Cost of Living Crisis highlights how pathetic Labour’s Supermarket response is

That whiff of desperation you smell here is a Government realising that the cost of Living Crisis is killing them politically.

The spineless gutless Labour Government wouldn’t step up and actually take a 30% stake and run our own supermarket player to force actual competition and food security AS ADVISED BY THE COMMERCE COMMISSION, preferring to do the age old meaninglessness masquerading as tweaks and first good step crap.

To be fair to David Clark, the measures being forced here are structures that at any other time would enable downward price pressures.

Ending the obvious abuses of power like land covenants is good, as is the ability for local supermarkets to rebrand so a 3rd player can enter the market, and most importantly allowing competitors like smaller dairies and minimarts, butchers and grocers the ability to buy at the same wholesale price is another structural feature that will push prices down.

HOWEVER

These aren’t normal times!

Government after Government have allowed the Supermarket Duopoly to grow out of control so these basic regulatory features which should have been implemented decades ago, simply won’t be enough to stem the pain of food inflation!

It suggests that the Government are slowly realising that the Treasury’s predictions of the inflationary spike to be temporary are optimistic in the extreme and that come December when Putin is strangling Europe with Gas cuts, inflationary pressures will erupt.

Labour better be looking to be on the road to achieving some price relief at the supermarkets  by December or they will be gone at the Ballot Box the following year.

I’m not looking for Socialism from Labour any longer, just basic regulated capitalism!

  1. Still happy Grant pissed 100B up against the wall in corporate welfare, vanity projects and hydraulicing property prices to keep the economy going through covid cult.

Wait till economic stagflation kicks in and prices keep rising BUT your property prices start falling. Then the real fun begins.

Following WEF economics 101 never looked so bad.

    • You’re right about the money printing during the lockdown, but the higher price of energy is the other main factor.

The oil price took off the moment Biden got into office with the intention of breaking the oil & gas industry. The consequences included inflation (obviously), gifting the OPEC with billions of dollars a day in windfall profits and lastly convincing Putin that the West would capitulate if he went into Ukraine. He gained literally a billion dollars a day in oil revenues thanks to the Biden’s climate zealotry.

If you think food inflation is bad now, wait until the climate zealots start shutting down farms…

  2. A legal requirement of Fonterra’s virtual monopoly in milk supply is that it make available to small competitors a percentage of raw milk at the same cost as milk delivered to any Fonterra processing plant
Similar access to the supermarket duopoly’s distribution centers should be enforced.

  3. the solutions are ideologically unacceptable to jacinda
….just like the UK tories their self imposed political straightjacket precludes any action.

  4. That minister as health minister went mountain biking after telling everyone to lock down. So I don’t think you can expect and bold policy decisions from him.

Remove gst from certain healthy foods would be a start.

  5. eventually will need public owned food distribution industry so all growers can sell at a reasonable price and all retailers can buy from one distribution system rather than having their own exclusive suppliers. but how to get there?

    • In the UK for many years Labour Nationalised keys industries and Conservatives sold them back. The loser was always the tax payer and those working in the industry . Buracrats do not make good bosses ask the teachers and nurses.

  6. Ocram’s razor.
She/LINO have NO INTENT on fixing the problem.
Like housing it is easily fixed, if one wanted to.
So when they talk and fiddle, they are seeing what and for how long they can away with ‘not fixing matters’, before a change of Govt, who will then try the same thing.
There is no real DEMOCRACY here in Slavelandia, and probably not any where in the world.
    Wake the heck up sheeple.

  7. As soon as they open the borders, Labeen were toast as NZ is so easy for foreign powers to influence with our pathetic lazy immigration and ease of foreign nationals voting here. You can sell an MP seat for $100k for peats sake!

    Same happening in Canada.

I think what’s pathetic is our response to our politicians for not doing the fucking jobs we pay them to do. We vote them in, then they go off and do what they like. Fuck that!
The natzo’s, labour, the freakshow that’s act, the HSBC Bank AKA The Green Party, the Brown Persons White Party AKA The Maori Party and the stained motel mattress that’s NZ First are all the same thing and that’s like my dick. Bent and useless. So why are there not riots and rampaging? Instead we sit in a corner and squeak like little hybrid mouse-kittens.
