Joy as border to reopen but with a warning of high case numbers

After nearly 700 days and more than 220,000 travellers passing through its doors, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says it’s the beginning of the end for our MIQ system.

A phased reopening of the border introducing self-isolation for arrivals would start from February 28, first with vaccinated Kiwis coming from Australia and critical workers, Ardern said yesterday.

Two weeks later Kiwis from the rest of the world could arrive MIQ-free, followed by other travellers in phases from July through October.

The globalists at Stuff have won with their never ending sob stories to ensure their own global skill set can always travel.

The hyper tourism market that exist to sell red bull to tourists are laughing.

The industries that benefit from migrant worker exploitation laugh.

National Party candidate and ZB host in training Charlotte Bellis is laughing.

All those kiwis stupid enough to travel during a pandemic are gleeful.

The international student scam are dancing with joy.

Welcome back exploited migrant workers and Students and tourists who will block our public transport, who will place rent pressures on domestic renters, who will crowd our groaning infrastructure!

Expect house prices to explode.

Weep dear Kiwi at the plague seeping in, weep at our Fortress NZ protection ripped away from us at a time when external shockwaves become the norm, weep that our quality of life plunges again.

Weep of course right up until the next variant gets loose or we lose control of Omicron and then the public will be screaming to shut MIQ.

  1. Touch of hyperbole here bomber. The 1 million kiwis currently overseas have just as many rights as you do and the longer we prevent them coming back to see their children, visit their parents before they die etc the worse NZ looks. ‘Temporarily’ suppressing the human rights of some to achieve a policy outcome is something NZ criticises other countries for, especially when the policy outcome will inevitably fail.

    • Where did you get the million kiwis overseas figure? I’ve noticed this figure being bandied around a lot lately particularly by right wing critics of the government and MIQ. If I remember the PM used that figure two years ago when briefing the Nation. Since then around 220k people have passed through MIQ. Even with my School C arithmetic I can see that doesn’t add up to a million kiwis overseas at this time. I’m equally bemused by the number of returnees desperately seeking to visit their families and dying relatives testing omicron positive on day one of MIQ. Those toilet seats on the plane. However, one has to marvel at the nobleness of spirit in seeking to give the said dying rellies a healthy dose of the omicron experience before they shuffle off.

  2. Yesterday, following the PM’s announcement will be forever known as “AO/NZ surrender day”.

NZ is officially “A Tale of Two cities”. The NZ ruling class, finance capital, petit bourgeoisie and Natzo media have finally pressured the Labour Caucus strongly enough to abandon its brave Public Health before Private Property stance.

Who will cop it most now? The people that did not whinge every morning, screaming for “certainty” that’s right, the underclass and working class that have to live with crap internet, overcrowding, and public transport and precarious incomes.

The arseholes that put the heat on Jacinda and the rest can isolate, have full pantrys and home offices and Capital Gains–sod ’em and the Audi they rode in on!

  3. Finally we can see a light at the end of the tunnel and plans can be made to make money instead of just printing it and pretending we are doing well.
Let’s hope that this revival is done with a plan to build better . Less freedom campers more control greener travellers and oversight of hiring to stop poor employment practics.
Welcome home all those been denied entry for so long

  4. Martyn
To add to all your woes, did you listen to the Hipkins this morning? That should give you extreme confidence that all well-planned and totally under control….not.

  5. We could be twins @ MB.
The political psychopathic narcissists who proclaim control and management over us and our AO/NZ are preparing to throw us under a bus load of millionaires and billionaires who want to stay that way.
God help those in impoverished neighborhoods in the larger cities.
We had it all and they threw it away. We were covid free and our real and true agrarian economy was performing well, in fact better than expected, and They’ve just shit all over those elements of our good fortune.
Jonky and his toy boys and bob tail bimbos will suckle up and snuggle down to feast on our misery.
I’ve written before that national and labour are one and the same thing and will continue to be so while our democracy remains capitalist. Aye boys?
    The Guardian.
“Portugal general election: Socialists win surprise outright majority”
“The result, boosted by a higher than expected turnout despite the coronavirus pandemic, came as a surprise after the Socialists had lost most of their advantage in recent opinion polls. It means Portugal will have a stable government to oversee the application of EU pandemic recovery funds.”

As opposed to Portugal’s version of the deviant Natzo party here.
CHEGA!; lit. ’Enough’) is a national conservative, right-wing populist political party in Portugal formed in 2019 by André Ventura.
Chega considers itself a party with nationalist,[15] conservative and personalist roots.[16] It defends the promotion of an effective judicial system and the decrease of the State’s intervention in the economy. The party also presents itself as national conservative and social conservative.[17]

  6. House prices have already exploded well the doors were shut. We need some extra labour from overseas to build more to help stabilize the cost of construction.

    • HOW ABOUT SOME REAL SOCIAL HOUSING PROJECTS with training kiwi workers as part of the contract, then these trained workers could increasingly be fed into the sector they would have long term stable jobs in ongoing social housing/infrastructure projects?…..
all we need is the will to do it and oh something like oh I dunno a public works dept, that actually trains and employs uhhhh….kiwis

a quick fix of cheap foreign labour will just kick the can down the road and not improve things one iota not even a smidgen….though I can see the attraction for corrupt developers and fly by night ‘sunset clause’ builders.

        • oh really oh reilly wake up and smell the fuckin roses..people live in cars as ‘lifestyle choice’ do they?

and if you think benefits are a viable option for any kind of life you haven’t been outside for about 20yrs….what some do is learn from their tax dodging ‘betters’ and do a bit of ‘cash in hand’

          • his comment is like a rich person telling a poor person they have enough.
Guess he wasnt aware that 20 bucks given to beneficiaries was then taken out of the likes of the accomodation supplement so it might have looked good on paper and let the govt justify not doing anything else but in reality it was all smoke and mirrors and still the same level of extreme poverty all while not charging enough taxation to cover all this, yet now they want to introduce a tax for the working class benefit scheme.

  7. Got a decent case of Stockholm Syndrome there Bomber. And I think you might have missed the fact that house prices have more than exploded over the last two years.

  8. The policy outcomes are about saving NZers lives Average Joe yes those who live overseas have rights but unlike us they don’t live here, they chose to live somewhere else and we have a right to be safe and protect eh majority. Australia locked their citizens out also. In NZ the policy has not failed as we have one of the lowest death rates.

  9. Foreseeably, the first problem is that the self-entitled who have helped force the doors open will pour in bringing untold Covid variants with them by evading all responsibility for complying with the rules. Having done that, will they adhere to the self-isolation rules? Why? They know that they will never pay any fines that may be imposed as there are no other sanctions, and will fuck off again at will to their well-paid jobs. In the meantime, the already over-taxed poor will pay for their self-entitlement, both financially and by having the health system overloaded so they can’t receive essential medical care when it is most needed.

  10. That’s enough shrill nationalism thanks. “our quality of life” depends entirely on where you’re sitting in the boat.

  11. When the shit really hits the fan Ardern will get the blame. The Govt will do what the Nats and Seymour wanted to do in 2019 and 2020 and any dire consequences will be claimed by those opposition parties? Yeah right.

  12. Weep you say?

How about rejoice that the authoritarian lunatics who been running NZ into the ground are finally being beaten back and look to have been broken.

The months and years ahead will be hard but at least we can start to reclaim our freedoms

      • Okay, let me try to answer this one.

How about the freedom for citizens to return freely to their country?
How about the freedom of association especially for those who hold faith
How about the freedom to choose who we interact with, when we want and where we want
How about the freedom to leave our fucking houses let alone cities

Honestly, I don’t care if you’re of the left or the right it’s plain to see that NZ has endured some of the harshest and cruelest restrictions and for what? $60 billion in debt, thousands of missed medical diagnoses, mental health disasters of a scale never seen before and house price inflation that will see an entire generation locked out of home ownership. That’s just the start.

But that’s okay, you didn’t notice your freedoms being taken away

        • What a load of old cobblers. This country had six years of restrictions and loss of freedom during WW2. Rationing, conscription of able bodied young men, thousands and thousands of lives lost. Death Columns in local newspapers which ran to pages long. Shortages of everything including food, meat and wool which went to UK, the people were left with the scrags to live on. Get a life Yeti, yes its been hard but hell’s teeth its only been two and a bit years. Struth you need to read a bit of history and learn from it.

    • How about rejoice that the authoritarian lunatics who been running NZ into the ground are finally being beaten back and look to have been broken…

that’s not a very nice way to talk about the nats yeti, I’m disappointed.

  13. How hard is this? We have MIQ because our health system could hardly deal with an outbreak of head lice. Our ICU is literally on par with Mexico, it’s that 3rd world.

Of course no Minister in this government will admit that outright because they were all too thick to upgrade it after March 2020 and in fact allowed it to decline further. But it’s not hard to work out that is why MIQ still exists.

But kudos to Charlotte Bellis, et al and the National Party. You are getting what you wanted!

    • Can anyone remember what Andrew Little looks like? I mean isn’t he the health minister? Talk about MIA, or is her too busy pushing through the major health reforms… During a pandemic!!!

  14. Too true Martyn. But, the weasel Stuff factory over dramatised it and I quess lost some street cred. Low wage and an elite rich needs to be crushed. I’d lead the charge but I’m too well off to get off my arse.

  15. Yes the house price explosion will continue.
Weren’t labour as one of their election promises going to fix that?
They screamed and yelled and here we are two elections later and it’s the worst in our history.
    Blunder after blunder.

  16. Who in their right mind would want to live in a country with 5 million bitter twisted selfish frightened jealous angry kiwis? Not only that but to live in this closed environment you have to pay the highest rents to these nasty pricks and pay most for fuel and food in the OECD. No thanks, Oz is far superior and not people are truly happy, not fake smiley Jacinda happy.

  17. Maybe I am cynical but I think the Roy Morgan poll had as much to do with this decision (or perhaps just the timescales) as Charlotte and her Stuff cronies and the wonderful “Open the Border Now” Natso movement.

Which sounds awfully like what Judith Collins had been saying for the past year, definitely not the same old stale National party at all!!

  18. The Tories and act and their msm supporters havent got a thing right since the start of the pandemic. Labour and Jacinda with good scientific advice have ignored uninformed comments from natzact and have been successful. 54 deaths from covid (may go up to 500 now) whereas if natzact were coalescing in govt there would be 10,000 at least. The governments job is to protect and save its citizens from foreign invasion. Covid is the enemy, it invisible, they didnt swim over, they arrived with foreigners and while all governments around the world failed dismally and beaten by the enemy we in Aotearoa smashed them. The enemy now have ramped up after smashing every other country around the world.
What I can see now is that when the numbers are up and deaths rise most kiwis will bunker down and Business especially entertainment wont have customers and will be moaning again.
Seymore is irrelevant and of no consequence. His party is like a hillbilly southern USA state with a few disillusioned Maori , gun-touting folk and angry old men. He’s trying to win the racist vote from natz especially the grumpy old men you read on TDB and KB and granny herald and hear on ZB talkback.
But us grumpy old men are dying out so welcome the young green voter anti conservative voter.

  19. It’s becoming a cold, this is the last episode of the covid crisis: not overloading the hospitals and endangering Maori are our last priorities. And 2 or 3 months on it’s all over.

Don’t like the media covid congestion. Somewhat because of the numpties needing to be dissuaded from their feeds from the Fascist American Right. In the old days of strong democracy we’d have left it to the Min of Health and got on to more important matters. We die soon by climate change and we fiddle with our privilege. Any non-idiot knows this is everything. We still fiddle, infuriatingly, and seem to think it’s our right — right, or some such shit. We know!!! Magical thinking, on the level of astrology, of religion, dominates politics. I have to say I’m for anyone who addresses reality seriously and the post-1984 agreed upon definition of the limit of democracy being what ‘can’ be done rather than what ‘needs’ to be done. Which in effect disallows pushing the possible for all intents and purposes. Down to Helen Clark. In effect snags all possibilities in focus groups and the leaders lack of heart and ability to talk.

  20. Don’t fool yourselves. Labour has a majority, nothing happens unless they want it to. To blame others for effectively letting omicron rip, is the excuse of a partisan fool. Labour owns this decision.

  21. Weep while we follow Chris Trotters advice and buy govt to govt negotiations to specify for NZ conditions and quality control as we buy kitset homes for $15,000 from China and solve our housing crisis , develop our own exclusive foreign policy and give the middle finger to the 5 eyes and develop our armed forces to be the Switzerland of the South Pacific,… got any probs so far? And if you are railing on behalf of the middle class property portfolio holders?, – that’s not your usual M.O.

So who cares if this resets the economic setting of the property speculators and the Australian banks who charge interest outside of NZ wage conditions? Who cares if this upsets the middle class block the neo liberals are always chasing after to retain their cushy jobs? Who cares if this resets the housing industry back to realistic economic land and housing settings? You see we have lost sight of the old measure of the Consumer Price Index,… a former time when our politicians and civil servants didn’t see opportunity’s to cash in on our fellow New Zealanders…

I know you are not like this M.B, yet I have said the same things as Mr Trotter for years. Perhaps the difference is I am a staunch social democratic nationalist, one with heart, one who thinks of the best interests of ALL New Zealanders,… and f@ck the Australian banks, the 5 eyes or any other curmudgeon who wants to weasel in on our quality of life and our wealth.

I say we go all out to develop an aggressive foreign trading position for our primary industry’s, develop our armed forces if need be from various county’s and preferably from across the the political spectrum and use govt subsidy’s to kick start massive home grown industry’s from fisheries to I.T componentry. And buy back our crucial assets such as power , water, logging and cease selling our land of to foreign interests. F@ck the weasels.- and lets take our lands and resources back for the people of this country. And charge the bastards 5-25 year leases to practice their industry’s on our land and demand royalties from the same.

And we do that by training our own young people for oil and LPG , logging, primary produce. fishing etc and technological goods for export.

F@ck Bill English and his Ruth Ricardson minimum wage. That was 36 years ago and a totally duplicitous scam. F@ck roger ‘scam’ douglas. F@ck all of them the treasonous shitters. Its time we grew up and stopped being mules for the 5 eyes. They never did anything good for us, lets go our own way.

  22. Onricron : more infections but less hospitalisations

nothing to worry about unless you’re chicken little

    • less hospitalisations in percentage terms but that is a percentage of a much higher figure for infections..which means possibly more hospitalisations than at a lower level of serious infection
