Waatea News Column: The bewildering irony of Boot Camps after Royal Inquiry into State abuse
There is a sad repetition of intergenerational damage being caused by the bewildering irony of the Government announcing Military Boot Camps in the same month as the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry finally delivers its terrible verdict.
The long running Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry details the terrible harm done to young people in State and religious care.
The overwhelming reality of harm revealed by the Royal Commission demands a response from Governments that doesn’t reseed the bitter harvest previous State care has mutated into!
By simply recreating Military Boot Camps despite the Royal Commissions findings is shocking and painful and feels like nothing has been remotely learnt.
Because Māori are so staggeringly over represented within our punishment system, this is an issue that demands their input yet this Government has made so much milage out of being tough on crime, they are spending $5million on these boot camps as a political virtue signal rather than serious social policy.
Māori voices have been silenced and are being silenced again!
The Prime Minister when challenged on the counter productive impacts of Military Boot Camps declared he didn’t care and that is the most concerning part. The current Government simply doesn’t care if the policy works or not, they only care to look like they are being tough on crime.
That is a terrible place to govern from.
This government does not care about the 90% that are actually the backbone of nz they only care about the rich pricks at the top .Sadly there is 20% of the 90% that think they are rich pricks as well so they trample over the rest trying to be confirmed as a rich prick .Such is their desperation to become a prick they vote for the I DONT CARE PARTY .Mean while their country burns or drowns and they have to deal with the violence and other white collar crime that is becoming more rife in the community .
Military bootcamps can work for many. I have lived in Sweden where young men generally dislike the idea on entry but speak fondly about the discipline and character and comeraderie it developed in their lives.

I have met several ex servicemen over the years and they all said the training was the most demeaning time of their lives .Their self was taken away till they become robots
I agree with that after having to do National Service in the U K.
