If you vote NZ First – you are voting National

On top if the devastating critique by Chris Trotter today comes the very first public manoeuvring required for NZ First and National to launch their new political romance…

NZ Election 2020: National joins New Zealand First in calling for Tiwai Point aluminium smelter to stay open

National leader Judith Collins is joining NZ First leader Winston Peters in calling for the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter near Invercargill to remain open.

…Winston and Judith get along a lot better than Winston and Jacinda do.

With Labour polling stratospherically, NZ First know they are politically irrelevant and in their desperation are preparing to jump ship to the right in some hope that could buoy their political fortunes.

It’s the same political desperation that dumped Bridges for Muller and replaced Muller for Judith.

I don’t think it’s going to save NZ First or National.

  1. Well first off Chris Trotters piece was far from devastating because he left out core historical facts. Which he was all too aware off. Secondly if we recall, it was only BECAUSE of NZ First that this Labour govt got in, in the first place.

    So there you go.

And if NZ First do go with National that’s their prerogative, – but rest assured that if they do , – there wont be a blind moment that NZ First wont keep the NATS in line.

NZ First is no friend of neo liberals either blue or red.

  2. Winston is shaky and erratic. The Labour lead coalition is in tatters. National are knifing anyone within reach. Must be election time. As usual you are correct Martyn, voting Winston First is giving one to the Natz. Shame, but old Winnie is becoming desperate as he faces his own extinction. Untrustworthy in the extreme. The Centre-Left have an enemy in Winston, again a shame because the COL wouldn’t have happened without his support so a little gratitude to the old bugger for that. But see ya later NZF.

  3. Nah Martyn,

Collins has the knack of going both ways to have “a bob each way” that’s her style, probably learned from the Chinese as she is so close to them you remind us.
So she will be seen to be romancing NZF just for show, – so don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

  4. I lost complete trust in Winston Peters when in the 90s and about 1995 he swore Black and Blue that he would not enter into a Coalition government with National.

But within days almost of the election outcome he decided to hop into bed with National.

My late parents and I voted for Winston because we thought he would keep his promise. But after he sold us out we never bothered with him ever again afterwards.

And so 25 years later I just don’t trust Winston Peters. He may be part of a more caring Coalition government but he has way passed his Used By Date when it comes to trust and being worthy of voting for.

I may respect him but I do not trust him and I think that could be the feeling of many NZers who were ‘sold down the river’ by Peters in the mid 90s.

And in regards to the Tiwai Point smelter? Well I think the NZ taxpayers have bailed out Rio Tino long enough. It’s time OUR money was spent on NZers and not on an overseas owned company.

But then it’s typical of National to have a spending spree attitude of NZ taxpayers money when it suits them. Their ability to back the wrong horses is legendary.

  5. The 2600 working for directly or indirectly are NZ citizens and it would be a better spend to keep this company going than some of the millions spent on tourist companies that will not be functioning for some time.
I hope Collins can get enough support from Act to rule out NZF if by some miricle they get back into parliment.

  6. Tiwai Point would become Xi-Wai Point under Madame, with a new super-secure prison built nearby for those who failed to bow to their new overlords.

  7. I find it difficult to understand why people want the government to throw more money at Tiwai point. This company has been sucking money from the government for many years, it’s time it was stopped. Judith Collins of course will do anything she can to oppose any labour government idea but this idea of shovelling out more money to a business that has been draining government funds for year’s just shows her ignorance on this matter. If the population had to pay for power at twice the rate of Tiwai they would be very happy because Tiwai pays so little. I realise that’s lot of people will lose their jobs and that’s very sad but really the tax payer is supporting them anyway by selling power to Tiwai for a ridiculously small amount.
