Outspoken property developer Matthew Horncastle won’t say when or if a career in politics beckons – but he has shed some light on where and with whom. Herald senior journalist Mike Thorpe reports.
The managing director of property heavyweights Williams Corporation has had plenty to say on social media lately – from attacks on Chris Hipkins and Chlöe Swarbrick to calls to imprison former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern over her role in the COVID response.
The proud Christchurch city resident says if he did run for office himself, he’d have eyes on becoming Prime Minister as well as winning an electorate seat.
If this is National’s future, what does that say about the party?
Matthew Horncastle is clear on which party he’d be aligned with.
“If you want to be PM, you have to run through National. I reckon you’ve got to lead by example. You’ve got to win your electorate, right? Surely, I win Christchurch Central. Easy,” he says in a long sit-down interview at his Garden City headquarters yesterday.

The possibility of someone as radioactive and toxic as privileged property speculator turned political aspirant, Matthew Horncastle running for National would be the greatest win for the Left we could ever imagine.
His unhinged madness, weird culture war bitterness and gleeful ignorance are a once in a. generation combination that must be National Party bound.
He has all the fascism of a white evangelical Christian with all the false confidence of a tall man. He’s like Alt-Right dickhead Billionaire Nick Mowbray, but with less charm.
His public comments on Twitter would embarrass your average South American Drug cartel.
If there is a God, someone as contemptuous as Horncastle will run for National, to be able to smear them all with his a brand of politics built on grievance, ego, and culture war theatrics would be fucking glorious.
Hell, I will convert to Christianity if this sanctimonious right wing sanctimonious blowhard runs for National, because that would be actual evidence that there really is a God and God wants everyone to know that National are the cruel wealthy shit stains we all suspect them to be.
Because candidates don’t just campaign — they define the tone, the values, and the direction of a party. And if this is the direction National is comfortable with, voters deserve to know exactly what they’re being asked to endorse.

Horncastle has achieved nothing by himself. He inherited wealth and, due to a lack of intelligence and ability, turned to real estate.

Christchurch has a decent amount of left supporting voters and while the obnoxious types you describe exist there also they do not define the city or its people.
Why am I not surprised at your envy of someone who is successful. There are plenty of rich children that have squandered their inheritance but Matthew has used his knowledge and contacts to employ an army of contractors to build homes both big and small for people to live in . How many people have you homed or employed?
Christchurch is a city full of hard working people who rebuilt a city of be proud of thanks to the helping hand of the Key government that got thinks moving .

Christchurch is a leftwing stronghold and is a booming economic engine. It’s Auckland that’s become a right wing stronghold and economic failure it’s Auckland safe where left wing seats have gone right wing, it’s Auckland that has supplied the country with fourty years of neoliberal prime ministers.
Id actually happily separate the south island from the North island. The south is predominately hydro generated, Dunedin and Christchurch would ensure a south island Republic was social democratic, it’s the south where everyone in the world wants to visit.
Christchurch with its booming economy and insanely fast growing population is a modern city where as Auckland is a city stuck in the 1980s economically and politically.
