List of lies NZ Defence Force have used to deceive NZers about Afghanistan

9

The NZDF have come out and claimed that Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson are wrong about their latest claims of war crimes  and that they have put peoples lives in danger.

Bullshit.

With all due respect NZ, you have been lied to and deceived for a very long time by the NZDF.

This is the exact same NZDF who co-ordinated a disinformation campaign against Jon Stephenson to discredit him after he published articles highlighting the SAS role in handing civilians over to known torture units. That smear attempt was the subject of Stephenson’s defamation case, sadly for Stephenson and journalism in NZ, the jury returned a hung decision allowing the NZDF to get away with zero public scrutiny, however they were forced to ‘settle’ out of Court to prevent it going back to Court, so terrified were the NZDF that NZers would wake up to what was happening.

But that isn’t the only example of how the NZDF have lied and manipulated the NZ media over what the NZDF are really doing in Afghanistan.

Nicky Hager’s other brilliant ‘Other People’s Wars’ blew the lid right off how much manipulation has really happened.

The mainstream media’s self censoring compliance with the NZ military and their outright willingness to don a flak jacket and helmet and play the intrepid journalist shtick is actually part of the problem.

From the book…

having CIA operatives inside the Kiwi base fitted poorly with the deployment’s stated goals. Why would the New Zealand authorities risk the New Zealanders working at Kiwi Base, and the credibility of the New Zealand peacekeeping mission, by mixing them up with a CIA operation? After the suicide attack on the FOB [forward operating base] Chapman, the issue of CIA operations inside a provincial reconstruction team was widely discussed. The Times wrote that “PRTs have been criticised widely for endangering civilian aid workers by blurring the line between development staff and the military.

…so from the beginning of our deployment we were a cover for the CIA and it’s not as if our teams actually built anything of any use with independent reports citing the spin work we did for the locals to hide what we are really doing as “poorly planned” and “wildly exaggerated”.

The level of deceit Hager exposed hasn’t just been promoted by the left, it has also been held up by the Right.

NZ Herald’s Fran O’Sullivan at the time…

Bluster won’t bury Hager’s revelations on military
The tsunami of flannel emanating from John Key, Phil Goff and the former Defence top dogs will not bury Nicky Hager’s latest exposure on New Zealand’s involvement in Afghanistan, Iran and the war on terror.

Nor should it.

Whatever your position on New Zealand’s relationship with the United States – and I have been a long-time advocate for much closer political, trade and defence ties – Hager’s Other People’s Wars makes public plenty of new material about the origins of this country’s entry into the first wars of the 21st century.

Former Political Editor John Armstrong at the time…

‘Candyfloss’ PR exposed in all its cynicism
Those who think Nicky Hager is just another left-wing stirrer and dismiss his latest book accordingly should think again.

Likewise, the country’s politicians should read Other People’s Wars before condemning it.

Whatever Hager’s motive for investigating New Zealand’s contribution over the past decade to the United States-led “war on terror”, it is pretty irrelevant when placed alongside the mountain of previously confidential and very disturbing information his assiduous research and inquiries have uncovered.

With the help of well-placed informants and thousands of leaked documents, Hager exposes the cynical manner in which the Defence Force has purposely misled the public by omission of pertinent facts and public relations flannel.

This is particularly the case with regard to the “candyfloss” image the military has built around the deployment of New Zealand soldiers in the Bamiyan province of Afghanistan.

That image is of our soldiers acting more like peacekeepers armed with nothing more dangerous than a shovel.

Our military have lied and deceived our own politicians about what we were really doing in this war for America…

Defence Force staff responsible for the deployment of Orion aircraft and Anzac frigates to the Gulf in the “war against terror” ignored instructions from then prime minister Helen Clark to keep their operations separate from those being conducted by the United States against Iraq. The book quotes unidentified officials and former diplomats as agreeing that Clark – lacking a strong defence minister – fought a lone battle against never ending efforts by the Defence and Foreign Affairs ministries to rewrite Government policy and buy military equipment which would enable New Zealand to build bridges with the United States.

New Zealand diplomats resorted to underhand tricks when they did not get their way with the last Labour Government. For example, when Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials did not like a particular Government policy decision, New Zealand’s ambassadors in Washington and Canberra were told to sound out the views of the local bureaucrats. The ministry would then tell Government ministers that the Americans and Australians had made it known they were very concerned and there could be “relationship implications”.

So when we look over all the deceit, misinformation and anti-democratic tactics used by the NZDF to manipulate the compliant mainstream media, how much more difficult is it to believe the NZDF are suddenly telling the truth now?

Hit and Run details with precision what happened in the run up to a revenge attack for the death of a NZ soldier and the incompetence of the so called intel led to us attacking villages that had nothing to do with the death of our soldier.

The SAS led a mission signed off by John Key that has killed 6 people and injured 15. To pretend there is nothing to see here suggests that the NZDF and our Political class think we are fucking stupid.

You have to read the book to know that these claims the whole thing is just one big lie by Hager and Stephenson are void of any fact.

Workers described as “pimple on a pumpkin” return to work

Workers described as “pimple on a pumpkin” return to work

BNT (Brakes and Transmission), the Australian-owned car parts supplier, is struggling to get products to the market after workers at its Auckland distribution centre walked off the job for the fifth time on Friday.

The fifth strike, ending today, comes a month after the company’s chief executive described ongoing strike action at the company as just a “pimple on a pumpkin.” But an internal memo sent to staff with the New Zealand CEO cc’d reveals that BNT is hiring additional staff and requiring “everyone to do at least 5 hours of overtime in the week” to help clear the product backlog the strikes are creating.

“Our members just want to get the job done, but that’s becoming harder and harder as their wages and conditions fall further and further behind their colleagues at other distribution centres in Auckland,” said the workers’ representative, FIRST Union organiser Emir Hodzic.

“They’re taking strike action as a last resort. All they’re after is a wage they can support their families on. The cost of housing is through the roof, the cost of electricity is rising, even school fees are going up. But while everything else goes up their wages remain the same.”

“BNT have been dragging negotiations out for months now. They’re one of the poorest-paying employers in the industry and our members are left with no choice but to take action,” said Hodzic.

Support for UCAN NZ Health Charter – Child Poverty Action Group

0

Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) supports and endorses the Health Charter by the United Communities Action Network New Zealand (UCAN) that says “everyone deserves the right to health”.
UCAN, an organisation formed four years ago, believes that the right to health is, “being denied to many in Aotearoa-New Zealand, through poor access to health services, an unfair economic and education system that strongly favours the wealthy over the poor.”

CPAG agrees that much of the poor health among children in New Zealand is attributable to “inadequate and unhealthy housing, poor living environments that alienate vulnerable sections of the community.”

The link between poverty and poor mental and physical health among children, whose opportunities to thrive are compromised, is very real. Professor Innes Asher, Health Spokesperson for CPAG says that “poverty and unhealthy housing and inadequate basic health care are the drivers behind many of the thousands of children admitted to hospital each year with preventable diseases.

“Comprehensive effective policies are needed to change this grim situation which results in large numbers of children, many of whom are babies, becoming very sick and who often suffer lifelong damage.”

CPAG says that UCAN promoting the right to healthcare that is not met with a cost barrier is a commendable effort, and aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which New Zealand ratified 24 years ago.

CPAG notes with great concern that over half a million New Zealanders cannot afford to see their GPs. We are asking that the Government extends the zero fees scheme for free access to General Practice to include all children up to their 18th birthdays.

This would be one of the measures needed toward a goal of halving the number of hospital admissions for preventable illness among children – which is currently around 40,000 annually.

The UCAN Health Charter (2016) also supports everyone having the right to affordable, safe and healthy housing.

CPAG hopes that there will be a greater commitment by the New Zealand Government to ensuring that every family has access to an affordable, healthy home. Instituting a rental Warrant of Fitness to ensure that a minimum standard is met and that homes are made to be safe, dry, and insulated would be a step toward ensuring better health for all children of low-income families.

Elderly Tāmaki tenant continues her struggle despite all odds

0

Ioela (Niki) Rauti who has been fighting her eviction has vowed to keep the fight against the gentrification and privatisation of her community as she is declined a re-hearing.

Last night Niki’s application for a re-hearing was declined. This means Niki’s stay of proceeding that was protecting her from bailiffs and police coming in has now been lifted.

Niki’s lawyer has requested another stay of proceedings and has an appeal in the district court. The stay of proceedings is likely to be heard today but Niki and her supporters are preparing for the worse.

2,800 houses in Tāmaki were transferred to Tāmaki Regeneration Limited in April 2016, with the tenancies transferred to a subsidiary Tāmaki Housing Association Limited Partnership.

This April, expressions of interest to manage these homes will close, opening the management of low-income vulnerable tenancies to the private market.

This privatisation process of state housing is what Niki and the Tāmaki Housing Group have been fighting against for 5 years and is now being realised.

The management of social housing in the Tāmaki area are being transferred to companies who can make profit. The land is being sold to developers and investors to build a large number of private mansions.

This is not “regeneration”, this is gentrification. This is not effective management of social housing stock, this is privatisation.

Niki is making a stand against her eviction in the context of her community being destroyed. Tāmaki is a community, not a company. Join the struggle.

CAFCA LAUNCHES AOTEAROA INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT

0

The advent of Donald Trump in the US provides an unprecedented opportunity to take a good, hard look at Aotearoa’s place in the world.

And to ask the question – why are we still a loyal member of the American Empire?

As the old saying goes, you are judged by the company you keep.

CAFCA says it’s time for this country to pull the plug, to finish the business started in the 1980s which saw NZ out of ANZUS; and break the chains – military, intelligence, economic and cultural – that continue to bind us to the American Empire.

Let’s deal with the world on our terms, not on those dictated from whichever empire we happen to be a junior member of at the time.

CAFCA is preparing to initiate and drive a nationwide dialogue to advance the case for a non-aligned Aotearoa based on policies of economic, military and political independence.

This is not a new thing from CAFCA – it has been part of our core issues since we were founded more than 40 years ago (see our Charter “What Does CAFCA Stand For”).

Somebody needs to take the initiative and we’re happy to do so.

Accordingly, we announce the launch of the Aotearoa Independence Movement and invite as many people as possible to join us.

What is AIM? It’s a campaign, not an organisation.

What is a specific example of what being non-aligned would look like? An obvious one would be to get Aotearoa out of the Five Eyes spy network and close the Waihopai spy base.

That would remove this country from being entangled in wars and spying that serve the interests of the US and and other countries, not ours.

Being non-aligned would eliminate the use of the NZ military as guns for hire in other people’s wars and prevent them committing the war crimes detailed in Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson’s new book “Hit & Run”.

Another one would be to drastically tighten the foreign “investment” laws governing who owns our companies and land.

What will AIM do to “initiate and drive this nationwide dialogue”?.

That will be decided by the organisations and individuals that get involved in the campaign.

It is not about Donald Trump.

He is simply the catalyst who offers us a once in a lifetime opportunity to build this campaign and create a truly non-aligned Aotearoa.

We know that there are plenty of New Zealanders right across the political spectrum who are just as appalled as we are by what the world is witnessing going on in the US every day.

But it’s not about whoever happens to be US President.

This is about the longer view and the bigger picture.

Nor is it “anti-American” (or “racist” or “xenophobic”, for that matter).

We stand with the American people who are fighting back in their millions.

We stand with them as we stood with them in common causes ranging from opposition to the war in Vietnam and the invasion of Iraq to the failed attempt to impose the TPPA on both of us.

The campaign has begun for a truly non-aligned Aotearoa.

Details will be announced as they come to hand.

We call on as many people as possible to get actively involved

5: Could New Zealand Face the International Criminal Court for War Crimes in Afghanistan?

The coming days are critical to determining New Zealand’s liability for war crimes at the International Criminal Court, following today’s release of Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson’s new book Hit & Run. I’ve worked at the Court as an investigator, and at every other UN war crimes tribunal. The key question will be whether New Zealand is willing or able to investigate the allegations regarding SAS troops in Afghanistan during August 2010, or if the International Court will have to step in and do it for us.

Perhaps contrary to what you might expect, war crimes are not a numbers game. One unlawful killing can lead to charges at the International Criminal Court. Furthermore, it can actually be lawful to kill civilians in certain contexts. However, reviewing the 151 pages of this book, I can see there are sufficient grounds to include these allegations in the International Criminal Court preliminary examination against allied troops in Afghanistan—a case which I have worked on.

It is considered a war crime to intentionally direct attacks against civilians, to destroy the property of adversaries unless immediately demanded by the conflict, or to torture detainees. International law also requires that after an attack all parties should attempt to take care of wounded, and states must investigate allegations of war crimes by their armed forces.

The book records details of the alleged killing of six civilians in the New Zealand-initiated and led raid, including women and children as young as three, plus injuries from shrapnel and fire. It documents reports of New Zealand troops destroying villagers’ homes, and failing to offer help to wounded villagers. It also reports one incident where a captured insurgent is allegedly beaten by New Zealand forces in the back of a van, then handed over to Afghan secret police to be tortured.

New Zealand Defence Force has issued a repeat of their statements in 2011 and 2014 saying no New Zealanders were involved in the killing of civilians.

3: Donald Trump Is Filling Top Pentagon and Homeland Security Positions With Defense Contractors

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP has weaponized the revolving door by appointing defense contractors and their lobbyists to key government positions as he seeks to rapidly expand the military budget and homeland security programs.

Two Department of Homeland Security appointments Trump announced Tuesday morning are perfect examples.

Benjamin Cassidy, installed by Trump as assistant secretary for legislative affairs, previously worked as a senior executive at Boeing’s international business sector, marketing Boeing military products abroad. Jonathan Rath Hoffman, named assistant secretary for public affairs, previously worked as a consultant to the Chertoff Group, the sprawling homeland security consulting firm founded by former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff. The firm has come under fire for advising a variety of firms seeking government contracts, including for full-body scanners deemed invasive by privacy activists. Hoffman also led a state chapter of a neoconservative military-contractor advocacy organization during the 2016 presidential campaign. Neither position requires Senate confirmation.

Personnel from major defense companies now occupy the highest ranks of the administration including cabinet members and political appointees charged with implementing the Trump agenda. At least 15 officials with financial ties to defense contractors have been either nominated or appointed so far, with potentially more industry names on the way as Trump has yet to nominate a variety of roles in the government, including Army and Navy secretaries.

Before their confirmations, Jim Mattis and John Kelly, the secretaries of the departments of Defense and Homeland Security, were primarily paid by defense firms.

Mattis was paid $242,000, along with up to $500,000 in vested stock options, as director of General Dynamics, a company that produces submarines, tanks, and a range of munitions for the military. Mattis also received speaking fees from several firms, including Northrop Grumman. Kelly previously served in a number of roles at defense contracting consulting and lobbying firms and worked directly as an adviser to Dyncorp, a company that contracts with the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

Defense firms have eagerly watched as Trump recently unveiled a budget calling for $54 billion in additional military spending next year, as well as an additional $30 billion for the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security for this fiscal year, which ends on September 31. About $15.5 billion of the $30 billion is slated to be spent on new military equipment.

The spending spree will provide a brand new opportunity for defense lobbyists to get business for their clients. And the most effective lobbying generally involves contacting former colleagues in positions of power.

2: Twitter: Over half a million blocked for ‘terror’ ties

Social media giant Twitter announced it has suspended 636,248 accounts since the middle of 2015 as the company steps up efforts to counter “promotion of terrorism” around the world.

In its latest transparency report published on Tuesday, the company said 376,890 accounts were shut down in the last six months of 2016.

The move comes as social networks are under pressure from governments around the world to use technology tools to lock out individuals promoting religious violence, and others who use the platforms to recruit and launch attacks.

1: Fox drops analyst who said UK might have helped spy on Trump

Fox News has dropped a legal analyst who claimed British intelligence might have helped spy on Donald Trump during his bid to become US president.

Andrew Napolitano had been pulled from the channel, a source at Fox said. The network made no immediate comment on Monday.

Napolitano said last week on Fox & Friends he had three intelligence sources who said Obama went “outside the chain of command” to watch Trump.

Britain dismissed the report as “nonsense” after the White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, quoted it in a briefing, part of the administration’s continued defence of Trump’s unproven contention that Obama wiretapped him at Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The director of the FBI, James Comey, testifying before Congress on Monday, became the latest official to state that no evidence had been found to support Trump’s charge.

John Key – you have to tell NZ if you committed a war crime

95

Nicky Hager has teamed up with Jon Stephenson to produce a compelling prosecution of a war crime that John Key signed off on.

It is alleged with clear precision that John Key green lighted  a revenge mission for the death of a NZ SAS soldier and because it was poorly planned and knee-jerk we have targeted and destroyed 12 houses, killed 6 innocent civilians (including a school teacher and a child) and seriously injured 15 others.

The targeting of civilians and gross incompetence marks this out as a possible war crime.

The former defense minister described the incident as the, “biggest and most dangerous operation in Afghanistan, a fiasco.

NZDF realised that the raid had gone wrong but instead covered it up and lied to media about what actually happened.

We, the people of New Zealand must demand an independent inquiry into what the fuck has happened here. Why were we lied to? Who did we kill? How did it happen? Have we committed war crimes? Will John Key be charged for these war crimes if they are war crimes?

If we as a country are going to cheer when our troops go to war to fight ‘da terrorists’ then we have to demand accountability when they kill civilians! We deserve to know the truth before John Key steps down – did he or did he not order a poorly planned strike that killed 6 civilians?

Jesus wept this disgusts and angers me so deeply – if you send troops to a foreign land you are fucking responsible for what they do!

Brothers & sisters, we fund the NZ SAS – when they pull a trigger, we help pay for that trigger – Key has made us all killers here.

The Prime Minister has blood on his hands and we must demand some answers before he steps down.

Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson are two of our greatest investigative Journalists and anyone attacking their credibility is a hollow liar who probably hasn’t even read what they have written.

We are once more in their debt for holding the powerful to account.

Now it’s our job to raise hell until we get  some answers. Don’t let Key get away with this.

Talk to your friends, talk to your family, share, share and bloody share again on social media until we find out what the bloody happened here.

Those 6 dead people and 15 we injured deserve nothing less, our honour may have been stained – by holding the military and political class to account is how we wash that stain away.

Rachel Smalley’s feminism and the hypercritical cult of motherhood – on beneficiaries and children

9

Rachel Smalley ain’t happy.

This time it isn’t her desire to exterminate Indian students who don’t fill in their forms properly or Jacinda being too pretty, or women being fat cow heifers and lardos.

No, this time it’s about damaged women having children.

This isn’t the first time Rach has had an opinion on solo mums, last year she was demanding Spanish inquisitions for any woman not handing the details of the birth father over to tax officials.

She’s a wee charmer our Rach.

Everytime it is noted that a beneficiary has children the immediate question that springs to everyones bloody lips is ‘why are you having a kid if you can’t afford them you filthy scumbag piece of shit”.

In unison they joyfully cry out, “Why do we have to pay for your filthy stinking maggot children”.

As a chorus they cheerfully sing, “Haven’t you fucking heard of the pill you fucking slut”.

Etc, etc, etc.

As a cis male member of the heteropatriachy, it ain’t for me to step in and pretend to be an expert on how women and their identity towards having children should or shouldn’t be supported, but I can hazard some guesses.

Our cult of motherhood is a basic plank and pillar of our entire society. We all love our Mums, Mums are amazing, we all buy her crap for Mothers Day and Mums are always thanked whenever someone wins anything.

So we all love our Mums.

Except when it comes to paying them equally like men.

Except when they are being beaten up and staying.

Except when they get pregnant and can’t afford it.

In a world where motherhood is the only role we as a society openly celebrate women to embrace with gushing warmth, is it any wonder women who are hurt or damaged like Oriwa Kemp (who Smalley threatens with forced sterilisation), constantly seek that motherhood adoration while failing at being good mothers?

Doesn’t the desire to keep having children tell us how limited the roles for women are in modern society? What if we celebrated women scientists, lawyers, teachers or doctors with the same passion as we celebrate the myth of motherhood?

If I were a poor, broke woman with little respect given and few roles offered, I can see the romance and self fulfilling fantasy of having a child to give meaning and purpose to my life. I can see why so many women decide to grasp desperately at that identity and ultimately collapse because the reality is so hollow.

That’s why I don’t scream ‘why are they having babies’ as if the answer wasn’t in front of our faces.

Smalley’s ‘feminism’ is the same kind of middle class ‘feminism’ we see gaining increasing traction in modern NZ. All about ‘me’ and ‘my’ career options minus any empathy for the ‘us’.

How enlightening.

If we made all young girls feel wanted and included for who they are and what they can contribute to our society rather than hold their womb up as the only purpose for them being here, we wouldn’t feed the hypercritical cult of motherhood the way we currently do.

5: The FBI is Investigating Trump Connections to Russia

FBI Director James Comey received permission to take the “extraordinary step” to testify about the investigation before Congress.

After weeks of speculation, FBI Director James Comey testified before Congress that the FBI is investigating allegations the Russian government interfered with the 2016 election. That investigation is also looking at whether Donald Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russian agents.

“That includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts,” Comey told the House Intelligence Committee during a hearing Monday. “As with any counter investigation, there will also be an assessment of whether any crimes were committed.”

Ordinarily, the FBI doesn’t comment on the existence of ongoing investigations, Comey said. But he had received permission to take this “extraordinary step.” Comey later added that the investigation into Russian interference originally began in July 2016.

4: British banks handled vast sums of laundered Russian money

Britain’s high street banks processed nearly $740m from a vast money-laundering operation run by Russian criminals with links to the Russian government and the KGB, the Guardian can reveal.

HSBC, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, Barclays and Coutts are among 17 banks based in the UK, or with branches here, that are facing questions over what they knew about the international scheme and why they did not turn away suspicious money transfers.

Documents seen by the Guardian show that at least $20bn appears to have been moved out of Russia during a four-year period between 2010 and 2014. The true figure could be $80bn, detectives believe.

Top US intelligence officials, including the director of the FBI, say they have no information supporting President Donald Trump’s claim that his predecessor Barack Obama ordered a wiretap of him during the 2016 election campaign.

FBI Director James Comey appeared on Monday before a panel of Congress members looking into possible intelligence breaches, allegations of Russian hacking, and links between Moscow and Trump’s campaign.

“With respect to the president’s tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets,” Comey told members of the House Intelligence Committee.

2: DONALD TRUMP PLANS TO ELIMINATE LEGAL AID FUNDING THAT SUPPORTS SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

IT WASN’T LONG after Sonota got married that her husband began to abuse her. After her second child was born in 2012, the violence accelerated; police were often called to the couple’s St. Louis, Missouri, home, and Sonota had to seek medical attention more than once. With a 1-year-old son and newborn daughter, Sonota knew she was in trouble. “I had a lack of support and I was in an abusive situation and I had two babies,” she told The Intercept. “I was just very overwhelmed and lost and needed some type of guidance and help to get into a safe place in my life for my kids.”

Sonota found that help at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, a nonprofit legal aid organization that provides lawyers for low-income individuals navigating the civil justice system. For Sonota, that meant helping her to obtain a protective order against her husband, to file for divorce, and to secure child support for her children. Her legal aid attorney also helped her to get access to therapy, a cellphone for emergencies, and school supplies and Christmas presents for her children. The assistance made it possible for Sonota to get her life back on track — into housing and back into school, where she obtained an associate degree in business management and accounting. “I love business,” she said. She intends to use her education in part “to teach my kids how to be employers and not employees.”

“Deliverance was everything,” Sonota said. Her legal aid champions “were compassionate and yet realistic and logical, you know, to direct me on a better path in life, and I just love them for that.”
