  1. Paul you need to remember that Tarrant is Australian and radicalised overseas, not here.
There were no lurking cells of kiwi far right terrorists under the bed.
Granted there are some skin head muppets notably in chch but they don’t seem to have been an actual threat.
Whereas militant Islam has been a real threat to western nations for some time.
So it’s easy to overstate why the security apparatus was wrong looking for Islamic rather than right wing nut jobs.
Sure security services failed to stop him but to me this is far more a failure of application of firearm licensing rules for a foreigner than anything else.
Not only was he not flagged as a potential terrorist by his online behaviour and travel history, he was anointed so exceptionally responsible he was given a firearms license.
And a “sorry” is all 51 people’s families get.

  2. One of the things that interests me is what Paul Buchanan describes as “bureaucratic capture”.

I commented on Efeso’s contribution yesterday (“Sorry’) somewhat cynically. But its quite sad to see how so many politicians – including Labour have succumbed.
Even worse that it appears that even Andrew Little may have succumbed. He didn’t buy into it over Pike River, but he may just have done so in this case. Let’s hope not – I understand not buying into it can be pretty tiring.

It’s a fundamental feature of the managerialism that’s now pervasive across nearly all public service agencies and its collected one or two casualties over the past 3 or 4 decades. It doesn’t even have to have been by intention. It captures politicians, it captures new entrants into the public service, and it even captures members of the judiciary at times. (It sure as hell captured Rebecca Kitteridge sorry to say – but then fuk Her – it’s not as though she’s a dimwit)

I’m hoping Labour wake the fuck up before too much longer. Other than a core of a few that seem to understand the concept – that UNDERSTANDABLY doesn’t include JA, any future wins are going to be down to the lack of any better alternative.
Personally, I’m bloody sick of having to vote for the least worst option and I suspect there is a growing number that feel the same.
The natives are getting restless, and there are probably a few pollies and CEOs, certainly a couple of academics and one or two members of the judiciary that are probably still wondering why.
