Medical Apartheid – New Zealand must speak out Demanding Vaccinations for Palestinians

Yesterday we appealed to the government, via Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta, to speak out and demand Israel abandon its apartheid medical practices and provide Covid 19 vaccinations for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.

There are inevitably serious divisions between countries regarding their ability to pay for coronavirus vaccines but the situation in Israel/Palestine is unique.

Israel has proudly touted itself as one of the first countries to begin widespread vaccination of its population but has specifically excluded Palestinians living under occupation in the West Bank and Gaza strip from its vaccination program.

Nine million Israelis are in line to receive the vaccination, but five million Palestinians are being excluded.

This is medical apartheid. It is racist, immoral and inhuman.

In a terrible irony, Palestinians living under Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza are refused vaccination while hundreds of thousands of Israeli settlers living in illegal settlements on Palestinian land are being vaccinated.

Under the Fourth Geneva Convention – which deals with the responsibilities of an occupying power to look after the health and well-being of occupied people – Israel is responsible for the health and well-being of Palestinians living under its military occupation. However, Israel is ignoring these legal and moral responsibilities.

As a signatory to the Fourth Geneva Convention it is New Zealand’s solemn moral and legal responsibility to speak out quickly, strongly and publicly.

        • In complete contravention of the people who live in and around Israel and on total disregard of the long term risks that may come from corona, that’s some of the reasons why people like Minto and I oppose Israeli occupation of Palestine land. And also in the interests of humanity we know Climate Change will accelerate making the need to get things fixed up between Israel and Palestine that much greater.

  4. In the interests of balance and fairness, you should also explain what actions, if any, the Palestinian Authority is taking to address the vaccination issue. Are the PA not responsible for the people they represent?

  5. Good luck with that call John. The only time NZ got upset with the antics of the Zionists was when they tried to purloin a few passports to aid Mossad’s international terror programme. Even when the National Government made a made a moral stand at the the UN with Murray McCully showing a bit of spine, the politicians ran away the moment Israel shook its US wrapped fist. All Netanyahu had to do was shriek that sponsoring the resolution condemning Israel’s Palestine settlements would be an ‘act of war’. Subsequently, Ball-less Brownlee didn’t just kick the can down the road in obeisance, he blocked his nose, picked it up with a long handled litter lifter and dropped it into a very deep hole. So far, the current government has demurred on even commenting on the most egregious violations of human rights abuses committed by the Israeli Government. Why would we expect anything more substantial than a quiet sigh and shrug of the shoulders over this later atrocity? Besides, any sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians that may spur on Namaia Mahuta to hold the Israeli Government to account will be negated by the PM. It isn’t so long ago that Ardern undid her Minister’s proposed diplomatic strategies and engagement with China by supporting the pathetic whining of ‘Scotty from Marketing’ when he was trumped by a lowly Chinese official, Lijian Zhou, who highlighted the murder of Afghanis by Australian troops. Closer to home, we also have the example of the Government’s disrespect human rights. There has been no fallout over the Waikeria 16 being deprivation of food and water, that was further exacerbated by violent Police intimidation with use of firearms.

  6. Under the Oslo Accords, the PA are responsible for their own health services. They have never requested vaccines from Israel and are apparently buying their own from Russia. The accusation that Israel is withholding vaccines from Palestinians is an evil lie. Using Evans’ disgusting cartoon as your header is very revealing of your mindset. You have already been told how the information is distorted by excluding the bulk of the Palestinians that Israel is not providing vaccine for as is required of an occupier. Article 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention specifically provides that “an occupier has the duty of ensuring the adoption and application of the prophylactic and preventive measures necessary to combat the spread of contagious diseases and epidemics”. If five million Palestinians are not vaccinated how will Israel achieve herd immunity?. A lack of rational thinking seems to haunt every step of this pandemic.

  11. NZ, like Australia, Japan and Taiwan has the luxury of waiting to see how the various vaccines perform and what the risks are. There is need to rush unless there is a serious community outbreak.

    Given the almost two millennia history of amicable relations between Arabs and Jews, one would expect the latter would be vaccinated. The more recent confounding factor is Zionism and the alienation and slow genocide of Palestinians.       Medical Apartheid relating to Covid though, that’s not true (not yet anyway). The concept itself invokes questions due to the presuppositions. I have to ask; if Israel offered mass vaccinations to Palestinians first, would these same critics accuse Israel of using Palestinians as guinea pigs?

      I think America giving Israel a-free-pass coupled with hundreds-of-billions of dollars in aid, well.. its frustrated a lot of people. Israel would of course point to their neighbor’s actions.. all parties have legitimate grievances.

  13. We know that the Israeli government and its supporters are quick to use accusations of anti-semitism to deflect criticism of their attacks on the national rights of Palestinians. They’ve been doing it for decades.

    But that doesn’t mean that anti-semitism isn’t rife, on the left as well as on the right – see the comment by “countryboy” here. More pointed is the use of the Evans cartoon, which one comment here accurately labels “disgusting “, at the head of John Minto’s article . It directly invoked the old trope of Jewish “vermin” spreading disease, which goes back to fourteenth century Europe, if not earlier, when there were widespread pogroms against Jews accused of causing the Black Death.

    To quote a chant I have heard John leading at many demonstrations, “Shame.”
