Waitangi Tribunal review to begin mid-year – Govt
A review into the Treaty of Waitangi Act – which established the Waitangi Tribunal – will begin in the middle of the year, the Government confirmed today.
What this Government couldn’t do with the Treaty Referendum, they will attempt by attacking the Tribunal.
National desperately need to pull some of the redneck vote they have lost to NZF and ACT and what better way than some kangaroo court attack on the Tribunal.
This is a disingenuous bad faith attack on a crucial institute driven by the needs of political dog whistles, nothing more.
White Settlers hate the Tribunal, the Treaty and Māori so need the hatred to hide behind all the donor interests they are making law.
The critiques of this latest redneck stunt are worth looking at…
Review is in ‘bad faith’ – Labour
Labour Māori development spokesperson Willie Jackson said the review of the act was “completely unnecessary”.
“It’s extremely bad faith to conduct a review, right when the Waitangi Tribunal is conducting urgent inquiries into the actions of this Government.”
“Just last week, a scathing review by the Auditor-General gave government departments a year to improve their performance in meeting their obligations to iwi and hapu, advising that the Government faces a greater risk of legal action because they have failed to fulfill Treaty settlements.
“Instead of acknowledging what could be a huge upcoming fiscal cost to the Crown, and making changes, the Government is instead reviewing the Waitangi Tribunal’s role. The Government has also passed 20 pieces of legislation since coming to power undermining Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the Tribunal’s role.”
…and the Greens…
‘An attack on Te Tiriti’ – Greens
Green Party Māori development spokesperson Hūhana Lyndon said the review was “nothing more than an attempt to limit the accountability the Government has to Te Tiriti o Waitangi”.
“This is not about improving the Waitangi Tribunal like the Minister says, it is about making it easier to trample all over Te Tiriti and punch down on tangata whenua.”
Lyndon said Te Tiriti o Waitangi “provides a place for us all in Aotearoa” and a “layer of a protection for our people and our lands”.
“We know our communities will not stand for this. We saw thousands flood the streets and submit in droves against the Treaty Principles Bill, calling for a country that acknowledges its past and strives for a better future.”
…and the Māori Party…
An effort to ‘erase our voices’ – Te Pāti Māori
Te Pāti Māori spokesperson for Te Tiriti o Waitangi and MP for Te Tai Tonga, Tākuta Ferris, said the tribunal was one of the few instruments available to Māori to seek redress for breaches of Te Tiriti.
“The mere suggestion that the Act and the Tribunal should be reviewed signals this Government’s belief that the Crown alone should define the meaning, relevance, and limits of Te Tiriti,”
“Make no mistake, this review is a continuation of efforts to erase our voices and control the narrative of our dispossession, for the economic benefit of those who desecrate our people and our whenua.”
…this is nothing more than another bullshit move by a gutless Minister attempting to woo redneck white settlers.
This is what this Government is twisting our country into.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.
Waitangi Tribunal was set up with clear guidelines and what it’s mission was.
It has strayed very far from those guidelines on its own…no legislation to guide it as to what it’s morphed into.
This review will, quite rightly, put it back in its lane and continue to do as it was set up for.
If it doesn’t, then it’s disestablished and shut down.
It’s a government organisation, it’s under the government ruling, it has gone rogue for years now, this review is years overdue.
It’s time to close it down.
It’s time to close Bob troll down.
end the tribunal is most preferable but if that cant happen then limit its scope to historic claims only.
the tribunal poking its nose in on many of the coalition govts changes is ridiculous, maori are over represented in parliament now so maori have plenty of input and no need for the activist tribunal to get involved and virtue signal.

Martyn – The Waitangi Tribunal does need to be reviewed, just like any other Government institution…
When are people going to come to understand that ACT is a humiliation both locally and globally.
Everyone’s talking and writing about the disastrous cult that is neoliberalism aka reganomics, thatcherism and our own rogernomics was.
Seymour’s a sick, sad little clown who’s dropped his tooter and run out of fart jokes. –
-nathan- The Waitangi Tribunal is Maori for Maori – So- fuck – off – . –
I tell you what @ – nathan- ? How about we- review you-? Who are you with your dainty little feet in every trough and you lips on every right wingers arse hole? What’s you run dude-?
Oooh…! You’re also dip shit im right ! Of course!
The Killer T-Cell – Bugger off! It is a Government institution, and nothing else…it needs to be reviewed like every other Government institution.
You are correct nathan however it is a matter of opinion whether existing working govt acts that are the basis for institutions require review. In this case opinions on the rationale for review at parliamentary level of the Waitangi Tribunal will ultimately come down to public sentiment similar to the recent Treaty of Waitangi Bill. At this stage it is fair to say that opinion is weighted more on the side of supporters of the Waitangi Tribunal than those who want to see it removed. Time will only tell, I would add that the next general election is the true litmus test.
Yes while technically correct but ignores racist and blatant political motivated expediency for promoting a review from the Absolute Cretinous Trash munters.
Neil – Well said/posted…
Nathan given his often ridiculous, childish and right leaning comments is most likely Bob the Fart in disguise.
Soooo fucking on brand!
Thankfully the Government itself will be reviewed next year and gone, as it has gone rogue and veered out of its lane.
Agree Squeaky .
The racist redneck wrecking crew are way out of line and need to be decimated in the next election into single % figures . Better still deleted from parliament completely.
The Right will win the next election in a landslide, they have no opposition.
Labour Party are the same people who lost the last election in a landslide.
The Green Party is dysfunctional, no longer a political movement with an emphasis on the environment.
Maori Party don’t want to be part of Government, happier on the sideline throwing bricks.
Bo the first – At this stage, yes!
Yes yes yes yes yes and the moon is a balloon and the earth is made of Swiss cheese and flat as a pancake
lets hope so!!!
we need identity politics to disappear and govt to govern for ALL kiwis as a whole and end the pandering to certain races or groups like the gender benders.
I’m not a Kiwi. I’m Pasifikan and i don’t need to be governed by some cracka ass 19th century system that is no longer fit for purpose.
The Left will win the next election in a landslide, they have no opposition.
National Party are the same people who won the last election by default.
The ACT and NZ First Parties are dysfunctional, no longer a political movement with an emphasis on the environment.
ACT and NZ First Parties don’t want to be part of Government, happier on the sideline throwing bricks Bob troll.
‘Waitangi Tribunal was set up with clear guidelines and what it’s mission was.’
Bullshit!
Until the Treaty is ratified and made a permanent part of law in Aotearoa governments make take as much, or as little notice, of recommendations as they wish. That means the guidelines count for nothing.
its a historic document and nothing more. its only relevance should be to a museum.
theres no maori left in nz only white people with varying amounts of maori ancestory.
what is a white people?
Wow that was racist Trumpet, have you any more or is that all you have?
The latest fair pay bill is now a historic document nothing more, its only relevance should be to a museum. there’s no women left in nz only men with varying amounts of male ancestory.
See how silly you sound.
I really don’t understand why you people don’t get it. The Treaty so “called” attack distracted the lemmings for the first half of the term… this will cover the second half.
ACT AGENDA TILL NEXT ELECTION.
tHIS MONTH SHIT ON WOMEN
NEXT MONTH SHIT ON THE RAINBOW PEOPLE
THE MONTH AFTER SHITB ON MAORI
THE MONTH AFTER SHIT ON THE SCHOOL KIDS .
AFTER THAT START AT THE FIRST MONTH AND RINSE AND REPEAT TILL NEXT ELECTION .
PREVIOUSLY SHIT ON SCHOOL LUNCHES!
The Tribunal is light on lawyers which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Perhaps some realistic appointments might help.
I predicted that as soon as the Treaty Principles Bill was done the coalition would come up with additional ways to continue the attack. This a political strategy aimed at the Māori Party and pushing them to into extreme political behavior. Which can be used in the 2026 election to weaken the left coalition.
We need the Labour Party to step up on this issue – somehow – without falling into a culture war trap. Which might be impossible because David Seymour is a masterful genius when it comes to developing sophisticated and well masked race war policies.
Nah, David Seymour is no ‘genius’ just a puny little cretinous piece of trash that gets away with what he gets away with because everyone around him including the media are too timid to take him down.
