Christchurch whanau are still reeling from all that has happened to them. First they survived the actual natural disasters and then they have gad to survive National’s disasters in cleaning it up.

It’s been textbook disaster capitalism – a vote for John Minto reverses that.

    • ‘Does’ is spelled D.O.E.S.

As for cup cake crapping Unicorns? I don’t think they exist in Adult Land.

As for the rest of your statement.

” Peak oil, climate change, overpopulation, sea level change, and total global economic collapse, oh and human extinction.”

John Minto has a reputation for defending humanitarianism and empathy stretching back decades. Do you not read? Perhaps not, since your spelling is as above.

Lianne Dalziel has a reputation stretching back to roger douglas and the mid 1980’s and look where that’s got us?

And John Minto is running for Mayor of Christchurch. Not God. John Minto will have enough on his plate trying to fend off money fetishists and narcissists from feasting on what’s left of the crippled carcass of a once pretty little town. I doubt he’ll have time to also fix the global issues you raise here. But one never knows. The Revolution must start somewhere?

And why would you write the above? To cast doubt? To drip poisonous logical fallacies into the eyes of the swinging voter?
” Cup cake crapping Unicorns ” ? I mean, really. Grass shitting Friesians would at least be local and topical. And logical.

    • Do you have evidence showing that he is wrong? We’ve believed the seductive fairy-story of endless ‘economic growth’ for several generations now, in search of the glossy-magazine lifestyle; but more thoughtful people have started to realise that we are over-using fish stocks, water resources, strategic minerals etc., and stuffing up the climate. Even those woolly-minded tree-hugging greenies the Pentagon have been warning about the consequences. Time for us all to grow up, share global resources more fairly, and be happy with less toys.

      • That is shrinking global resources. Non Renewable global resources.

Not sharing but conserving and restoring all we can would be a better aim than “sharing” unless you mean sharing with the next 100+ generations.

Deeply embeded consumerism is a virus which sharing will spread.

    • Not all that useful making a list of nouns without a verb or a subject.
Even your partially alliteration falls short of saying anything.

      • Careful @ Mike East. You’re reaching out past your IQ. You’re heading into dangerous territory which you’ll probably be familiar with.

What would you call selling off Christchurch’s hard earned assets to the already rich if nothing less than ‘wacky’. Have you ever come home without the cow but with a handful of beans?

Here’s a word of caution to all those Trolls out there watching, your black, beady, greedy little eyes glittering.
        You must try harder.
The Trolls will be watching the coming weeks with increasing alarm as John Minto gains support.
And remember? Those Trolls have been around since roger douglas, and in some cases, even earlier.
The old Trolls will be bringing out the heavy artillery so nothing should surprise us Humans in the run up to the mayoral election.

        • What did I miss?
I live in the east of Christchurch and have suffered bad roads and a lot more for five an a half years.
Mr Minto is running on a plank of no rates increases ( an inflation backed increase of .4% is actually a decrease as costs of services will rise more than that)
In addition to running the city he will also provide free public transport, 1000 homes for the needy and make the rivers swimmable, not only in Christchurch but in the whole province of Canterbury and that’s a whale of a lot of rivers.
The CCC is heavily in debt.
His promises run into billions of dollars.
How can he deliver this with the same income the CCC had last year?
I must have missed something as I don’t see where the money to do these extra things as well as running the city on the same budget will come from.

      • What’s “wacky” then, that you refer to??? As if what we get from our national government get is not more wacky.

  1. Lianne is part of the ” ole boys network “.
She admits that the Christchurch Council has lost power and influence.
Why ? The City has been taken over by the same facets that control most governments – the elite corporate control – etc. and the Rothschilds group who own much land and businesses down there – making huge bucks and the people continually being denied.

Again their ole motto – seen all over the world –
    PROFITS — BEFORE — PEOPLE.
Their criminal bankster buddies and investors have taken over Christchurch and if John Minto gets in there may be a chance for some healing and recovery. Lianne is owned and controlled and just another puppet though she laughs at any of these type of assertions.

    • And the Rothchilds group? Woops – that’s a big accusation, but perhaps it’s true.
To check this could you please give a list of businesses and land the Rothchilds own in Christchurch.
Not the lot but say ten businesses and ten land ownerships should be enough to confirm your claims.
If not in the Rothchilds name please advise the names of their nominees.
If you can’t show proof it’s better you stop the accusations.

  2. The majority of voters like being lied to and robbed, unfortunately. They repeatedly vote for mediocrity, mendacity and theft. And still believe in a more secure and prosperous future under the leadership of nincompoops and criminals, having been carefully trained to think that way

On top of that, big business is never going to allow anyone who is not pro-big-business into power.

Nevertheless, thanks for trying, John. The uninformed masses will start to get it when they have been betrayed and impoverished a bit more.

    • Thank goodness there are sane and aware people like John Minto who want to stop the DIRTY POLITICS. He may not get in but good on him for trying
and being part of solution and problem solving and not part of the
oppressive and criminal corporate elite. The ones who have the
      Christchurch council by the balls.

People like Mike East are completely unaware of the integrity and compassion of John Minto and feel threatened when someone stands up against the upper 1 % ers.
You know, the lying greedy ones party to so much misery.

  3. You could convert that list to a nationwide one except Little believes in the same prescription as John Key.

    Minto for Mayor.

  4. I won’t be voting Minto.

And the attack on Lianne is not totally accurate. National policies favouring roading and cars are the reason that so little emphasis is put on public transport. It is because of National policies on irrigation and a disregard for non-irrigation users of fresh water that we have poor fresh water quality (and National appointed hacks at Environment Canterbury don’t help either).

Is Lianne perfect? Heck no. She has made mistakes and I am not altogether happy with the Council’s spending priorities. But she had to make sense of a council that was a mess post-Bob Parker, and for the most part, I think she has done just that.

    • Please do not blame Bob Parker. Look at those in the shadows, in control of a city that has much value for greedy corporations ; criminal banks : Fletcher Building ; The John Key related Rothschilds elites and on and on etc . . . . . . .
Look, also, at how much China has gained as we have bought a ton of building supplies etc. from them. I mean why buy local when you can get less quality products and pay less ?

    • Aha! Yet another property fuelled would-be-capitalist twat.

I’m sure you’re only here to slam the left wingers and not to offer useful comments.

Why the heck do you bother visiting this site?

You know perfectly well it’s patrolled by rabid commos like me and there’s no way we’re gonna let your daft neo-liberal ideas go unchallenged.

Let me recommend Whaleoil to you; it’s more your style…

            • Dave, get your pleasure and kicks from visiting those right wing; narrow minded biased sites.
Your energy is somewhat toxic and you love to stir the pot serving no one. You’ll fit right in elsewhere.

                    • Well Dave here is your chance to say something profound and explain why inequality is growing in NZ , our debt is increasing, our production from small businesses has been crushed and our self reliance with home grown goods is diminishing, less families buying houses even with two incomes and tertiary education for Kiwis is becoming .an impossibility for a growing number.

Meanwhile transnational profits are climbing while the wealthy investors are paying less taxation in real terms terms

                      Go Dave!

        • Oh, you mean those funny wee trolls and those teeny tiny stirrers with their salt spoons? Them? Aren’t they droll?! Like little dust mites on a convection current. Or mice on a wheel going nowhere…

          • I have praised a lot on here, the last one suggested removing soft drink from school tuck shops I think. It is a shame that there are some really silly people on the left that really turn people off.

  5. To assist Auckland voters, we need something similar as a comparison for Auckland and candidates for Mayor here, I think.

  6. If we want a healthy economy we simply have to sort out the fundamental environmental issues – including climate change. And we have to stop the current Minister for Doing Nothing about Earthquake Recovery from promoting schemes that benefit his business cronies at the expense of everyone else. So, in terms of ideology, I’m with John all the way. The only issue is – how is he going to pay for all his proposals? All over the western world, governments and councils are already heavily in debt (while the corporates make multiple billions and worm their way out of paying taxes). This is a multi-faceted problem that we as a society simply have not found a way to tackle.

    • You need to look on the website it explains how the policies will be paid for. Deferring the ridiculous big projects that will be a milstone round the necks of christchurch ratepayers is just one part of this.

    • If you’ve got assets, you get money back off the assets to run your city.

If you sell the assets, you have to borrow to run the city and keep rates in check.

The only ones who benefit from asset sales are corporates (who pay little or no tax), the rich (who fart through silk while the poor live in cars), the bankers (who caused the GFC and expected taxpayers to bail them out, and who STILL get multi-million dollar salaries).

Vote Minto and keep your assets Christchurch.

  7. They are both terrible candidates, it’s like picking between arsenic and cyanide. Minto is nuttier than a fruitcake. Lianne is corrupt and booze soaked. I think I’ll vote for Minto through, because I’m sure him and Gerry will end up in a fist fight – which would be HA-larious~!!!

  8. Can’t cap rates at rate of inflation due to:

    1. Sprawl pushes costs up exponentially
    2. The council adding new services

  9. I doubt whether Zac, Mike East or Robert Glennie have read the policies and the thoughts behind them.

Zac and Mike please tell me what you have done for society – please I am interested. Minto is a full time physics, sciences, maths teacher, highly respected as a teacher. He has throughout his working live mostly worked in low income schools where he can make an enormous difference. In addition to this he has worked for much of his adult life for the underdog, the disenfranchised and the poor. I could give you a list if you like but I doubt you would bother to read it.

Robert every year the CCC get a budget via the government for transport. Please tell me when Ms Dalziel stood up to the government and said, we intend to use a greater proportion of our budget on public transport and less on roading. Every kilkometre of new road costs us $20 million and new motorway $33 million. Even the head of Transit NZ has said (on video) that the new motorway out of chch will not stop gridlock it will only allow you to have a better idea of the time requried to get into the city. Dalziel is Brownlee’s handmaiden and we all know it. Lianne said in an interview reently that she has ‘left politics’ -what does this tell you. She is trying to ensure that she is no longer tarnished with Labour policies and disgraceful stuff voted in support of in parliament.

Has anyone yet come into power either at local body level or government level and not said ‘oh dear we didn’t realise what a state the books were in….’ which means screw the people, never the businesses.

  10. I had a hard time deciding, and even though I think John Minto will not win, the more voted he has the clearer the message will be that people want his policies. Looking at the list, apart from free public transport which I’m not sure is achievable (but I may be wrong here and we still need to promote public transport), all sound like plain common sense to me.

  11. John Minto is doing a “Bernie Sanders” forcing Dalziel’s camp to shift their public stance on selling off the public assets.

Unfortunately this will make for less difference between them in the eyes of some but the underlying sentiments remain unchanged.

Neoliberalism is still resident deep within the Christchurch bonanza for Fletchers and transnationals. Lianne has done little to make fora change.

  12. Let’s conservatively guesstimate that there’s a yearly yield of 4% on those $600 million of city-owned assets and it would be $24,000,000.

That’s $24 million that would be going towards keeping Christchurch’s rates under control for as long as they own the assets. That would be $24 million that could go to Christchurch services for Christchurch people EVERY YEAR the assets are owned.

Once those assets are sold, there’s no dividend (except to Gerry Brownlee and John Key’s rich mates).

New Zealanders have seen what neoliberal bullshit economics means for middle and low incomes for the last 32 years. Cameron Slater (John Key’s BFF) called the people of Christchurch East “scum”. Selling the assets would help the rest of Christchurch’s middle income, home-owning, rate-paying home-owners to “trickle-down” to the same level as Slater “scum” when they cannot afford the rates, once assets are sold.

Or Christchurch could change its name from the Garden City to the Jaffa City of the South. Invite Chinese and wealthy overseascolonists investors to Christchurch, to inflate the housing stock prices and buy all the remaining city-owned assets.

Keep your assets Christchurch. Minto was right to oppose racist rugby tours and he’s correct about keeping Christchurch assets in the hands of the city and its rate-payers.

The vitriole that’s being heaped on Minto is a neoliberal troll-fest. Christchurch election soon, and general election next year. If Dalziel is elected, sells off the family jewels, the only protest vote then, will be in the 2017 general election. The general election will be New Zealanders’ chance for a Brexit vote.

    • If farmers and dairy farmers weren’t draining the rivers with irrigators, frackers polluting the aquifers, corporates buying water rights for a few beads, a second hand mirror and some magic beans, water quality would be better than it is and neither candidate would have to cholorinate anything.

Better still, sack the fascist, unelected Environment Canterbury and take back control of waterways and expect swimmable rivers, not wadeable rivers
