  1. They were commenting about how there wasn’t a Labour booth at the field day. Why bother? Any farmer who voted Labour would be ostracised, and probably driven off the land. It’s embedded in their DNA.

    1. Agree. They won’t even talk to anyone who’s not a farmer.
Do they think others somehow know how they vote? Don’t they realise it’s a secret ballot and they have privacy for a reason.

I’d hate to feel so constrained but I know people who are.

  2. I was present in Munich, Germany, in November 2023 when the New Zealand Ambassador to Germany Mr Hawk presented the NZ EU deal to mostly a German audience. The agreement emphasises New Zealand’s commitment to climate change adaptation as well as upholding the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. With this agreement NZ farmers have gained shelf space in EU supermarkets. They take climate change very seriously in Germany and a number of other EU countries. Many countries in the EU produce dairy products and want as much shelf space as possible When french, italian and greek farmers find out the NZ government is pissing on its commitments to climate change they will eventually demand NZ products and produce be removed from EU supermarket shelves and be replaced with EU produce and products until NZ changes its policy. When Ireland, which had a long history of resisting and fighting colonial occupation by the English, finds out about the current racist policy the NZ government has towards Maori by breaking the NZ EU trade agreement; by undermining the Treaty of Waitangi in legislation and in education; by attacking the use of Te Reo Maori in schools and cutting funding for iwi climate change initiatives, the Republic of Ireland too could easily demand NZ produce and products be removed from EU supermarket shelves until there is a change of policy by the New Zealand government. 3. Farmers, in the form of Federated Farmers really don’t want the rest of us to like them and they’ve been like that for years.
They love to play the downtrodden underdogs, the poor little victims.
The unappreciated hard-working sons and daughters of the earth.
Then they go and get another Ranger to make themselves feel better.

I didn’t grow up on a farm but my father worked supplying equipment to farmers, milking machines. He always thought they were the backbone of the country too but he also saw their weaknesses at that time, dirty polluters and not too good with animal welfare. That was the ’60s.

Next time we have catastrophic weather of some sort and predictions make it seem imminent, drought OR flooding, farmers will have their hands out wanting relief. They’ll show some skinny sheep on TV and we’ll all say, yes they need relief.
What we don’t see is the new tractor, the flash Ranger and huge house, behind the camera operator.
We don’t see the huge money they got from Fonterra and the nasty looking water draining from their drought-stricken land.

Farmers would say they are too busy working to read much about politics but maybe they should forgo the usual sources and look at who really works hard for farmers.
Thinking the right does because Luxon scuttles past in his brand new red bands and a swanndi at field days, is dumb.
Just from the TV news I detected a level of discontent with this CoC govt. Farmers aren’t all fooled by Luxon’s talk. Some have been thinking harder and can see the truth now.

    1. A lot of farmers now vote ACT .I wonder if they know that ACT dont like corporate welfare which means they wont be getting any drought relief from them .I guess the other two parties will suck up and give them a few billion .
