…Winston knows exactly what he’s doing.
He knows that Luxon is toast now he forced a leadership vote and it’s only a matter of time before the next poll sees him rolled.
Winston is making it clear to the National Party traitors he’ll see a coup as instability, and instability is the trigger for a snap election.
Hell, Winston might even use Luxon’s weakness now as the reason to clip him himself.

Redmayne, Willis, Bishop, Goldsmith, and Pugh are wary that National may hold more electorates than their polling, meaning that there would be an overhang – wiping out all the list MPs. With electoral boundary changes, Bishop knows he will lost Hutt South and Willis can’t win any Wellington seats. With vote splitting, that would put Winston is an even stronger position and the right wingers in the National caucus with safe seats will sit back and watch the sideshows. The overhang could deliver a victory for the right, even though the left achieves a higher party vote.
Luxon should stay in power, as his misleadership is the best thing for the Left.
He was deeply hopeless at AirNZ – but this is what National wanted.
Please keep Luxon – he is doing an incredible job : for the opposition.
Winstone, who so often dismisses polls, will be watching the polls very closely. Is it better to strike now or does he think NZF can slowly but surely increase its vote share even more over the next six months. My guess is that he wants Luxons death of a thousand cuts to continue as long as possible.
