There is widespread consultation going on about the future of Tomorrow’s Schools (among so many other things!). Implemented on 1 October 1988, the model was founded on the neo-liberal concepts of choice, competition and (at various points) a weakening of the relationship between the state and schooling.
The entire policy was hysteria promoted by the National Government when they needed a distraction from privatising state housing, whipped up by a media dependent on property speculation for revenue.

Based on the low threshold of fear that it takes for business confidence to dry up in NZ – things like eclipses, women voting and Maori with PHDs would have to be banned for NZ Business to feel confident.
