South Africa files case at ICJ accusing Israel of ‘genocidal acts’ in Gaza
South Africa has filed a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of crimes of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza after nearly three months of relentless Israeli bombardment has killed more than 21,500 people and caused widespread destruction in the besieged enclave.
In an application to the court on Friday, South Africa described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group”.
Restrictions of movement: Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza are under relentless and extreme control over all travel and movement.
Gaza Strip
Armed Palestinian Resistance: Palestinian Resistance continued launching dozens of missiles towards the Green Line.
Air strikes: Heavy aerial bombardment on buildings, homes and many facilities.
Attacks: All over Gaza there are air strikes, heavy gunfire, tank and artillery shelling, as well as missiles fired from Israeli forces and military occupation, especially in Khan Yunis. The Israeli Navycontinues to fire missiles, targeting facilities and buildings along the shoreline of the whole of Gaza.
Victims:
210 people killed in Gaza brings the total number of deaths since 7 October to at least 21,320. With another 360 wounded, that total has risen to 55,603. Fully accurate statistics are not available,due to insecurity menacing hospitals in the Gaza Strip.

Latest developments:
Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said that the war is far from over, during his visit to Israeli soldiers in Gaza on Monday. He added that the remaining captives taken by Hamas during its 7October attack on southern Israel cannot be freed without military pressure. Families of captives heckled Netanyahu during an address to parliament earlier on Monday.
Both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas have denounced Netanyahu’s statements in Gaza.
Israeli Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, said: “We will stop working with those who cooperate” with Hamas, in a post on X on Monday.
As a response to Cohen’s criticism of the UN the recent visa denials, Francesca Albanese, the UN’s special rapporteur to the occupied Palestinian territories, said Israel’s “baseless attacks” on the “UN only proves moral cowardice”.
Human impact and fighting
Over 100 people were killed overnight in the Israeli air strike on the Maghazi refugee camp as some families are still trapped under the rubble.
Palestinian authorities have reported that 250 people were killed in waves of Israeli bombardment over 24 hours on Christmas.
The attacks have taken place in the al-Amal neighbourhood in the southern city of Khan Younis, as well as the Bureij and Nuseirat camps and Juhor ad-Dik in central Gaza.
An Israeli air attack outside Syria killed a top Iranian military advisor, Sayyed Razi Mousavi, on Monday.
WHO Chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said Gaza’s health system is under “unbearable strain” in a post on X on Monday.
West Bank
Israeli Army attack: Jerusalem – 19:00, Israeli Occupation forces fired live ammunition towards people, near Al-Quds University in Abu Dis.
Israeli Army attack – 1 resident killed – homes invaded: Ramallah – 01:00, Israeli forces raided Beitunya and invaded homes, shooting and killing one resident: Hazem Abdel Fattah Qatawi.
Israeli Army attack – 14 wounded – homes invaded – plunder – 2 taken prisoner: Ramallah – 01:00–06:25, Israeli troops stormed Ramallah and al-Bireh, raiding homes and the Al-Huda and Al-Ajoli currency exchange companies, robbing them of ten million shekels and wounding 14 residents. Two people were taken prisoner.
Israeli Army attack – drone-launched air strike – 5 wounded – plunder: Jenin – 00:40, the Israeli Army stormed Jenin as well as the refugee camp, carrying out a drone-launched air strike, injuring five people and plundering three currency exchange companies.
Israeli Army attack – home invaded – 8 taken prisoner: Tulkarem – 00:40, Israeli troops, firing live ammunition, stormed Tulkarem and the refugee camp, raiding homes and currency-exchangestores. Eight people were taken prisoner.

Israeli Army attack – 1 wounded – home invasion – plunder: Jericho – 01:15, Israeli soldiers stormed into the city, as well as the Ein al-Sultan and Aqbat Jabir refugee camps, invading homes and wounding one person: Zaid Zidan Zakaria al-Razem. Three people were taken prisoner in the Ein al-Sultan refugee camp.
Israeli settler arson: Bethlehem – Occupation settlers, in al-Rashayda village, used a drone to pour a chemical substance on, and set fire to, a tent–dwelling while the family were still inside. No one was injured.
Israeli Army attack – 3 wounded, including 1 child: Hebron – 20:30–00:50, Israeli Occupation forces stormed into Bani Naim, wounding three people, including a child.
Israeli Army attack – 3 wounded – plunder: Hebron – 00:50, Israeli forces stormed into Halhul, raiding a number of homes, wounding and taking prisoner three people: Khaled Hassan Ali Abu Saima (aged 17), Suhaib Majid Abu Asab and Akram Abu Rayyan. The Israeli military also plundered a currency exchange and a jewellery shop before leaving the area.
Death: Tulkarem – 16:50, a Tulkarem refugee camp resident, Abdul Karim Ibrahim Badirat, has now died from wounds sustained during a storming of Tulkarem as well as the Nour Shams and Tulkarem refugee camps by Israeli Occupation forces on 14 November.
Death: Nablus – morning, Nablus resident, Tariq Maher Al-Shakhshir, has now died from wounds sustained during the storming of Nablus by Israeli forces on 18 December.
