Maritime Union of New Zealand media release: Auckland port privatisation report must be released before consultation ends

The Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) has urgently requested a report produced for Auckland Council that examines the case for the privatisation of POAL operations.

The call comes as the Council consults on the privatisation proposal as part of its long term plan. The consultation ends this month.

MUNZ National Secretary Craig Harrison says consulting on privatisation while holding back vital information about it is cynical and shoddy.

He says Aucklanders are being asked to make a decision on a proposal that puts billions of dollars at risk but they are not being given the full story.

“We understand that the council has possession of a report by economist Craig Renney that is likely to contain information about the council’s proposed privatisation that Aucklanders need to read and we have asked the Mayor’s office to urgently release it.

“The Council can’t keep its citizens in the dark on this. There’s far too much at stake.”

A copy of the request – made under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act – is available to view here.
