The men who kicked a Great White Shark to death in Orewa need to be identified and fined $250 000

What an ugly, ugly, ugly turn of events at Orewa…

A great white shark that died on an Auckland beach was netted on purpose and once on land repeatedly kicked, it has been claimed.

…what a pack of scumbags! Who the hell goes out of their way to torture a shark?

Stuff has received reports that a group of men “purposefully caught [the shark] in a net” and after pulling it ashore “repeatedly kicked it, damaged its jaw and took photos next to the dying animal, while laughing”.

The group became “exceptionally intimidating” when people tried to intervene, the source said.

…if these scumbags get caught we should ensure they are publicly crucified on social media, let’s see how tough they are then.

“Police and [the Department of Conservation] arrived on the scene as other beachgoers attempted to pull the shark back into the water.

“The group of men gave false details to police and joined the larger group.”

Great Whites are an endangered species and in NZ are fully protected meaning anyone caught harming one can be fined $250 000 and 6months in prison.

I tend to be someone who leans to the less punitive when it comes to punishment, but something like this requires a strong message to everyone else, purposely torture a protected  animal like this and  face a quarter of a million dollar fine plus 6 months in prison.

What a pack of spineless cowards.

  1. RNZ described this as “A Great White shark…getting caught in a fishing net”. Wow, sounds like it was the sharks fault, and about as incidental as a Sunday driver getting caught in a traffic jam. Or like when Pope Francis got snagged by that woman on walkabout. No mention by RNZ about cruelty to protected species, or Orewa romper stompers, but we do see safe journalism gently washing ashore again. Would like to have seen the shark slap back like the Pope did, in it’s own habitat after being kicked.

  2. sickening…!….would females do this?

(and I also wonder about those entitled, do- gooder middle class Greens who ENJOY trapping and killing rats…and who are advocates and enablers of spreading 1080 all over the country, killing everything in its wake, especially birds like the Kea, which is now endangered )

  3. With the risk of the person(and his mother)knowing who wrote this postiing I am going to write about I will be changing the dates.

Last year I visited a popular area of New Zealand and stayed at a friend’s place.

Also staying at the same place was a mother and son. The son is pre-teen. Both him and his mother use the F-word in normal conversation. That word is one I use only when I am angry as honestly I do not like it one bit. I cannot stand hearing a pre-teen using the word as if it’s normal. In fact it shows a poor upbringing on the part of the parent(s).

We went fishing one evening and when casting out his fishing line he caught a young seagull. I instructed him to reel the bird slowly back to shore so as to not panic it.

Once we had got the bird to shore and the hook being removed from its wing the boy said that is was ‘fucking awesome and he could use it(the bird)as live bait..” A gentlemen turned on him and said that the bird is a living creature and to respect it.

Later on I caught a small fish which I put into a bucket of salt water. As it seemed there was no more fishing I said to the young lad that we should throw the small fish back into the sea. He proceeded to torture it by squeezing it and thrusting it into my face whilst laughing the whole time. He then put a hook through its spine and used it as live bait.

I was so offended and sickened by the actions of that kid that I called him a toad.

I have a love and respect of animals, birds and sea-life. For others to treat such beautiful creatures of nature so abhorrently do not deserve any respect.

If he gets to say 17 years old he most likely will behave like those ‘diseased excuses of humanity’ on the Orewa beach.

I am hoping someone at Orewa beach took photos and a video of those baboons who tortured the shark.

But then perhaps Karmic Payback will come back and hit them. One of them may well become the dinner for a Great White Shark. Well lets hope to be honest.

    • Justme – Tough, isn’t it. We took another kid up to Arthur’s Pass for the weekend once. He pelted the keas with stones. He was my husband’s boss’s son.His dad later did something repulsive to me and his wife gets him off the hook ringing next day saying Bill couldn’t remember anything from 8.30pm onwards. I can’t believe keas are under threat. Yes I can. The shark torturers need a whopping wop on the head with a bit of 4×2, and then another – their game their rules.

    • Ummmmmm ur one of those rich people aye that grew up in the city ? , live bait fishing is a common way to fish

  4. Did those fucktards think they would receive praise by doing this? I think they may have watched too many stupid hollywood shark movies… Dumb asses.

  5. Well justme not sure what swearing and bad parenting (which does not take place in a vacuum of perfect choice). I’ve know well brought up grammar school kiddies, who don’t use the “F” word who behave in exactly this manner. I think it’s a bit unfair to blame the parents. You don’t even know who they are.

    • Actually Ernie I do know his parents. They are as bad as each other.

The father loves hitting birds with his truck. He laughs every time he hits a bird.

And so the child learns from his parents. Yes there are some kids who don’t use the F word but commit horrible things but I am this kid is heading on a bad path. Unless he realises doing bad things to living creatures isn’t on or he may well end up in prison before he is 19.

      • Oops. I noticed a grammatical mistake on my reply.

It should read: I am sure this kid is heading down a bad path……

  6. Your blog on the cruel attack on a shark saddened everyone who commented. One positive aspect of the incident were the people who tried to intervene who sound as if they were threatened by the vicious attackers. Good on them for their courage and decency.

  7. Well we live in a country where kids are taught from an early age that it’s ok to kill and torment creatures as long as someone designates them a “pest” or ” non native”. Like drowning baby possums in a barrel of water. No surprises here. You reap what you sow.

  8. Kayla , I was brought up hunting and farming killing animals is second nature to me , but there’s no way I could kill a cat or dog , I can’t even bring my self to put my tropical fish out of there misary when there sick and dying , so just coz we hunt and kill things dosnt mean we don’t have a heart or empathy , I was taught to respect all animals I hunt and to end it fast with as least pain is possible

    • Colin so do I. I am not a tree hugging vegan. I fish and dispatch my catch quickly and cleanly and treat with respect. Same with meat.
However, we are developing a “nativism” in NZ which borders on fascist. If it is labeled a pest then it is ok apparently to kill without any consideration of the things you talk about. You know what I am talking about. I am not opposed to keeping pest populations down. I shoot rabbits when they get too numerous at our golf club, but I don’t drown them in barrels. I’m referring also to the madness of dropping hundreds of tonnes of deadly poison right through our environment and normally sane and rational people applauding it and calling for more. Have you seen an animal dying from 1080 poisoning? Anyone who considers that acceptable is a sick human being. No matter which animal it is.

  9. I am thinking the very persons that kicked this poor shark to death and probably the same ones that whilst able bodied in mind and body would park in a disabled parking spot because they are too lazy to walk further than they need be.

Meaning once someone i.e a member of the public; tells them off for parking in a disabled car park they respond with aggressive behaviour and of course bullying even though they well know they are in the wrong.

I experienced this a couple of years ago in West Auckland because one couple who were able-bodied parked in a disabled car-park and when I told them they shouldn’t park there they resorted to intimidation tactics. This couple were in their 40s and should have known better but laziness was their reasoning(at a guess).

And in reply to Colin Smith. No I am not a rich person who has grown up in a city. I used to love fishing and would kill a fish in a horrendous manner. But there came a time when I looked upon the fish through a different set of eyes and feelings. I learnt to view things differently and with empathy and respect.

There are different methods to killing a living creature albeit a shark, a fish or any other creature. It’s either humanely or by torture. What that kid did in my earlier posting was pure torture and he enjoyed every bit of it. But I added in a reply to Ernie that whilst he(Ernie)says I do not know the parents of the kid well yes I do. His father deliberately hits birds with his truck and thinks it’s oh so funny.

We are all different in mind and thoughts. I will never change the attitude of that kid because it’s all up to his parents and himself(of course). But to deliberately harm a creature of nature is abhorrent to me and probably so many others. To get a laugh or a ‘buzz’ out of kicking a creature to death or putting ribbons on its wings(like what has happened in Wellington)is disgusting.

  10. The saddest thing about this is that shark is supposed too be protected by law.

Even if these wankers are arrested there is no way they will get prison time or pay a $250,000 fine because we let people like this off with a warning not too do it again.

I have said before we don’t do punishment for attacks on living creatures animal or human.

Our animal history with animal welfare is abhorrent and our lack of strong , stern laws being applied only encourage the ” don’t be too hard on them ” and what if the shark had eaten someone …they did the right thing eh.
Oh and ” its not like they murdered anyone ”

There is no respect in Aotearoa for the law too being applied and the sanctity and protection of life.

  11. I’m hoping this bizarre event wasn’t so much as a result of spineless cowardice as woeful ignorance.
Some people do terrible things to animals because they’ve yet to connect with the wee beastie and who’s to blame for that? The ignorant can’t seek the enlightenment we expect from them because how does one know to look for the information that one’s unaware of the existence of?
So, how do the ignorant become enlightened?
As a result of the teachings born of others, I’d a thought.
And how do others impart that knowledge?
Books? The media? Parenting? The cell phones people stare at obsessively like automatons hypnotised into a stasis of think?
I read above of how people, clearly with no small amount of pride, describe how they kindly dispatch their prey with minimal pain and suffering.
    What wank.
When a fish is on the hook, it’s in terror. When one sheep watches another sheep get its throat cut, that sheep begins to freak the fuck right out.
Animals are entirely sentient. They ‘feel’, love, hate, war and laugh just like us but at different levels of expression and just because you think you do the right thing by them by being all Zen like when you kill them to eat them, you’d be wrong in thinking that, that, makes it all ok.
    It doesn’t.
Torturing an animal for fun while knowing you’re causing it suffering is psychopathic and you should be chipped so we all know where you are 24/7, then we can stay the fuck away from you.
