Why Horncastle would become a political liability for National
If Matthew Horncastle’s National Party ambitions are real, it could be one of the most politically revealing moments of the election cycle. Because candidates don’t just represent themselves — they expose the values of the party they stand for.
If this is who National selects, it’s not just about one candidate — it’s about what the party is willing to stand beside.
Matthew Horncastle is clear on which party he’d be aligned with.
“If you want to be PM, you have to run through National. I reckon you’ve got to lead by example. You’ve got to win your electorate, right? Surely, I win Christchurch Central. Easy,” he says in a long sit-down interview at his Garden City headquarters yesterday.

The possibility of someone as radioactive and toxic as privileged property speculator turned political aspirant, Matthew Horncastle running for National would be the greatest win for the Left we could ever imagine.
Culture war politics is becoming the brand
His unhinged madness, weird culture war bitterness and gleeful ignorance are a-once-in-a-generation combination that must be National Party bound.
He has all the fascism of a white evangelical Christian with all the false confidence of a tall man. He’s like alt-right dickhead billionaire, Nick Mowbray, but with less charm.
His public comments on Twitter would embarrass your average South American drug cartel.
If there is a God, someone as contemptuous as Horncastle will run for National, to be able to smear them all with his a brand of politics built on grievance, ego, and culture war theatrics would be fucking glorious.
Hell, I will convert to Christianity if this right-wing, sanctimonious blowhard runs for National, because that would be actual evidence that there really is a God and God wants everyone to know that National are the cruel wealthy shit stains we all suspect them to be.
Because candidates don’t just campaign — they define the tone, the values, and the direction of a party. And if this is the direction National is comfortable with, voters deserve to know exactly what they’re being asked to endorse.
If Mathews’ mates in the National Economic Mis-management Party hadn’t cancelled the State House build and emptied 770 State Houses to sell to National’s Developer Mates, the rough sleepers would be sleeping in State Houses. And if they hadn’t implemented a generation and a half of Neoliberal Unemployment, no one would even be considering the street as an option.
Cast your mind back to the 50’s, 60s, 70s, street life wasn’t even a thing in this country. National PM Holyoake counted the unemployed on one hand. National PM Muldoon was ashamed of 3% unemployment and “made work” for the people.
Today National’s mates are out on the town, moaning about reaping what they’ve sown.
Horncastle – what shelters? Under a bridge? In a doorway? That just shows how shallow and thick you are! How can you represent the values of the National party when they don’t have any VALUES! Did your ‘friend’ upset the homeless person, was he derogatory, mouthing off and cruel? So easy to coast along when you have all the goodies and look down on those who have lost their jobs, homes and even family. And of course they are ‘dying’ to go to jail with warmth, food and a roof over their heads! How about putting the blame where it firmly lies – with this inept, corrupt govt. and their greedy, grasping enablers. It’s not because many of the homeless haven’t worked hard – it’s the inequitable pay disparity and again GREED. Horncastle is a sanctimonious, smug National misfit so sure fits the bill!
