So when are we going to talk about China and is milk a bit fascist?

‘Allow no escapes’: leak exposes reality of China’s vast prison camp network

Documents confirm largest mass incarceration of an ethnic-religious minority since second world war

The internal workings of a vast chain of Chinese internment camps used to detain at least a million people from the nation’s Muslim minorities are laid out in leaked Communist Party documents published on Sunday.

The China Cables, a cache of classified government papers, appear to provide the first official glimpse into the structure, daily life and ideological framework behind centres in north-western Xinjiang region that have provoked international condemnation.

Obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ)and shared with the Guardian, the BBC and 15 other media partners, the documents have been independently assessed by experts who have concluded they are authentic. China said they had been “fabricated”.

…when is our Government going to have words with our largest trading partner about those internment camps?

Cause like, these camps are pretty horrific.

I’m not sure we can keep trading and looking the other way can we?

Really?

Our need to keep selling milk powder to China means we are being silent on this vast human rights abuse that is a manufactured Orwellian obscenity.

Our reliance on milk powder damages our water quality, pollutes with climate changing gases and is ultimately a sunset industry that will be replaced by far cheaper synthetic milk.

So on top of the environmental damage, our reliance on milk powder is self censoring us to one of the worst ongoing human rights abuses of our age?

Is milk a bit fascist?

  1. Compared to the rise of America, Chinas rise is way less genocidal. New Zealand will be hosting Xi Xiping next year at APEC. We will have no choice but to allow safe passage or no one will want to come to New Zealand for peaceful talks.

    • Sam – Yes the United States have been involved in all kinds of shit in the past / probably are in the present but your comment is either naive in the extreme or you are working out of the Chinese Consulate on Great South Road.

      • There isn’t a nation in all of history that I would ahead ahead of interns of America’s Slave Trade and genocide of native Americans. The brutality, the stinch, the rise of America is down to one piece of technology, the bullwhip.

Besides that the differences between America and China to me, is a bit meh. China has more people, America has better technology. Stealing and reverse engineering technology does sacrifice a bit of quality. So when you’ve the largest population eventually a technological inferiority doesn’t matter when it’s 1 iPhone vs 2 Huawei phones so to speak. Eventually China will build a technology gap between them and the US simply because China has a larger population.

But again all I’m concerned about is the potential for miscalculation and the realisation that New Zealand has miscalculated. Helen Clark said in the early 2000 that New Zealand was in a benign strategic environment which has left New Zealand infrastructure and Defenceses extremely anaemic. ASEAN nations call us and the Phillopeans grasshoppers because we got rid of our Air Combat Forces. Our closet allies call us 4 eyes. Australia are cutting societal links with New Zealand.

Like that’s what I mean. What ever spy novel you’re on about sounds dumb.

      • I would say that jumping on the bandwagon of anything coming out of the guardian is naive in the extreme. This is a news site that has been well tamed and brought to heel since the Snowden leaks. This fact is obvious from its establishment line on the complete doctoring of the opcw report on Douma and its support of White Helmets boosters Bellingcat and Luke Harding. Not to mention the complete character assassination of Julian Assange. Suffice to say that Evil China is definitely a western narrative at the moment as was and is Evil Russia. The last time these claims surfaced they were shown to be complete bollocks being presented by a sole American who was not even a spokesperson of the UN group he was a part of. Of course once the claims are made people only remember oh yes that was a thing a ways back I remember but not that it was bollocks because as the commentary here shows its real easy to light the bigoted fire but always takes time to investigate where it all came from. So “appears to be genuine” in what way? Like the Douma gas attack that justified missiles but needed in the end to be supported by fabricated evidence? Or WMD? or Russiagate? or Ukrainegate?

  2. No Castro. It is far more preferable to have permanent military operations like counter piracy and boarder security than all out war.

  3. China is setting itself up to become the next sole global power, so welcome to communism folks if we accept China’s draconian dictatorship policies against it’s own people and later to ours.

    • China has no plans to become a sole world power. Your statement is complete bigotry. Please show us some links so we can all have a laugh at the websites you take as fountains of truth

        • America has been interfering in Chinese sovereignty since WW2. I think we should be a little understanding when China responds to meddling with booming economic expansion.

          • I think we should also access ulterior motives as well, – no matter what superpower we are talking about.

            And stop being so naive.

There’s far too many who call those who support the west , – and America, – in particular sycophants.

Yet the same can be said in inverse , – that those who cheer-lead for China or Russia or anywhere else for that matter are just as much sycophants as the rest of ’em.

There’s a reason China is expanding by economic means above military ones- and its called soft power. Their not just doing because they are the ‘nice’ guys.

            Think Taiwan.

            • In Alibaba, China has its own payments and settlements alternative to SWIFT. So China dosnt have to buy oil with US dollars. Unless the US DDays China there is nothing stoping China from being the richest most powerful Nation on the planet. And nations like Tonga, Samoa and Fiji don’t have to mow tow to New Zealand anymore when we give them measles or some shit.

Now we have paved the way for Chinese economic expansion in the South Pacific with our own foreign policy failures. We won’t win the Infeustructure battle so now we have to get our heads in the game and win the trade mark battle.

        • Becoming a sole world power requires by definition the projection of military force. Spies in no way fill this role so whats your point?

          • Ever heard of a ‘spearhead operation?’…

            Guess not.

Only an idiot would prepare a military takeover before they used spies to ascertain feasibility.

            Are you an idiot?

            Or just a Chinese sycophant?

        • Becoming a sole world power requires by definition the projection of military force. Spies in no way fill this role so whats your point? Nor does finance unless you would like to suggest that the World Bank and IMF are also striving for sole world power status? When China seriously starts with a network of miltary bases around the globe let me know so I can join your freakout club. The belt and road initiative may not be the best thing for the environment nor do much for climate change but to argue that infrastructure building on a massive scale is an attempt at world domination is patently absurd. Bob the builder as your new scary fiend?? You can point to Tibet if you like but one country? And thats your new world dominating sole power? Both Russia and China have gone for very sophisticated missile technology for one simple reason. Its very effective at neutralising enemy attack nodes like carrier groups so defensive technology not attacking technology.
Like I say, the Guardian has a track record of telling outright lies like the meeting between Assange and Manaforte that is something that only the infantile mind of a Luke Harding could dream up. Last time these stories of concentration camps came up they were shown to be lies. Appearing once again in a paper known to lie does not make them true

  4. @Sam. Please qualify with Historical facts i.e. a timeline your statement “Compared to the rise of America, Chinas rise is way less genocidal.”considering the disparate ages of both empires.
    Cheers.

      • Bollocks!! Sam.
Your brute ignorance is way out in front today.
        For your erudition:
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_China
( from Wikipedia opening line) ” The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC),”
If you meant from the reign of Mao Tse Tung you should have stated that. i.e. the later half of the 20th Century.
Otherwise your statement is drivel ……as usual.
And by the way Mao starved 10 million Chinese peasants to death in 1960-61
( Biography of Mao by Jung Chang) in order to supply Russia with food so they would build a nuclear bomb for China.
A population comparison with the USA for the whole of the 19th and 20th centuries would put that little act of genocide way out in front of the States for those two centuries alone.

        • It depends how fanatical you are about proving me wrong at every opportunity. That is why you started out so politely after all isn’t it?

By your account Deng Xiaoping and China will have fractured like the Soviet Union in the few decades after Mao.

If you’re practical, you will realise communism shortcomings, and Deng’s reforms as essential.

  5. So when are we going to talk about China – probably never!

I’m gutted that my taxes will not be going to support my children, but for new aged migrants coming here on mass due to government hand outs to cheap industry and people traffickers donating to their party.

“The number of Māori aged 65+ will more than double (from 48,500 to 109,400) between 2018 and 2034, as will the senior Pacific population (from 21,300 to 46,700), while the number of senior Asian New Zealanders will almost triple (from 59,500 to 171,900).”

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12281479

As for milk, I think they need to destock in places that dairying is unsuitable (aka Canturbury), remove the million dollar executive wages and make it $600k max no bonus at all so they don’t start doing stupid deals to make their 5 million bonus aka Theo Spieling style) make value add products from milk here, grow the domestic market for dairy, aka cheese is so expensive in NZ it is becoming a luxury item so they need to drop the price and sell more of it domestically while doing the opposite export wise, aka increase the price for value added products for export). Personally after the Melamine scare, I’m not interested in lab chemical milk, but am interested in better quality milk sold here.

    • The deliberate Melamine contamination and poisoning ( infants were killed ), was with natural milk, which wasprocessed into infant formula ,,,,

The milk was literally and criminally watered down ,,,, the Melamine was added to give a false normal / acceptable protein percentage,,,, which hid the watering down of the milk when it was tested.

” This milk powder contamination scandal caused 290,000 consumers to be affected around the world, more than 50,000 hospitalizations and six deaths in China (Morehouse, Freienstein & Cardoso, 2010).

” Fonterra was owner of 43% of the Chinese company Sanlu, and had three representatives on their board.
It appears that Fonterra had known of the melamine contamination six weeks before it “raised the alarm” (Dellios, Yang and Yilmaz, 2009).”

      ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((())))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Modern NZ Dairy intensification was the main Nact Govts economic plan ,,, along with sneaky tax haven law changes, pike river mine style deregulation ,,,and uber style non enforcement of white collar crime or other law flouting economic activity.

I’m not sure I would classify NZ dairying or milk production as Fascism,,,,, But as it was allowed to be practiced under the Nacts ,,,, Their non sustainable deliberate destruction of our waterways and environment,,,,,,, Where our rivers were sucked dry AND contaminated with farm sewerage,,,, was ‘Ecocide’ ,,,,,

Ecocide ,,,,, Is a War Crime which Nazis were convicted for ,,, committed during their scorched earth, famine creating, retreat ,,, poisoning the water and land ,,, destroying the environment

NZs peacetime Ecocide was and still is minimized by our mainstream media.

This was the Real Contamination taking place in NZ ,,, Not Paula Bennett / state Housing witch trial fake contamination,,,, with our media spreading and amplifying their abuse of science and language ,,, pushing the fake.

Meanwhile the real contamintion of our rivers and enviroment ,,, polluted with farm sewrage and chemicals ,,, to the point of serious and sometimes fatal health consequences ,,, was and still is described as ‘excessive nutrient levels ‘ ,,,, swimming in nutrients sounds almost appealing ,,, like swimming in Vitamins almost.

Swimming in sewerage sounds like what it is ,,, a disgusting contamination with dangerous and 100 % Real health risks.

‘excessive nutrients’ is an example of soft propaganda by our media ,,, another would be their hush hush when key was turning us into a tax haven ,,, they have a consistent bias for the benefit of our right wing vandals and crooks .

  6. And the US prison system as not awful too? Prisoners working as underpaid slaves answering phones for hotel chain call centers and more menial shit for next to nothing? It does not see them treated like dogs with minorities over represented in the system? It does not execute the mentally ill?

Is it Fascism that we have a longstanding relationship with them? Food for thought with a government that stated it felt it desirable their influence in our region should increase.

  7. ” I’m not sure we can keep trading and looking the other way can we? ”

Yeah Bomber it is what we do best just like every voter who supports the status quo of Labour and National and looks the other way whenever poverty and the working poor is mentioned.

We can continue too sign up too trade with countries like China and Saudi Arabia because human rights and misery including torture must be tolerated because money comes first and we ARE a trading nation eh.

Neo liberal dog eat dog policies have had the desired effect on our selected consciences in how we think
about the value of human life which has become a saleable commodity and our callousness.

Just look at operation burnham and the murder of the children involved and the subsequent cover up.
And the Maori families having their babies confiscated.

Hardly caused a ripple of outrage so yes we can look the other way and keep on walking.

  8. Presumably if we were to curtail exports to China we would do the same with imports. My cheap phone is as fascist as milk is. Actually I ordered it straight from China.

  9. Yes, well the data was always there if people cared to look,… if not in the above situation , there were other examples, like Tibet , the regular stouche’s over the borders with India, Amnesty Int has always highlighted it but our leaders chose to ignore it. So what light does this put those two twits who paraded down Queen St in full military dress uniform carrying the Chinese flag in now?

It could be said the Americans have Guantanamo Bay , and invaded a great many country’s , either directly or obliquely , and we have the 5 eyes thing going on, but in my opinion China is every bit as bad.

The problem is, we trade with many country’s that potentially can / could / do commit these human rights offences,… but where do we draw the line? That’s what comes from being a small nation, isolated, and reliant on trade. We don’t have a lot of purchase on the situation barring the U.N, perhaps. What worry’s me is the almost incestuous relationship between many of our politicians and China, – particularly with the National party. There seems to be many sweet deals going on at a private level with that lot ( and others ) regards China.

The out of control immigration issue is one thing , diplomatic relations with a human rights abusing nation is another. Which leaves the delicate situation of trade hanging in the balance.

One way of rectifying the leverage problem China has over us is going hard out on trading with Russia, possibly also Europe … which would be an out clause if the former decides to get stroppy, and also extricate ourselves from the whole USA /China power bid for the South Pacific. However, Russia’s human rights records are hardly less tarnished than the USA and China,… but it could give us some much needed clout in negotiations.

As for the ecological damage intensive dairy does to our environment, – well that’s our own internal issue to thrash out. But how our diplomatic / trade arrangements are organised, will effect our domestic environmental policy’s. But I do think the old adage ‘ don’t put all your eggs in the same basket ‘ applies here.

And that just doesn’t apply to smaller businesses, its trade, international relations , – just about everything when you are a small nation, but we just seem to lack visionary leadership and have done for decades. We seem to be stuck with all too many timid, cowering, unimaginative caretakers of the status quo.

I think that’s the real issue.

  10. Have said it before and will say it again – China is the Nazi Germany of our age and everyone just keeps on refusing to acknowledge what is right in front of them.
What we should be doing is calling them on it and immediately deporting all Chinese many of them with close ties to the ruling elite in China (of course other than Chinese NZ’ers who are born here / are Kiwi as and have no direct connection to the PRC) . . we won’t of course because unlike WWII we are now too chicken shit to stand up to a totalitarian regime that has no respect for human rights or international law.

    • Holy crap. Anyone Asian looking needs to be subjected to JBs kiwi as test. I think that really is a line down which true fascists always end up travelling

      • You are free to go with them Spikeyboy . . you can hold their hand on the plane back and I’m sure Chinese nationals with PRC passports wouldn’t be too hard to differentiate from Filipino’s or Koreans.

        • Right so at your checkpoint where you stop suspicious looking asian people you now check their passports to see if they belong to your target group before whisking them away for your kiwi as testing? Hmmmm… Where have I heard about that sort of thing before?…

  11. NZers are in their majority boot-lickers, although they firmly claim the opposite. It is the purse strings that make NZers ‘obey’ forces. And China Corp holds the purse strings over NZ Inc, so NZers will sign up to almost anything they need to ensure China keeps this economy beating a heart beat. Never mind human rights violations, never mind labour and indoctrination camps, Jacinda can walk around with a fashion mag style dress and make nice speeches, NZers thing they live in the land of milk and honey, never mind where the money comes from.

  12. Here’s a detailed account of how indeed milk is fascist…
    https://videoeducationjournal.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s40990-018-0021-3
“The McCaw advertising campaign has continued with Ritchie’s Milk Run – Fonterra Milk for Schools (Fonterra 2018a, Ritchie’s Milk Run – Fonterra 2018b Milk for School). With McCaw Fonterra has achieved a level of credibility with New Zealand audiences that could be said to be complete. McCaw, in his new incarnation as helicopter pilot is filmed descending from the skies not unlike Jesus in the Second Coming to deliver the miracle liquid of the gods to the chosen schoolchildren of Godzone.

By applying a Barthesian semiotic analysis – denotation, connotation and myth (Barthes 1957) – to these Fonterra TVCs it is possible to detect a number of disturbing similarities to the films and propaganda of the Nazi era, most notably the films of Leni Riefenstahl as discussed by Susan Sontag (Sontag, 1980). The famous opening sequence of Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will, for example, has The Fuehrer descending from the skies like a classical god in his silver flying chariot/aeroplane to appease the adoring crowd who await him in a state of rapturous applause and worship (Riefenstahl (1934).

In other Fonterra sequences McCaw is shown in friendly dialogue with dairy farmers as they wander around the farm and its milking sheds (Fonterra 2016a, Our Pasture – Trusted Goodness). He nods in agreement, ‘knowing’ of their challenges and observing of their hardships. He is one of them, yet his central focus in the frame and his charisma as a famous All Black defines him as the “benign Super-Spectator”, as Sontag calls Hitler in Riefenstahl’s Olympia (Sontag, 1980). This is not to say that McCaw is in any way like Hitler, but the iconography of his representation is similarly constructed. McCaw becomes the charismatic leader in this affirmation of community, a noble specimen of physical and mental prowess and the upholder of the Kiwi values identified with the Fonterra brand: the strive to perfection, the sanctity of courage, the boldness of goals and mastery over the land and all its animals.

That Fonterra promotes a kind of agrarian nationalism is fairly obvious from their TVCs. Philip Armstrong (2017) has done some important work in drawing attention to this aspect of their television iconography, even if he manages to hold back from making the ‘blood and soil’ analogy. If we can agree with John Ralston Saul that contemporary globalism is “fascism without the jackboots” (Saul 1999) we can say that Fonterra’s exploitation of rural settler identity is not so much their version of Lebensraum but rather the transfer of vast amounts of international capital, derived as it is from the suffering of vast numbers of animals. Fascism’s concept of “domination and enslavement” (Sontag 1980) is thus transferred, via the brutality of market economics and the Cartesian view of the mechanistic animal, to the operations of the animal industrial complex.

The enduring imagery of New Zealand as an Arcadian paradise with up-to-date technological practices and happy cows has been reproduced through Fonterra propaganda. In all their advertisements, Fonterra never mention the deaths of up to two million bobby calves. These calves remain invisible, as if they never existed.”

  13. Maybe we all should be writing to the Mongolian Ambassador in our midst? A fulla that goes by the name of Mathew Hooten.
We could ask him to use his power of office to make demands of the Chinese as an Official within the ‘family’?

As a NZ’der Im sure he’d do it!!

Hoots backs himself in most of his causes, so this should be a piece of cake for him!

  14. Believe it or not, I have read every comment following this article. I was hoping to learn more about the situation in Xinjiang for the 50% of the population of that area of China who are Uyghur. Maybe what I read in the comments was relevant from a very abstract viewpoint, but it seems that no-one in NZ really knows or cares about ethnocide. From what I’ve read over the past 2 years in international newspapers the current situation for the Uyghur is very similar to what it was like for Jewish Germans about 5 years before WW2 started. The same total lack of concern, racist hostility and agreement with goverment propaganda exists towards the Uyghur as was experienced by pre-WW2 Jews in Europe. This is a horrible way to govern and manage tangata whenua in any country and seems to be based on nothing more than racism and xenophobia.
