English name, that should come first then the Maori name. If it is a town or city etc then the Maori name if it has precedence in time, should come first. But services etc should have English first. Hospitals and roads.
As I have said putting Maori names first gives the negative impression that any problems are caused by it being run by Maori. It also is confusing to have a different name plonked on something in an effort to indicate that Maori is the leading language. It is a two-language system but let’s not lose our bearings and understanding of where we are now.
Place names like Wellington, Auckland, are the names of toffs in Brit maybe we should be using their Maori name and not the colonial Brit one. Do the toffs care, do we about them? But I do care about Maori and want to have an interactive relationship, enjoying both cultures in a relaxed way.
Why does it take almost annihilation of a country for people to appreciate how great the humans there are. We cannot afford wars and antipathy killing off people who might through their thinking and living show how to save man and womankind.
