Why we need a Childrens Commissioner in NZ chosen from ethical, experienced and humane people, not bureaucrats or politicians or by bendable public voting. Sometimes ‘the people’ do not or can not allocate enough time from enough truthful information to make decisions that affect other people’s lives. Religion can not be relied on to do things right for people’s wellbeing; ideology can form a wall of some height preventing that sentiment. It isn’t just an Irish matter, but this is one example that has received a revealing light that shows we need to swivel it to fall on other people and locations.

The unthinkable becomes thinkable. Life is disrupted and will go further to verge on chaotic. Transport in Wellington has been run into the ground without a decent tunnel, by insistence of selling rights to private interests to run it, and retendering to avoid ‘excess profits’. Walking and waiting will become more part of the mass transport experience I think.
I wonder when people will really get the message and look at ending present ratty systems, mainly economic at their root, that hold the nation back? Can we work at becoming capable. effective. resilient, co-operative and happily-balanced, and solicitous to and about each other. More pick and mix and less picky and sicky. You can tell a poorly run home when the grown-ups refuse to take responsibility for the practical running of the home and environment in their locality. Our politicians are so empty of spunk and duty that they will not ban private fireworks, yet taxes remain high and rates are often up exponentially, largely again because of government inaction. So as we can’t go forward in managing ourselves well, we go backwards every year, deteriorating further.
I suggest we put politicians and administrators, on tendering for the project they intend to work on, and payment in stages as completed and checked, and an hourly rate for actual work, quite high, but not allowing for meal breaks etc. Also they have to contribute to a NZ owned insurance scheme that contributes to failures from errors of projects they have been assigned to. We are supposed to be running in a more businesslike manner, so let’s get applying business approaches to the matter not in hand, but slipping through our fingers.

The pyrotechnic bonanza, understood to have cost tens of thousands of dollars, went ahead despite neighbours starting a petition to stop it over concerns about the impact it would have on horses and other animals in the area. More than 600 people signed it.
Firefighters were called at 12.10am. The blaze involved three separate fires burning in tussock on steep terrain and came within 15 metres of the property tycoon’s house.
It was contained by about 2.30am and burnt about 0.5ha of land (revised from the initial estimate was 1.2ha). Volunteers were there until about 7am knocking out hotspots and monitoring the situation.
