I think that this is the sort of inquiry which this country conducted into the atrocities committed by the SAS in Afghanistan, and especially about the night raids personally ok’d by John Key, while Mataparae watched in real time, and Mapp, also up in Kabul, went to bed. That was the dark night 21 civilians, mainly subsistence villager women and children, were killed or maimed and wounded. I seem to recall that Mataparae subsequently got a knighthood and a plum diplomatic posting.
The Afghanistan Commission of Inquiry was triggered by Hager/Stephenson’s “ Hit&Run”. All Hager’s work is meticulously researched and referenced, but even so, incredibly, National’s Bill English glibly tried to dismiss it as untrue and popped up to Auckland to attend a pop concert, while decent people, and people with integrity, remained shamed and shocked. Bill English, who tried to engineer a low wage economy, and a privatised health service, paid for by persons deliberately kept poor. Bill, who electioneered saying that he knew what it was like to be different because he had teenage acne. That Bill.
The UK is currently investigating the illegal activities of its own special forces in Afghanistan, but it is doing so in the law courts, not with a Commission of Inquiry, and that is probably the process which this country should have followed too. I think the New Zealand Afghanistan inquiry was headed by Geoffrey Palmer, who possibly wrongly, I thought a reasonable choice at that time; whether this is an efficient tool to address the inadequacies of our political circus is a moot point.

Gee Trevor is that the best you have got if there is going to be another war, we would not want someone as weak and inexperienced as Luxon in charge he can’t even face up to a debate and he agrees with everyone and changes his mind often.
There is going to be another war, a terrible Middle East war, and apart from we not getting involved, the impact will have global ramifications. At this stage it is not helpful for a Green co-leader to publicly assert that the Israeli Defence Force should be classified as a terrorist organisation. Luxon’s by no means the only political leader to be concerned about.
